USTA OKLAHOMA IS PROUD TO ANNOUNCE THE 2024...
MELISSA McCORKLE
LETTER
FROM CEO LEW SHERR
I am asking every parent, volunteer, coach, and facility member to play their part. USTA offers free and easy methods designed to facilitate a culture of athlete safety and respectful playing environment:
T
here is nothing more important than promoting safe, respectful, and fun environments in which all athletes can thrive. With more people playing tennis than ever before, it’s imperative that we work together to ensure that the sport is being played—and enjoyed—free of misconduct and abuse. This is exactly why the USTA launched Safe Play, the comprehensive athlete safety program consisting of education, screening, reporting tools and policies. Each of us plays a role in the success of Safe Play, and I am asking every parent, volunteer, coach, and facility member to play their part. USTA offers free and easy methods designed to facilitate a culture of athlete safety and respectful playing environment: PARENTS: Know who's coaching your child – Keep the three “R”s in mind. Review the Safe Play Disciplinary List to help us monitor our sport and keep known bad actors out. Request to work only with coaches who are Safe Play Approved. A Safe Play Approved coach is educated to recognize and prevent misconduct, has been criminally background screened, and understands how to report suspected abuse. If your coach is not Safe Play Approved, request they complete the process today. Refresh your own knowledge by taking the free 30-minute parent training course to learn more about how to help keep tennis free of abuse and bullying, and learn the channels to report suspicious activity. COACHES: Join the Movement. A commendable 25,000 members of our tennis community have made the commitment to keep our sport safe and healthy for all of our players and became Safe Play Approved. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to distinguish yourself as Safe Play Approved and gain an edge over the competition. Click here to get started today so that when parents ask if you are Safe Play Approved, you can confidently say, “YES!” FACILITIES / CLUBS: Build Customer Confidence. Make sure your facility is upholding its commitment to creating a safe environment for your members. Make Safe Play Approval a requirement for your employees and give your customers the confidence to entrust their own and their child’s tennis experience with you. Play Your Part with Safe Play: Together Everyone Makes Tennis Safe.
My favorite thing about tennis is the learning and teachings you get from the sport. The kids I have gotten to coach, have taught me just as much as I have them. Playing and teaching tennis for so long has shown me that you never stop learning, which makes the game that more enjoyable.

ept. 15 – Oct. 15 is National Hispanic Heritage month and USTA Oklahoma highlighted Antonio Lares, a first-generation Mexican-American, has a passion for tennis that began unexpectedly during his high school years in Oklahoma City. Raised by his grandparents, with Spanish as his first language, Antonio's journey is rooted in his heritage. His family is from Rio Grande, Zacatecas, and the values instilled in him by his grandparents have guided his path in life. Now residing in Harrah, Oklahoma, Antonio's introduction to tennis came through a high school requirement to earn an athletic credit. This choice sparked a love for the sport that has endured for over a decade. While he started as a player, his passion has evolved into a fulfilling career in coaching. Antonio currently balances his time between teaching pickleball at Chicken n Pickle and serving with AmeriCorps at First Serve OKC, a local tennis nonprofit. At First Serve OKC, Antonio works with a diverse range of students, many of whom share his Hispanic heritage. He plays a big role in the organization's programs, particularly in the Oklahoma City public schools, where he helps create after-school tennis opportunities for young students. “My favorite thing about tennis is the learning and teachings you get from the sport. The kids I have gotten to coach, have taught me just as much as I have them. Playing and teaching tennis for so long has shown me that you never stop learning, which makes the game that more enjoyable.” Antonio's ability to connect with families and students through his bilingual skills has been instrumental in bridging cultural gaps and fostering a love for tennis among the Hispanic community. Antonio's passion for coaching has earned him a new role as the tennis coach at Classen SAS High School for the 2025 season. For Antonio, tennis is more than just a game; it's a lifelong learning experience. He believes that the sport teaches valuable lessons, and he is grateful for the opportunity to pass on his knowledge to the next generation of players.

Q & A
Did you get to go to the US Open? Our team was able to view this match from a suite at the Arthur Ashe stadium due to the generosity of Mr. Sri Ambati, the founder of H20.ai, who we had the opportunity to hear speak at his headquarters earlier in the week as a part of the Haber Cup Career Week. Chris Eubanks came to our suite to visit. We also met the Bryan Brothers. That day we also got to go into the hall from where the players go out onto the courts. I was both shocked and excited when Daniil Medvedev passed right by us. Viewing the match from the suite box was obviously an other-worldly experience stacked on top of the already unbelievable fact that I was even at the US Open. The second match we watched the women's semi-final between Aryna Sabalenka and our American Emma Navarro. I could not believe how much faster the game was and how much harder the players hit in person. What did you think about the Career week? The Haber Career Week was fascinating. I enjoyed the treat of sailing around the harbor to see the iconic sites of the Manhattan skyline and the Statue of Liberty and dinner that evening on the boat. We visited and toured Goldman Sachs, Meta and H2O.ai headquarters, as well as Wall Street, where we were present at the ringing of the opening bell. I never imagined I would have the opportunity to explore so many different careers, nor hear from the leaders of the businesses we toured. Another part of Haber Career Week I loved was our time at Henry Street Settlement, whose mission is to provide and open doors of opportunity for Lower East Side Manhattan residents through social services, the arts, education and health care. My teammates and I worked together to pull weeds, put grass seeds down and lay mulch in the community garden. I learned so much and now have more ideas to explore for my future and innovative ways to help and reach out to others. Favorite thing about the event? I honestly do not know if I could pick a favorite part of this experience. It was one of my dreams to one day go to the US Open, but I could not have known it coming true would be wrapped up in so much extra. Getting to attend with one of my best friends, Taytum Jones, and Coach Caitlyn (THANK YOU!), who guided us through Times Square where we stayed and made sure we had the best experience possible, made this time extra sweet. I want to thank the USTA Foundation for the opportunity of a lifetime and the Play It Forward Foundation and Coach Caitlyn for nominating me for this honor.

Did you get to go to the US Open? Yes! It was amazing. The facility… Arthur Ashe Stadium was a mind blow. I could not even comprehend what was happening! Me?! At the U.S. Open! Serena Williams was in the suite next to us! And the suites! They were so cool!!! I saw Medvedev! He has to be 7ft tall! And I met Christopher Eubanks. This man shook my hand and I almost passed out. He was so chill. Down to earth. We took pictures and everything. What did you think about the Amex cup? It was fun. We wished that it was more realistic match play rather than timed matches. I think that messed up the flow for a lot of us. But it was a fantastic experience. And the skill level was great! What did you think about the Career week? Career week was cool. It was inspiring to see face to face what hard work and dedication can build. It was definitely motivational. Favorite thing about the event? Meeting Christopher Eubanks for sure! He gave us all a lesson of how he went pro and how everything is achievable. l told him my name and to remember me. We shook hands and he said “ok Taytum, we’re gonna play one day.” I will never forget that moment for the rest of my life. The ENTIRE TRIP was a once in a lifetime experience. I know that… and I am incredibly grateful. The plane ride. Landing in NYC. The realization that I was in the Big Apple. The skyscrapers, the lights, the architecture, the beautiful parks. The U.S. Open, Arthur Ash Stadium, riding on the yacht, seeing the Statue of Liberty in person… the stock exchange, meeting Mark Zuckerberg, and actually playing on U.S. Open courts…. I’m a happy kid. A really happy kid!!!

Navigating the pathway to college tennis can be daunting for junior players, but the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) is making it easier with innovative tools and resources. One standout resource is the ITA College Connect platform available on WeAreCollegeTennis.com. The platform features the "Find a College for Your Level" tool, which allows junior players to input their gender and current World Tennis Number (WTN) rating to generate a list of colleges tailored to their skill level. This personalized approach helps players identify institutions where they have a realistic chance of competing, streamlining the college selection process. BILL ROMPF JUNIOR TENNIS FOUNDATION ANNOUNCES TENNIS SCHOLARSHIPS
The Bill Rompf Junior Tennis Foundation announced today the awarding of $12,500 in scholarships to four junior tennis players in Oklahoma for 2024 season. The scholarships are awarded annually to junior tennis players in the OKC area and in Oklahoma who are competing at the sectional and national level and need financial assistance with tournament travel and play to help in achieving their dreams. The BRJTF Board unanimously recommended continuing our scholarship support from 2023 for both Taytum Jones and Ian Wu and additionally awarding three new scholarships. The 2024 BRJTF scholarships recipients are: Taytum Jones (from OKC): Taytum was a 2023 scholarship recipient who achieved incredible success on the national level in Boy's 14's moving from a USTA ranking of over #600 to #99. He finished the year #3 in OK singles/doubles and #4 in singles in the MVTA. He was chosen as the Junior Male High Performance Player of the Year by USTA/MVTA. He is an Honors student at Edmond North HS. He is currently ranked in his first year in Boy's 16's, #10 in OK, #21 in the MVTA, and #418 nationally with a WTN of 20.17 in singles and 25.62 in doubles. Ian Wu (From OKC): Ian is a second year Boy's 16 player who was also on a BRJTF scholarship in 2023. His performance on court was exceptional in 2023 and continues into the new year. He holds a 4.0 GPA at Classen HS. Penelope Smith (from Tulsa): Penelope is a first year Girl's 14 with enormous potential, currently ranked #3 in OK, #11 in the MVTA and #271 nationally. Penelope is an honors, straight A students at Jenks Public Schools and trains at the Tucker Tennis Academy at Genesis Racquet Club in Tulsa. John Paul Huston (From OKC): J.P. is a first year Boy's 16, who is ranked #106 nationally, #5 in the MVTA, and #3 in Oklahoma in Boy's 14's in 2023. Having qualified for the 2023 Boy’s 14 Clay Courts and not being able to attend because of financial concerns, he is a perfect candidate for BRJTF scholarship help. He was awarded the USTA/MVTA Boy's 14 Sportsmanship Award in 2023, is Taytum Jones doubles partner, and an honors student at Edmond North HS. Ty Taylor (from Jenks): Ty is a first year Boy's 16 playing out of the Genesis Racquet club and the Tucker Tennis Academy. A several times sportsmanship award winner, Ty is currently ranked #18 in singles and #27 in doubles in OK; #27 in singles and #70 in doubles in the MVTA; and #724 in singles nationally. His goal is to play D-1 tennis in college and continue with his volunteer work with pee wee and beginner students at his club.

The USTA Adult League National Championships represent the final stage of competition for adult league tennis teams. These teams go through a rigorous journey to reach Nationals, competing at local, district, and sectional levels. We are USTA Oklahoma, which is in the Missouri Valley Section. Teams begin by competing in local leagues within their district. Winning teams from local leagues in Tulsa and Oklahoma City advance to the Oklahoma District Championships. Winners from each district move on to the Missouri Valley Sectional Championships, where they compete against teams from other MV districts in their NTRP level. The team that wins at Sectionals qualifies to represent the Missouri Valley Section at the USTA Adult League National Championships, where they face off against the top teams from the other 17 USTA sections across the country. NTRP Levels: Teams are divided by skill levels, such as 2.5, 3.0, 3.5, 4.0, 4.5, and 5.0. This ensures players are competing against others with similar skill sets. NOTE: (6.0, 7.0, 8.0, 9.0 is doubles only, 55+ and 65+, NTRP combined by partners). Age Divisions: There are multiple age divisions, including 18 & Over, 40 & Over, 55 & Over, and 65 & Over.
