Fall Fun Day! On Wednesday, November 22, we celebrated Haggerty Fall Fun Day, hosted by Coach Materazzo in the gymnasium. Grades JK - 5th grade took turns with collaborative games using scooters, noodles, and a huge beach ball. Two different grades were teamed together (Grades 5th and 1st, grades 4th and K and grades 2nd and 3rd). It was a wonderful way to express our gratitude for each other. Thanks Coach Materazzo for the fun day before Thanksgiving break.
Art Corner by Anthony Reynolds When you are at the Winter Concert - please check out the "Chain of Gratitude". The entire school created a “Chain of Gratitude”. With each link, students reflected on the things they were grateful for. Students and staff all participated. In art class, the choice was given to write out/or or illustrate their idea. Students showed enthusiasm to not only reflect on the things in their life, but all the people as well, expressing gratitude for one another and working together as classes and an entire community. The chain easily stretches around the length of the gym, and in all autumn colors turned out beautiful.
Music Corner - 3rd-5th by Susie Petrov 5th Grade Longsword Team Just as these folks did in the early 20th century, Haggerty’s 5th grade Longsword Team will dance together and make the star close to the shortest day of the year. Caregivers and guests are welcome to attend our performance: December 19 at 8:15-8:30PM in the Gym. The “swords” were originally battens used to hold out the sails in the fishermen’s sailing boats in the north east of England.
Winter Peace Concert Friday, December 15 | 8:15AM We look forward to seeing you at our concert for all students JK-4 and Haggerty Chorus. Coffee for Caregivers will be in the cafeteria 7:45-8:15AM before the concert. (5th grade instrumentalists will have a concert in June as they just started their instruments.)
4th Grade visit Harvard University Science Department Our 4th grade visited the Harvard ExperiMentors Program at the Science Center at Harvard University Students participated in hands-on science experiments, like making a bouncy ball out of Borax and glue. They also were able to watch a demonstration. Harvard Scientists made lightning, fog, snow and a rainbow-colored fire tornado inside! The students were engaged and amazed.
Library Corner by Brianna Mency During the month of December, fourth and fifth grade library tech classes are working on coding projects to celebrate the Month of Code. This week students are learning about microbits and creating various codes for it. Students will be able to create a name tag, flashing heart, and emojis on a microbit. Also during December we have the Peace Concert. To help students prepare for the Peace Concert, I have pulled books about peace for students and teachers to read. Some of the books are I am Peace by Susan Verde, Peaceful Me by Sandra V. Feder, What Does Peace Feel Like? By V. Radunsky, Salam Alaikum, A Message of Peace by Harris J, and The Peace Book by Todd Parr. These are books that can be read in JK to fifth grade. Below is a read aloud of Ms. Mency reading I am Peace. Listen to the read aloud here >>
Coach's Corner: Math by Nili Pearlmutter Take a peek into our math classrooms! Kindergarten learned about numbers to 10. They drew pictures and used pattern block shapes to make number posters. Second grade learned to measure. They started by using centimeter cubes to measure string. To find out more about what students are learning at each grade level, please use these links. There are videos and letters in English and Spanish that share what students learn in each unit and how you can support them. Most grades are currently teaching Unit 3. A few are about to start Unit 4.

CitySprouts Corner Decomposition Lessons This past month, as the days get chillier, our Garden Educators (GEs) have been teaching about putting the garden to sleep for the winter and teaching about all that is happening underground. CitySprouts GEs teach all across Boston and Cambridge but featured here is Orchard Gardens, located in Lower Roxbury, where students are learning about worms, fungi, and bacteria that decompose organic material (ie. anything from the garden) underground. Here, Garden Educator Jordan asks students to guess if a flower, banana peel, and plastic bag will decompose inside a buried pumpkin. Then, students will dig the buried pumpkin up in the spring to discover if their scientific predictions were correct. This activity gets everyone involved taking a turn digging a hole. Looking ahead, lessons will be moving inside and be focused on our garden residents, worms and snails. Supporting our Boston Partners We’re so grateful to be a part of the Greater Boston community! Last month, CitySprouts staff supported our friends and partners at The Daily Table in Roxbury and Dorchester before convening at The Food Project’s Dudley Greenhouse. Staff enjoyed learning about the history and ongoing work of our partners to make the Boston food system more equitable. Thank you to Carlton Mabrey and Veronica Hemingway at The Daily Table and to Danielle Andrews at The Food Project for a memorable day and continued partnership. For everything else happening at CitySprouts, please check out our blog and follow us on Facebook/Instagram/LinkedIn to stay up to date.
