Fourth Grade Goes to the Harvard Museum of Natural History The fourth grade recently got to take an engaging field trip to the Harvard Museum of Natural History and participate in the Changing Earth program. They learned about how rocks, fossils, and landforms provide clues about the geologic history of our changing earth. Students got hands-on experience with fossils and various specimens (such as a live horseshoe crab) that gave clues to our changing landscape. Afterwards, they explored the exhibits (such as the ocean specimens and animals from around the world) at the museum. Fourth graders had a wonderful time exploring the museum and can't wait to go back!

Library Corner by Brianna Mency During the month of November, library classes are reading books about gratitude or working on projects creating gratitude posters. Some of the books we are reading are We Are Grateful: Otsaliheliga by Traci Sorell, Giving Thanks A Native American Good Morning Message by Chief Jake Swamp, and Sallie Bee Writes a Thank-You Note by Courtney Sheinmel and Susan Verde. These books remind us that there are many things to be thankful for and to express our gratitude either verbally or with our actions. Something new I have implemented in library classes are class celebrations. Class celebrations can be a fort in the library, flashlight reading, reading outside, etc. Library classes can earn a celebration like a fort in the library if they earn 10 library marbles. When the majority of the class is following directions, following the library rules, being kind to one another, and helping out other students, they earn points. 5-6 points= 1 library marble 7-8 points= 2 library marbles 9-10 points = 3 library marbles This reward is being implemented in the JK to 3rd grade classes. I would like to shout out Doherty’s class, Golding’s class, and Blank's class for earning a fort in the library! Literacy Corner, From the Literacy Team Over the past few weeks you probably received letters and reports about your child/children’s reading progress. We have a new assessment system in Grades K-2, it is called mCLASS. These assessment results were shared with you via ParentSquare and letters were sent in your child’s (children’s) backpacks. In grades 3-5, we continue to use i-Ready to assess reading progress. During conferences, classroom teachers will discuss your child’s results with you. These reports are designed to give an overall picture of your child’s reading skills. The assessments are part of each school’s literacy screening. What is Literacy Screening? At the beginning, middle, and end of each school year, teachers measure the literacy skills of all JK-8 students. This process, known as “screening,” allows teachers and caregivers to understand their students’ strengths and areas for additional support. Screeners do not impact students’ grades and do not diagnose reading disabilities. Instead, they are used to design and deliver appropriately challenging materials and academic supports for each learner. Screeners are required in grades K-3 under MA regulation 603 CMR 28.03(1)(f). These assessments are only one view of your child’s progress. Classroom teachers will share additional information about your child as a developing reader and writer. For questions about the early literacy universal screening & your child’s testing results, contact your child's teacher or you can reach out to members of the Literacy Team at the Haggerty. Our Literacy Team members: Patricia West, Grades K-2, pwest@cpsd.us Reading Interventionist, Karen Tlili, Grades K-4, Ktlili@cspd.us, Reading Interventionist Suzanne Russell,srussell@cpsd.us, Literacy Coach, Grades K-5

CitySprouts Corner Hello, we are CitySprouts - we teach science to your child weekly in the school’s outdoor garden. We wanted to tell you a little bit more about what we’ve been up to and what we are looking forward to this school year. Say hello to our Garden Educators With the start of the school year, our garden educators are already hard at work teaching in their gardens with students. Fall brings so much joy to exploring the wonders of our outdoor classrooms- students experience a full harvest, planting seeds to grow inside or in a hoop house, observe what's changing with the cooler temperatures, and predict what will happen in the garden during the winter months. CitySprouts garden educators bring dedication, talent, and passion to every school day and would love to share our gardens with you! Stop by and say hi, or contact us if you'd be interested in a tour. Our newest blog post opens up a window into a day at the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. School in Cambridge and how second grade students experience the beauty and adventure of outdoor space. “The Magic of a High-Five” chronicles a day with Garden Educator Hazel and a special bee encounter. We encourage you to ask your child what they’ve been learning about the garden - or even what new vegetables they’ve been able to try. If you would like to sign up to receive upcoming volunteer opportunities to support CitySprouts’ mission, please do so here. For everything else happening at CitySprouts, please check out our blog and follow us on Facebook/Instagram/LinkedIn to stay up to date.
2nd Grade Visited the Harvard Museum of Natural History!
Second graders visited the Harvard Museum of Natural History (HMNH) to further their study of rotting logs and insects. The second graders have rotting logs, with insects, in their classrooms (see below) to make observations. Two observations today were "A pill bug ran into a hole in the log" and "The darkling beetles are making tunnels in the log." The students visited the HMNH "to make close observations of the museum specimens and live animals, to investigate the diverse world of insects, spiders, and their relatives and discover the special features that allow them to live in varied habitats all over the world."
Harvard Art Museums: On Sunday, November 19th from 1 - 4PM, the Harvard Art Museums will be hosting a Family Day! Family Day is designed to be a drop-in event – families could stay for 15 minutes or for the full three hours and still have a creative, hands-on activity available to them. There will be art-making activities, gallery tours, and workshops happening throughout the museum to engage youth ages 4-10 (but all ages are welcome). Advance registration for this event is encouraged, but walk-in visitors are always welcome. For more information on the event, including a schedule of events, please visit the Harvard Art Museums website.
