Kindergarteners go Apple Picking! On Wednesday, October 4th our JK and Kindergarten students went apple picking at Smolak Farms in North Andover, MA. The weather was beautiful! They went on a hayride, picked apples, visited farm animals, and ate apple cider donuts. What a day! Thanks to Friends of Haggerty for this wonderful annual field trip.
Music Corner - Mx. Irvin October's Musician of the Month Aster Aweke, renowned Ethiopian singer, is hailed as unifying force in Ethiopia. Many of her songs tell about her love for her country. In the late 1970s, the political climate in Ethiopia took a turn for the worse, and Aweke left Ethiopia in hopes of performing music with more freedom. She lived in Washington D.C. performing for Ethiopian ex-pats for many years. In 1997, she returned to Addis Ababa and thousands of fans greeted her at the airport. Listen to our Spotify playlist to hear music sung by Aster Aweke.
Coach's Corner Happy Fall! Here is some more information about our new math curriculum, Illustrative Math. It has beautiful workbooks for each unit! When a unit is over, we hope you enjoy looking at the workbooks with your child and seeing the types of math they do in school. These workbooks may be different from the workbooks you are used to. There are some pages that the class just talks about so the pages have no answers written down. There also might be pages where some of the problems are finished and some aren’t. You also might see uncorrected wrong answers. Don’t worry - teachers have other ways to give feedback and keep track of student learning. Read this letter to learn more. Mathily Yours, Nili, AKA Ms. Pearlmutter Haggerty Math Coach

International Potluck Oct. 26th! October 26 | 6 to 7:30 PM | Gymnasium and Cafeteria On Thursday, October 26th we will have our International Potluck again! It's a Family Event - children must be supervised. We haven't had one since 2019, and we need your help! We'd love for folks to bring in a food dish, from any culture you wish (think about serving 6-10 people). We'd also love to have a collection of tables that represent different countries. Those tables could have anything that help students get a sense of the langauge, geography, and/or culture of that country. Want to help with a table display? I can connect you to other families that might be willing to help too! Please fill out this form if you haven't already: https://forms.gle/Ze6DQiZxCa7sCMw39 So far we have food coming from: Korea, Japan, India, China, Spain, Pakistan, Ethiopia, Armenia, Peru, the Gambia and the Dominican Republic
PE Corner - Coach Materazzo What's happening in PE? 4th Grade Riding Bikes! The 4th Grade is participating in a special cycling unit for the month of October. If your child would like to use their own helmet or bicycle, please bring it to school on PE days. Bikes should be locked on the rack in the recess yard and brought home at the end of the day. Helmets and bikes will be provided for all students. 3rd Grade Orienteering! The 3rd Grade is participating in a special orienteering unit for the month of October. Orienteering is a sport in which participants find their way to checkpoints within a playing area, often outdoors, in the shortest time possible. Ask your child about the special electronic equipment that has been made available to us.
Resources Food, Nutrition, & Gardening Sustainable Seafood during National Seafood Month - A company has created a 3D printed salmon filet that is now being sold in Austria. The company states that the benefits of seafood created in this way include lower carbon emissions and the ability to provide nutrients such as omega 3 fatty acids in a plant-based, vegan filet with a slightly longer shelf life compared to actual salmon. It’s food for thought now before a similar product is available in the U.S. Would you eat it? Why or why not? What more would we want to know before serving it at home or in restaurants? Traditional-seafood lovers: Buy locally sourced seafood whenever possible. Food that needs to be transported from far away uses more fuel and resources to get here. Buying local to Massachusetts = fresher seafood and support for our local families and economy. Try this Roasted Salmon recipe that combines the pink fish, sweet potatoes, and pears! (Pears are the Mass Farm to School Harvest of the Month!) Cambridge Cooks: Sweet Potato Risotto! Chef Anthony Haley will show us how to create a sweet potato risotto! Come by for this live demo, try a little soup, and join the Q&A after. Cambridge Public Library, Wednesday, Oct. 25, 6-7PM. Register using the Cambridge Cooks link, above. Mind, Movement, & More October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
