Character Day Fun!! Thank you to all of our students, families, and staff for an exciting and inspiring Character Day on Friday, April 12th. There were many students and teachers dressed as their favorite characters. Our day included a Character Parade, several Mystery Reader classroom visits and an all school assembly celebrating Reading and Writing. This year’s assembly included an incredible drumming performance by grades 3 & 4, Poetry, Book Buzzes, Singing, and a Crowd Favorite: The Masked Teacher. Several Teachers dressed up in inflatable character costumes to surprise the crowd, it was a blast! At Haggerty, We believe that Literacy is Liberating. We teach children to become lifelong readers, to think critically about what they read and to use the power of Writing to advocate for Social Change. We hope Character Day encouraged students and teachers to try a new book or new author.
Music Corner Grade 3-4 Music - Ms. Susie I would like to commend our Grade 3 and Grade 4 students for their hard work during our two workshops with Mr Lamine Touré from Senegal. He taught 2 different Bakks to the students and they practiced them and performed them at the All-School Assembly. The Bakk is a particular rhythm pattern that conveys a message. Mr. Touré’s family has been musicians and senders of messages between villages for generations. Even his grandmother sent messages. Before the days of cell phones it was important to communicate thanks for something done for you or an invitation to your birthday party! This was a valuable experience for our students in drumming together in unison. I appreciate the assistance of all of the Admin folks who made it possible to bring Mr. Touré and his colleague to the Haggerty School and Friends of Haggerty for funding it. The smiles on the faces of the audience said it all!
Library Corner by Ms. Mency Thanks to the Equity Collaborative grant and a grant from the Chinese American Association of Cambridge, we have expanded our library by adding more books that showcase authors, illustrators, and characters from Middle Eastern, North African, and Asian American Pacific Islander backgrounds. Our collection of books offers valuable insights into diverse cultures and acts as mirrors for our students to see themselves reflected. The book A Story About Afiya reminds how an article of clothing or item can preserve precious memories from our childhoods. This touching story beautifully depicts the essence of a young girl's formative years. In honor of National Poetry Month, take a moment to listen to the captivating reading of A Story About Afiya penned by the acclaimed Jamaican poet James Berry and beautifully illustrated by Anna Cunha by clicking on Ms. Mency's Reading Corner.
Math Corner by Nili Pearlmutter Spring is coming and math is everywhere - at the playground, bus stop, or on your walk to school! If you are outside with your child, do some math in a fun way. Here are some ideas: Talk about “How Many” questions. Some might be easy to answer, others you might have to estimate. How many trees do you see? How many steps to the corner? How many leaves do you think are on a tree? Look for shapes: Can you find squares? Circles? Rectangles? Hexagons? Shapes you don’t have a name for? How would you describe them? Measure things! You can use a ruler if you have one or a part of your body. For example, your child could figure out how many hands long a sidewalk square is. Time something: How long does it take your child to do 20 jumping jacks? How long until 10 cars pass the bus stop? Make up stories about what you see: Two cars went by. How many wheels were on them? Take turns - let your child make some questions for you to answer! Enjoy! Nili, AKA Ms. Pearlmutter
Literacy Corner by Suzanne Russell (SRussel@cpsd.us) Did you hear? Cambridge has a new ELA (Reading and Writing Curriculum). Next Fall, all students in Grades 1-5 will be learning a new district-wide curriculum. The Curriculum will continue to match all of the Massachusetts Standards at each grade level. The new curriculum is: Core Knowledge Language Arts, (CKLA). There will be information sessions, and letters to help caregivers learn about these new units. Your children will be learning a lot of new content knowledge. A large component of CKLA is a focus on learning important historical, social, and scientific knowledge at each grade level. Additionally, the program comes complete with all the Foundational Reading skills and Writing skills your child will need in grades 1-5. This is BRAND NEW, our educators will be trained in late spring and throughout the school year. Teachers may not have answers for you at this time, but, if you want to learn more about CKLA, Try these suggestions: 1. Please stay tuned for more CPS information sessions. 2. Explore more on your own: K–5 Core Knowledge Language Arts Program - K–5 Literacy Curriculum | Amplify 3. Reach out to Suzanne, srussell@cpsd.us with questions or wonderings.
Art Corner by Anthony Reynolds We are wrapping up a few projects with students currently. This month, we are highlighting two projects. First, our thoughtful silhouettes, where we traced our shadows onto large paper, and planned out illustrations for inside our silhouette heads, to show the things that are most important to us. Then we drew those illustrations with pencil, inked them with a sharpie, and used watercolor of colored pencils to finish. The next project is painted paper weavings 4th and 5th grade students have finished in the last couple of weeks. We created intricate, abstract designs on papers using acrylic paints and various scaping tools. We learned about looms, and then students chose from a template to start their own weaving, cutting one paper into strips and the other serving as the loom.
