The Bionic Project! On Friday, May 24th, the Bionic Project visited with every classroom, JK through 2nd grade. Their mission is "dismantling disability bias through education, story and sport." They started each session by talking about how you make a friend, particularly when the other person is different from yourself. They outlined that you start by introducing yourself and finding common interests, not by asking personal questions. They read the book, What happened to you? by James Catchpole. They also asked the group questions, some where lots of people had shared interests or experiences and some that few shared. The Bionic team includes three elite adaptive soccer athletes - who also demonstrated their amazing skills! The students also ran through an obstacle course so they could experience challenges. The students were fully engaged and asked great questions! Thanks to Friends of Haggerty for this valuable enrichment.

Coach's Corner It’s hard to believe it’s June already! If you are looking for ways to get outside and explore math with your child, try going to the Bob Moses MathTrail! https://www.cambridgema.gov/steam/MathTrail While you are there, try using the free Measure Everything App (https://apps.apple.com/us/app/measure-everything/id1480238670). This is a great way to help your child explore and have fun with math! Another way to keep your child’s math brain growing over the summer is to count and estimate. Here are some examples of questions you can ask. For JK - Grade 2: “How many steps do you think it will be to the corner? Let’s count our steps as we walk.” “We passed two cars - how many tires on both of them?” Hand your child some cheerios and ask them how many. Encourage your child to ask counting questions, too! For Grades 3-5: Try asking questions that you can’t answer exactly. “About how many cars pass by our house in a day?” “About how many leaves are on that tree?” There’s a fun book about these kinds of questions called, “How Many Guinea Pigs Can Fit on a Plane?” Enjoy the beautiful weather and have fun with math all around you! Mathily yours, Nili Pearlmutter, Haggerty Math Coach
Chicks are Hatching in Kindergarten! We know the school year is coming to a close when Kindergarten begins to hatch chicks. Every June each Kindergarten classroom gets a handful of eggs and creates just the right warm environment for the eggs to hatch. It's always a mystery how many will hatch and what each chick will look like! The evolution of the eggs brings the students' study of life cycles into their classrooms!

Library/Tech Corner by Kevin McGonegal (Technology Instructor) & Brianna Mency (Librarian) Unlocking STEAM Adventures with Lego Education SPIKE Essentials In our ever-evolving world, preparing students for the challenges of the future requires innovative activities and experiences... Enter Lego Education SPIKE Essential, a cross-curricular STEAM kit designed specifically for elementary education. Throughout the months of April and May, our fourth and fifth graders were lucky enough to get their hands on these wonderful sets! During our Library/Tech classes, our scholars worked collaboratively while facing specific challenges: Build a ferris wheel, and use block-based coding to make it operate, and remix it to make it safer or more fun for the Lego characters to ride. Build a teacup ride, but then revise it so that more lego characters could use the ride. The students would then code the ride on their computer and send it via bluetooth to their ride to make it operate forward, backward, faster, slower, and stop and start at specific times. They were thrilled at the results! Not only did our scholars have a wonderful time using these kits, they further developed their Computer Science and robotics skills that they will carry with them as we delve further and further into the 21st century. We would like to extend as special thank you to the City of Cambridge STEAM Initiative for loaning us these kits.
Room 105 Poetry Morning! The first grade students in Ms. Doherty's classroom celebrated their poetry unit by inviting their caregivers, and fifth grade buddies, into the garden for a reading. The student's poems were creative, descriptive and funny! Each student received praise and comments on their work. Well done first graders! Here are just a few, including an award winner: Congratulations to Nila M. who has been awarded an honorable mention in the Cambridge Public Library 25th Annual Poetry Awards for their poem, “Black.” Black by Nila Black is a bat and a cat and the feeling of a sweater.
