We recently caught up with Jackson Withrow, the 2005, 2008 and 2010 singles Rally in the Valley Champion. Jackson went on to be an All-American at Texas A&M reaching a NCAA ranking of number one. He is currently considered one of the best doubles players in the world. Where do you live now? I’m living in Austin, Texas Where did you live when you won the Sweet 16? Born and raised in Omaha, Nebraska What is your favorite thing about the sport? Competing has always been my favorite part, knowing that you can find different ways to win and having to problem solve. Favorite Rally in the Valley (Sweet 16) tennis memory? I think for most of us going to the plaza (KC) in the summer for Sweet 16 was one of the best memories, such a fun time with everyone around in downtown and was always a great event. Tell us about your experiences with the Rally in the Valley (Sweet 16) and what made it stand out from other tournaments? There was just the prestige of all the best players coming to play that event. You felt like all of the other tournaments were build up events for the Sweet 16 and you wanted to play your best. Did you go on to play college tennis? I played and graduated from Texas A&M What were some of your stand-out accomplishments in tennis? Playing doubles on the ATP tour now, being top 20 in the world, 5 ATP tour titles, 3 grand slam quarterfinals. What are you doing now? Still playing professionally on tour. Are you married? Engaged to Alexa Sweeney, getting married this November. Last, do you have any advice for the junior players today? Focus more on intent and purpose than looking at results and outcomes. I always found that if I focus on what I could control and try to execute to the best of what I had that day then the results spoke for themselves.
rally in the valley
Rally in the Valley Tennis Tournament is back (formerly known as the Sweet 16) and it's bigger and better than ever before. On June 13-16, 2024, the courts at Edmond Center Court will be buzzing with excitement as players from all over the Section gather to showcase their skills.

WHERE ARE THEY NOW?
Gracie is one of the top players ever to come out of Oklahoma. Gracie was the 2016 Rally in the Valley (Sweet 16) singles champion and 2017 doubles champion.
Where do you live now? I live in Norman Oklahoma for the summer What is your favorite thing about tennis? My favorite thing about the sport are the lessons I’ve learned, the habits I’ve built, the discipline I’ve learned to show myself, and the character I’ve built over the years. Favorite Rally in the Valley (Sweet 16) memory? My favorite tennis memory from sweet 16 was the overall environment and enjoyment of the tournament. Everyone was always around the site and cheering each other on and hanging out between matches. We all were competitive but all loved that tournament. It was the tournament of the year to be apart of . Tell us about your experiences with the Rally in the Valley (Sweet 16) and what made it stand out from other tournaments? The sweet 16 tournament stood out from other tournaments because of the environment and higher level of the tournament. All of the best players from Missouri valley would come to that tournament to compete. Most of us also happened to be friends. It was always the most fun tournament to play. Did you go on to play college tennis? I played my freshman year at the university of Georgia and I am planning on transferring to a different D1 school closer to home What were some of your stand-out accomplishments in tennis? I have 3 balls that I’ve won from national tournaments, 1 gold and 2 bronze balls. I have won two J3 ITFs in singles, i won many national level tournaments, at 13 I lost in the finals of the 18s sweet 16, I have won 7 doubles ITF tournaments, my ITF ranking was 80 in the world, and I was top ranked in nationals and Missouri valley. What are you doing now? I am currently in the (transfer) portal, looking to find a better fit for school. I am training for the summer. I am getting to spend time with my family and friends. I am working towards my academic goals. I am plugged in to my church and I work everyday to be a better follower of Christ. Last, do you have any advice for the junior players today? The best advice I could give is to listen to your body, know your limits, trust your coaches and their knowledge that they can get you where you want to be, rely on your family, have a strong but small circle around you that will push you and love you no matter what. Surround yourself with likeminded people and don’t be afraid to stand up for yourself. Whatever you do, give it your all, always.

Once your child enters the court, NO COACHING ALLOWED! You can cheer and that's it!
Please do NOT cheer DURING the point. Wait until after the point is over to cheer for a positive play, "Good shot" or "great backhand," this way the player can focus the duration of the point. Please do not cheer when the opponent makes and error. JTT is supposed to be fun so we highly encourage "positive" cheering.

UNDERSTANDINGS THE DO'S & DON'TS
If you feel that your child is being cheated, you cannot do the following: -Approach or speak to the opponent during or after the match -Speak to your child during the match about them being cheated -Speak to the JTT Coach While you might feel that your child is being cheated, he or she may not. If your child thinks they are being cheated, they need to be coached prior to a match on how to handle the situation and that would be to leave their racket on the court and go to the JTT coach.
CHEERING
SCORING DISPUTE
Make sure your child has a full water container prior to checking in
If there is a scoring dispute between your child and his/her opponent, you are not allowed to interject. WOMEN MAKING A DIFFERENCE
Caitlyn Sagraves, USPTA Director of Outreach edmond center Court
Women’s History Month unfolded in March, it was the perfect opportunity to spotlight individuals impacting Oklahoma tennis in a positive way. Among those worthy of recognition is Caitlyn Sagraves, whose dedication to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) is reshaping the landscape of the sport. Sagraves serves as the vice-chair of DE&I for the USTA Missouri Valley, and chairperson for the Oklahoma District. Caitlyn and her team actively seek out programs that foster openness and inclusivity, while also providing educational resources to help grow initiatives such as the United States Professional Tennis Association’s (USPTA) Adaptive Task Force. In collaboration with the national organization, she is developing curriculum tailored to adaptive athletes playing with cognitive impairments or physical challenges. Caitlyn is also Director of the National Junior Tennis and Learning’s Play It Forward Tennis Foundation and works closely with Special Olympics Oklahoma to help train coaches and run competitions. At Edmond Center Court, Caitlyn's dedication to outreach is evident, whether she's running junior programs, coaching USTA ladies' teams, or leading developmental programs, Caitlyn's passion for the sport shines through. However, amidst her busy schedule, Caitlyn's favorite part of her job remains being on the court, where she finds joy in helping others discover their love for tennis. As we celebrate Women's History Month, here is a Q & A with Caitlyn Sagraves: What is your favorite part of your job? Just being on court (probably why I’m doing so much). I love helping people and seeing their excitement when they feel confident in something they just learned. How did you get involved in tennis? Actually, I grew up playing soccer. I was keeper and the goal got bigger and I stayed 5’2”. I didn’t particularly like playing other positions and I kind of knew because of my size I could not go any further in soccer than I had even if I got more skilled. So, I quit a sport I had been playing since I was 4 years old. I was too competitive to not play sports though so I think it was a combo of my high school English teacher needing players and living by Westwood in Norman. I just on whim decided to play tennis and loved it ever since. It has given me so many opportunities in life I would have otherwise never had. Such as going to college or even my job now. Why do you like tennis? I think that it’s entirely skill based. You can be short, slow, tall, thin, whatever and develop the skill to be good at it. There’s no ceiling to playing it based on physical limitations, everyone has their own sets of strengths and weaknesses and have to figure out how to win with what you have. I just think that’s incredible and unique to the sport. How long have you been playing tennis? Since about 16 years old. So like 16 years now? Where did you go to college? Baker University Did you play tennis in college? So, I both played and coached college tennis. I coached at Baker the year after I graduated and worked in KU’s strength and conditioning department. Any advice for players going to play tennis in college? Really get involved and get in the midst of the team. That makes college tennis more enjoyable. Don’t get caught up in your spot on the line up, know wherever you’re at is where your coach thinks you will best benefit the team’s chances of winning and winning as a team is way more fun than winning as an individual. College sports are a lot and stressful and you have to manage your time well but they’re also one of the best times of your life. So, enjoy every moment as much as you can. Favorite tennis memory? There’s too many as both a player and a coach. I guess if I had to pick for both it’s the travel and stuff that goes on in between matches at tournaments where a lot of my favorite tennis memories are. I think that stuff stands out more than the results.

Where are you from? I was born in Oklahoma City. Although I have lived in various countries around the world, I have ended up back where I was born! Where do you live? I live in Edmond. But mostly I live in hotels for officiating. How long have you been officiating? I officially began working on the pro-officiating circuit in 2012. What is your favorite part about your job? I love the travel, seeing different cities, working with my fellow officiating family. I love watching players move up through the professional levels and being able to say, I remember when….. It’s a challenge, times are changing for officials. Some of the favorite things about officiating are disappearing. What are some of your favorite tournaments you have officiated? It’s hard to top the US Open. Saying that, Indian Wells is definitely at the top of my favorites, some that stick out in my memory are the WTA finals in FT. Worth, The Mubadala tournament that used to be in San Jose, Cincinnati and all the Florida tournaments near beaches!! What type of officiating did you do at the US Open? I have had multiple roles over the years at the Open. I began as a line umpire. Now that we have electronic line calling I have worked as a match assistant. We still fulfill the duties of the service line umpire, just do not have to call the line. We do the ball changes, check the nets, escort the players to the bathroom, replace lost balls, really an assistant to the chair. This past Open I also worked as a Field Staff official where you roam about the grounds checking on courts, assisting if needed on bathroom breaks or really anything that is needed out in the field. Who was your favorite player to watch play at the US Open? Well, we don’t really have favorites, but all the top players are fun to watch. One of my favorite matches I ever watched at the Open was Gail Monfis vs. John Isner. It was 5 sets of outstanding tennis and entertainment. Do you think you'll officiate this year at the US Open? I hope so! Applications are in so now we wait and see! Why do you think officials are so important? We bring the humanity to the court. Ensure fair play and keep play moving. With the replacement of officials with electric line calling we have really lost a lot of the humanity on the court and the interaction of the crowd with the match seems to be less without the review system. Do you play tennis? Yes, but not as much as I used to. How has the game changed since you started? Rules change every year, so they are always evolving. The electric line calling has had a major impact on officiating. Favorite tennis memory? Escorting Venus Williams to a bathroom break on one of the first tournaments after Covid. She was playing Serena. So being a lines person on that match where they were playing each other will always be one of my best memories.
t is also fitting time to spotlight two remarkable women who have not only broken barriers but also excelled in traditionally male-dominated fields. In the world of tennis officiating, two exceptional individuals from Oklahoma, Sheila Conway and Cindy Ritchie, have made significant strides, showcasing their expertise, professionalism, and passion for the sport on the grand stage of the US Open.
Where are you from? I grew up in Fort Worth, TX Where do you live? I live in Oklahoma City How long have you been officiating? I have been officiating for 11 years. What is your favorite part about your job? Making friends of other officials from all over the US and beyond. What are some of your favorite tournaments you have officiated? I enjoy working at The US Open. I also enjoy the smaller challenger tournaments, like Tallahassee and Bonita Springs, the people helping out with those tournaments are always so nice and friendly. What type of officiating did you do at the US Open? I was an Umpire Assistant at The Open. We help the chair umpire with escorting players off the court, ball changes, replacing lost balls, and anything else the chair umpire might need help with to make the match go as smoothly as possible. Who was your favorite player to watch play at the US Open? I like to watch Ben Shelton play. He is always so full of energy. Do you think you'll officiate this year at the US Open? I sure hope so! Why do you think officials are so important? Officials are important because they keep the game fair. They also make sure everything runs smoothly and on time. Do you play tennis? I used to. I work so much now I have difficulty finding time to play and my shoulder is very thankful for that. How has the game changed since you started? With all the new technology with racquets, balls and strings, the ball is hit so much harder than it use to be. Favorite tennis memory? Being a spectator at Wimbledon and getting to watch Venus Williams and Roger Federer play on center court. What do you like to do besides tennis? I love to travel, read books and learn Japanese. Favorite athlete? I have a few, but two of them are Roger Federer and Peyton Manning.
If you are interested in becoming an official please reach out to Dean Richardville at dean@richardville.org for more information.
There are many aspects to officiating. There are local officials, college officials, professional circuit officials, roving umpires, chair umpires, review officials, match assistants. There are a lot of titles under the main title of Official.

STEP 5
Email the Adult League Coordinator with the agreed-upon plan for making up the match.
Canceling a Match BEFORE Play Begins
Canceling a Match AFTER Play Begins
Once a match is underway, the following rules apply if play must be stopped due to inclement weather: Any completed lines (e.g. Court #1 singles) stand as played. Any incomplete lines must be resumed by the SAME players in the SAME positions, SAME side of net, SAME set, game and point score. Incomplete lines must be resumed at the SAME location, unless players have mutually agreed to an alternate court. In Tulsa, Incomplete lines must be made up within TWO WEEKS. The Adult League Coordinator may extend the two-week time period if weather conditions are extreme. In OKC, the Adult League Coordinator will reschedule the match. Tulsa teams can elect to schedule a double-header to make-up any unplayed lines if the opportunity exists. When a match is rescheduled following the exchange of the line-up, the line-up stands ONLY for those lines that had already started.
Unplayed matches must be rescheduled with a new date within TWO WEEKS. The Adult League Coordinator may extend the two-week time period if weather conditions are extreme. Within two weeks of a rained-out match, both team captains must agree on the make-up date. If the team captain cannot agree on a time within 48 hours, they must contact the Adult League Coordinator, who will set a time. Either the entire team can play at the same time, or individual lines can be scheduled at varying times. Teams can elect to schedule a double-header to make-up the match if the opportunity exists.

Inclement Weather Procedures Inclement Weather Conditions
Since courts can quickly become unsafe in certain situations, do not allow play to continue under the following weather conditions: Heavy rainfall Sustained drizzle Sleet and/or snow When lightning is present If the weather is questionable prior to the start of the match, do not assume that the match is cancelled. Teams must show up ready to play unless both captains have spoken and confirmed with the facility that the match is cancelled. When both teams are assembled to play, but the weather or courts are questionable, teams are required to wait 30 minutes past the originally scheduled time, unless both teams agree to wait longer.

COLD WEATHER
If there is a disagreement regarding the temperature conditions, the following website should be referenced to decide www.mesonet.org
(RAIN/HEAT/SNOW/ICE/TEMP. BELOW 40°) This rule covers only a limited number of possible hazardous/non-playing conditions. Therefore, when it comes to safety of the players, common sense shall prevail. A. In case of rain/snow/ice, the home captain is responsible for contacting the playing site, no more than one hour before match time to determine court playability. B. If a team match is in progress when inclement weather occurs, teams must wait one half-hour before agreeing to reschedule. (EXCEPTION: If the facility staff or both captains agree the courts will not be playable in one half-hour.) C. If the temperature including wind-factor at match time is below 40°F, both captains must agree to play the match; however, no match should be cancelled more than 3 hours in advance of the scheduled match time. D. If the heat index at match time is 105°F or higher, the match must be rescheduled, unless both captains agree to play. In order for this rule to take effect, team captains must communicate with each other, at least one hour before the start of the match and make their intentions known. If possible, delay the start time. E. If you are scheduled to play at a facility, and there is a TORNADO WARNING for that particular COUNTY, the USTA matches scheduled will automatically be cancelled. Captains should still call the facility to make sure the matches are cancelled. F. The Local League Coordinator has the authority to call matches off for eminent hazardous weather up to 3 hours before a match. Not showing up for a match without notifying the other captain, is a team default. A team that defaults an entire match will be dropped from the round robin. If there is a disagreement regarding the temperature conditions, the following website should be referenced to decide: www.mesonet.org/index.php/weather/local/tuln When rescheduling a match, if at all possible, try to move the match to a later time on the same day. When a match is cancelled, the home team is responsible for notifying the tennis facility that the match has been cancelled and for scheduling the make-up match with the league Coordinator. MAKE-UP MATCHES: A. Rescheduling matches for any reason other than inclement weather must be approved and rescheduled by the local league coordinator, 3 days in advance of scheduled match. PLEASE TRY TO PLAY WHEN SCHEDULED. B. You have 2 weeks to reschedule make-up matches.
