Dear Friends,
2,506 Donors helped to raise money for our Annual Campaign
10,396 Senior Members found a welcoming community at the Y
When drafting our letter for this report, we took a minute to look back at the last two years. It has been one of the most difficult periods in our organization’s history. We experienced shutdowns, isolation, unemployment, unrest, a nationwide hiring crisis and so much more. Now, as we continue our journey through the pandemic and begin to see the light at the end of the tunnel, we look forward to what comes next. Overall, the story of 2021 is a good one. We experienced increasing program enrollments, a rapidly growing pickleball community, strengthened connections in our group exercise and group fitness offerings, and booming camp enrollments. Our mission moments and testimonials tell similar stories of connections and impact. While we often talk about our unique community at the YMCA, the numbers and stories from 2021 bring a renewed emphasis to the importance of community and connections. This is greater emphasized after nearly two years of isolation and distancing. We envision a future in which all people have access to programming and opportunities to achieve health, gain confidence, make connections and feel secure at every stage of life and can do so with dignity. While we still have a long way to go to be the organization we were in 2019, we are empowered by these stories on our journey to build back better. We sincerely thank you for your support and hope that you will continue with us on this journey. Our community would not be the same without each of you. With Gratitude,

1 YMCA OF GREATER BRANDYWINE
$1.8 Million Awarded in direct Financial Assistance impacting 6,674 individuals and families
In 2021, as families and children faced unprecedented challenges coping with social isolation, virtual schooling, mental health concerns, economic hardships and more, providing an opportunity for a “kid to be a kid” became even more important. Nowhere was this more evident than in our summer camps where children between the ages of 3-15 spent the summer outdoors and enjoyed opportunities to make new friends and participate in a variety of activities. More than 3,200 children attended camp across eight locations. On top of the extensive program options, our association invested in new equipment and activities such as pedal carts, inflatable archery tag, remote controlled boats and gaga ball pits to make every day of summer camp feel like a new adventure for the children we serve. Families were thrilled with the experience! Daneen, a parent of two summer campers at Camp Leo said, “This is my kids’ second and fourth year at YMCA Camp Leo and they say it is the best camp ever. Every day, they tell me about their wonderful counselors and fun activities. They genuinely like getting up and going to camp every day. They’ve made great friends and I also appreciate how safe the YMCA is.” At the heart of our camp programming is our commitment to making it accessible and affordable to all families in Chester County. Across the association in 2021, one out of every ten children received financial assistance from the YMCA to make it possible for them to attend camp. Financial assistance is possible thanks to the support of our generous donors and community partners. Andrea, the mother of Jaden, a camper with diverse abilities at the Kennett Area YMCA summed up the camp experience well, “YMCA camp staff are like an extended family now. I am beyond confident that Jaden is well taken care of, looked after and having fun every day at the Y.” In 2022, we are continuing to build out summer camp opportunities that keep our campers engaged, excited and always looking to come back to the Y. We are grateful to the ongoing support from our donors that makes it possible for us to provide children with experiences they’ll never forget.
The YMCA aims to improve health by providing programs that improve well-being. When people feel their best and have fulfilling lifestyles, their communities become stronger too.

A PLACE FOR CHILDREN TO GROW
While frequent handwashing and staying home when you’re not feeling well is important, as we moved into the second year of the pandemic, we saw a change in how we view health. While not new, whole person health found a renewed following in 2021. Whole person health considers an individual’s mental, emotional, financial and social health as factors that contribute to being able to live a healthy and fulfilled life. Throughout the pandemic our community, like the rest of the world, grappled with social isolation, asynchronous school and work, economic uncertainty and high occurrences of symptoms of anxiety, depression and stress as we faced uncertain times. It was not surprising that programs that focused on bringing people together and creating community, such as group exercise classes, pickleball, summer camp and youth sports saw spikes in enrollment as people sought out opportunities to connect with others. “The connection we see within our community is really a highlight of my job,” shares Jackie Canan, Senior Association Director of Group Exercise and Virtual Delivery. “I love seeing the motivation and support our instructors give to our members, but also the support that our members offer to one another. Together we are all so much stronger.” In 2021, the YMCA of Greater Brandywine ran nearly 21,000 in-person group exercise classes, introduced hundreds of people to pickleball, welcomed thousands of children to summer camps and youth programs such as swim team, theater and youth sports leagues. While these programs are all different, they share a common thread - they provided the chance for people to connect with one another. The physical facilities at the YMCA provide plenty of opportunities for individuals to pursue an active lifestyle, but it’s the connections to one another that continued to make the greatest impact. Ellen Nocks, a 79-year-old pickleball player at Kennett summarized it best when she shared what she liked most about playing at the YMCA. She said, “Everybody is supportive and it’s just great exercise with a great community of people. I’m so thankful to have found it.”

YMCA SERVICE TO YOUTH AWARD
Since 2001, Pancoast & Clifford has embraced the Y’s cause of building a healthy community in Chester County, as evidenced by their targeted support of so many programs including: The 7th Grade Initiative, Believe & Achieve, and STRIDE for ALL (formerly Girls on the Run and STRIDE); and their support of capital campaigns at the Upper Main Line and West Chester Y’s as well as the recent support for the creation of the Donna Watters Gymnastics Training Center. On top of being generous with their resources, Frank Pancoast and Chris Clifford, the principals at Pancoast & Clifford, are also generous with their time. Frank currently serves on the YMCA of Greater Brandywine Property Committee where he says he “advises and offers suggestions to aid the Y’s facility improvements and repairs.” Frank says that Pancoast & Clifford is eager to support the Y’s mission because they see, “the impact that private sector donations has on the YMCA’s ability to do good throughout the community.” Community partners are a tremendous support to the YMCA in fulfilling its mission. They donate financially and lend their expertise, expanding the impact and influence on the organization. “When a community partner gives their time and resources, it says a lot not only about them, but about the Y because they are choosing to make an impact with us,” says Camille Faust, Chief Development Officer at the YMCA of Greater Brandywine. “We are incredibly grateful for the ongoing support we receive from Pancoast & Clifford.”

The Foundation for Learning in Tredyffrin/Easttown (FLITE), a non-profit and volunteer-run educational foundation that serves preschool through high-school students in Tredyffrin and Easttown townships.
Since FLITE was formed in 2006, they have aided students facing financial or environmental barriers nearly 7,000 times through the funding of programs such as preschool tuition assistance, after school homework help, musical instrument rentals, summer learning opportunities and the purchasing of school supplies. Thanks to the support of donors and grant funding, FLITE provides academic support and services to about 300 students each year. During the pandemic, FLITE and the YMCA of Greater Brandywine partnered to offer the COVID Academic Support Program. Through this partnership, children were able to come to the Upper Main Line YMCA each day and attend Learning Centers where they received support and supervision with virtual schooling while their parents were able to go to work. “The impact of this partnership was immense. Before this program, we had a family where the parents had to take their child to work with them. They would leave their child in a storage room that had WIFI and the child would learn alone in the room while their parents worked,” says Cory Townend, a Board of Trustees representative from FLITE. “The parents would go check on them occasionally, which was hard for the child and the parents. Because of this program, we were able to get that child support while learning and take that burden off of the family.” “The pandemic was a difficult and trying time financially for a lot of the families we serve in our community”, says Brian Raicich, Executive Director of the Upper Main Line YMCA. “Partnering with FLITE provided additional financial assistance which, combined with what the YMCA provided, expanded our resources and allowed us to serve a greater number of families in need. In some cases, 100% of Learning Center tuition was covered through a combination of FLITE and YMCA financial assistance.” “We’re really grateful for the partnership with FLITE and will continue to find ways to work together to serve the children in our community,” says Raicich.
YMCA COMMUNITY PARTNER AWARD
The Service to Youth Award recognizes individuals and organizations whose dedication and effort have made a significant and positive difference in the lives of children in our community.
The program, which serves adults ages 18 and older, provides social and recreational activities for individuals with diverse abilities. On any given Friday night, participants gather to enjoy a wide range of activities such as attending area sports games, enjoying shows or performances, engaging in cooking classes and more. “I’ve been coming to Open Doors […] because I like the people here and it makes me feel like I belong with others, just like me,” shared program participant, Rebecca Bricklin. The impact of the program goes far beyond the fun activities planned for each Friday, as the greater benefits are the friendships formed and the connections with peers. The longest tenured participant has been a part of the program for 35 years. “The Open Doors program is truly very special. Adults with special needs can feel very isolated and being able to provide this opportunity for them to meet other people and to feel seen, I think it’s life-changing,” says Erin Lacotta, Behavior Analyst for the YMCA of Greater Brandywine and coordinator of special needs programming at the Upper Main Line YMCA. Erin began working with the special needs community as a young teen, helping her parents to coach Special Olympics teams. For the past eight years, she’s run the Open Doors program at the Upper Main Line YMCA. Now, as the behavioral analyst for the YMCA of Greater Brandywine, she helps to provide leadership and support on process and inclusion for the more than 5,000 children who attend summer camp and childcare programming offered at their local YMCAs. While the Upper Main Line YMCA is host to the longest running Open Doors program, many YGBW branches have hosted variations of special needs and adaptive programming including swimming and gymnastics offerings. Plans are in place to expand the Open Doors program to the Kennett Area YMCA in 2022, adding similar programming and activities for younger children, made possible through donor support. Much of our Open Doors and adaptive programming is supported by a group of loyal and generous donors, who ensure the program remains available and affordable for all. The Y is looking to grow the endowment that currently supports the program so that we can continue to provide opportunities for program participants and their families.
Jim Horn recently completed a two-year term as the Chair of the YMCA of Greater Brandywine’s Board of Directors, where he played an integral role in steering the association through the COVID-19 pandemic. “Jim has been involved with the YMCA for over 18 years, starting on the board at our Kennett Area YMCA and then as his commitment and passion for the Y grew he joined our Association Board of Directors, eventually ascending into the role as Chair,” says Denise Day, President and CEO of the YMCA of Greater Brandywine. “Throughout the years, Jim and his wife, Betty, have hosted the Triangle Society in their home, chaired the annual campaign, volunteered at events and they give generously not only to the annual campaign, but also to numerous capital campaigns and special projects. Jim is the volunteer trifecta – generous with his time, talent and treasures.” Initially, Jim was drawn to serve on the Kennett Area YMCA board because of the Y’s mission. He liked that “The Y included people from all age groups and all walks of life.” Later, he found a passion in working to improve the lives of children throughout Chester County, particularly through the YMCA’s 7th Grade Initiative. Serving for several years as the chair of the association’s largest fundraiser, the Corporate Cup, his leadership helped to raise funds to benefit thousands of young people through free 7th Grade memberships. “Jim leads with integrity, was very involved and always followed through on his promises,” says Day. “He is a great leader and has a strong belief in the Y’s role in the community and the positive influence the Y has in the lives of youth and families. We are grateful for all Jim does and has done for the Y and we value his friendship and support.”

Founded in 2017, The Triangle Society recognizes the YMCA’s most generous donors who are committed to its bold vision and bright future. Triangle Society members are individuals who support the Annual Campaign with a multi-year pledge of $5,000 or more over a three-year period.
Karen and I feel strongly about supporting organizations that support our youth and disadvantaged populations. Particularly in these very difficult times we need to show key nonprofits that our support will be consistent now and into the future. The Triangle Society is the perfect vehicle to demonstrate our commitment. - Bob Rigg, Triangle Society Member
