Winter Peace Concert! On December 15th, we were treated to our annual Winter Peace Concert. JK/K through 4th grade performed, as well as the Haggerty Chorus. The 4th graders have been learning the recorder and played us two selections on them - they will show us their progress in the Spring! The Haggerty Chorus finished the show with four selections, and their hard work and practice was really on display. Thank you to our wonderful music teachers - Mx. Shelley Irvin and Ms. Susie Petrov! Thanks to Friends of Haggerty for the Caregiver Coffee and our beautiful Chorus Shirts!
5th Graders Visit City Hall & Mayor Siddiqui Our 5th graders recently took a trip to Cambridge City Hall to meet with Mayor Siddiqui and get a tour. The students got a chance to ask questions and share their views, sit in the City Council's chambers, and get a real taste of our local city government. This visit ties into the work students are doing in Social Studies about Government in the United States. The visit helped the students feel listened to about problems, like improvements needed on girls softball fields. Mayor Siddiqui shared information about work already started in order to make these improvements a reality! Thank you Mayor Siddiqui for hosting our students!
Music Corner - Haggerty Longsword Team 5th Grade Longsword Team Just as folks did in the early 20th century, the Haggerty 5th Grade Longsword Team danced together to help call the light on one of the darkest days of the year - December 19. The “swords” were originally battens used to hold out the sails in the fishermen’s sailing boats in the north east of England. Our 5th grade team did a wonderful job with the choreography, and the students and caregivers were duly impressed! Well done, Haggerty Longsword Team!
Lantern Making for the Solstice! On the evening of December 19th, families gathered together to make lanterns to increase the light on these dark days. Families decorated plastic jars with colorful tissue paper and ribbons and added a little battery-powered light. We tested out our creations in the dark playground! Thanks to Friends of Haggerty for hosting this fun community event!
Coach's Corner Winter break is here! I hope your family has time to enjoy being together. A great way to have fun and grow your math minds is to play games. Games can develop children’s number sense, logical reasoning, and ability to use visuals. Here are a few that I recommend, though there are many more. (And if you are a family that gives gifts over this season, these make good gifts, too.) A deck of cards!! (All ages - here are lots of game ideas) Tiny Polka Dots (JK-2nd grade - This is a special deck of cards that comes with many game ideas.) Clumsy Thief in the Candy Shop (1st-2nd grade) Qwerkle (1st grade and up) Connect 4 (1st grade and up) Zeus on the Loose (2nd grade and up) Mastermind (3rd grade and up) Quixx (3rd grade and up) Prime Climb (4th grade and up) Have a healthy and joyous vacation! Library Corner First and foremost, I want to give a shout out to Golding’s class for earning a second library celebration. Instead of reading in the fort, the classes decided to celebrate with flashlight reading in the dark. Also, I want to give a shout out to the following classes for earning their first library celebration: Olmos-Govea, Doherty, and Lacey-Dehart. This week, the kindergarten classes were able to meet with Margaret Marci, Youth Services Librarian at the Collins Branch of the Cambridge Public Library, located on 64 Aberdeen Avenue. Each student received their own library card with a small goody bag to welcome each student to the public library. In January, grades four and five will have the opportunity to participate in the Massachusetts Children's Book Award (MCBA). There are twenty-five nominees or books that students can choose from. If a student reads five books, then they will be able to cast their vote to help decide a winner. The school library has a copy of each MCBA book, and they will be available for students to check out. The public library also has multiple copies of the books as well. But before jumping too quickly into the new year, I also wanted to share a read aloud as an invitation to take pause and appreciation amidst this busy time of year. I hope you enjoy the read aloud of I am Human by Susan Verde. ~Ms. Mency, Library Media Specialist

Resources Food, Nutrition, & Gardening Feast of the Seven Fishes - Many members of the Catholic religion choose to avoid meat on some or all Fridays and the eves of some holidays, which means meals are often vegetarian or include fish instead. The number seven is also a symbolic number, representing the seven Sacraments. The Feast of the Seven Fishes is held on Christmas Eve and it is still debated as to whether or not shellfish count.(My family and I always voted a solid ‘yes’ on that, and I’m not quite sure we ever successfully prepared seven unique dishes on the same night.) For those who love fish and shellfish, here are 21 recipes to choose from to be prepared any time, not just this weekend, and not just in multiple of seven! First Fruits of the Harvest - The Swahili phrase of “matunda ya kwanza” means “first fruits of the harvest,” and this is where the word “Kwanzaa” is derived from. Karamu is on December 31 this year and is a traditional meal served on the sixth day of Kwanzaa. African, Caribbean, South American and Southern flavors come together in dishes such as black-eyed peas, collard greens, shrimp gumbo, jollof rice, peanut stew, and meals that bring loved ones together to enjoy one another’s company. A longer list of Kwanzaa recipes is here. Be forewarned, though, the photos will make you want to cook everything you see! Mind, Movement, & More Free Preschool for All Cambridge 4-Year-Olds!
