5th Graders Visit Nature's Classroom Our fifth grade students and staff went to Nature’s Classroom in Groton, MA on Monday, April 29 and returned Wednesday, May 1st. The students had a blast. I am going to let them report out themselves, hopefully in the next edition of the Holler! I just wanted to share a few photos and thank the entire Haggerty Community for their support of this 5th grade adventure, as well as Friends of Haggerty! Stay tuned for more details from our 5th graders about this amazing experience.
Library Corner by Brianna Mency (Librarian) May is full of celebrations, such as Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month, Jewish Heritage Month, National Mental Health Awareness Month, Cinco de Mayo, National Nurses Week, Teacher Appreciation Week, Mother's Day, and Memorial Day. The library can be your ally in this journey of discovery and celebration. To celebrate Asian American Pacific Island Month, I encourage you to read Brown is Beautiful, a book by the award-winning Supriya Kelkar and illustrated by Noor Sofi. Brown is Beautiful is a stunning picture book that encourages readers to appreciate the beauty within and around them and empowers them to do so. Please click on the photo below to hear Ms. Mency reading Brown is Beautiful.
Art Corner by Anthony Reynolds, Art Teacher Some 3rd graders recently wrapped up their entries to the Cambridge Nature Art Contest. We really pushed the concept of craftsmanship to make the best work possible. This pushed our observational drawing skills, as we depicted plants and animals that live in our city. Here are some examples: Older classes have just begun creating Egyptian Cartouches that will illustrate our names in Hieroglyphics. Here is a breakdown of the process.
Coach's Corner - Math Students continue to learn so much in their classrooms! Below are links to current units. If there are 2, it is because classes are just finishing one and starting the next. You can find information about past units here. Mathematically yours, Nili Pearlmutter, Haggerty Math Coach
4th Graders Visit the Lowell Mills! The 4th graders took an amazing field trip to Lowell Mills on May 9 which was generously funded by Friends of Haggerty. Students got to participate in the Bales to Bolt program where they learned how to weave on looms and got their actual weavings mailed back to them! They learned different weaving patterns such as the herring bone and other neat techniques. In addition, the 4th graders had an insightful tour around the boarding houses of the mill girls and museums of Lowell Mills including the industrial looms that were a cacophony of noise. Thank you so much Friends of Haggerty for your generous support!!!

2nd Graders Lessons in Maple Syrup Making! Since early Spring our second grade students have been walking to Fresh Pond to learn about Maple Trees and the process of tapping their sap to make Maple Syrup. They began the process by meeting with Ranger Tim at Kingsley Park, and learning how to tap the trees and collect the sap. They spent the next few months traveling to Fresh Pond with the Red Wagon, to collect buckets of sap. The sap then had to boil down to make the delicious sweet syrup. The syrup was enjoyed during a family pancake breakfast last Friday, May 10th. Well done second graders!
Music Corner by Mx. Irvin May’s Musician of the Month is Mexican guitar duo Rodrigo y Gabriela. Rodrigo y Gabriela both grew up in the suburbs of Mexico City, Mexico, and met at age 15. They both loved Metallica and playing guitar. In 2000, they formed the band and began touring around Ireland. Their music has been influenced by nuevo flamenco, heavy metal, and rock. They had their American TV debut on the Late Show with David Letterman in 2007 and performed for Barack Obama in the White House in 2010. Rodrigo y Gabriela released their sixth studio album In Between Thoughts…A New World one year ago in 2023. Check out our updated Spotify playlist here (https://spoti.fi/3UVsRs2), and watch a few videos of Rodrigo y Gabriela performing. Students have been astounded by their speed and athleticism.
