International Potluck is Back! On Thursday, October 26th the annual Haggerty International Potluck made its return! Our last one was 2019! It was a wonderful night full of delicious food, informative and interactive cultural tables, and fabulous entertainment by Pape D'Naiye from Senegal. Our Haggerty family's cultures are diverse, wonderful, distinct. Pape shared his music and then asked our children to share their cultures through dance, and so many did. And then all the children danced together. The complications of the world were left outside. It was a wonderful night, and I felt full. Thanks to everyone who shared their food, created a table, and/or helped set-up/clean-up! So glad this night has returned!

Coach's Corner Dear Families, Many of our classes have started teaching Unit 2 of our Illustrative Math Curriculum. You can find more information about these units with the links below.
Art Corner by Mr. Reynolds In art we recently studied the use of cultural masks around the world, with a particular focus on traditional West-African masks. Students incorporated elements of traditional masks, including inspiration from various animals. Here are a couple examples!
Music Corner (Grades 3 & 4) Ms. Petrov Dear Families of Grade 3 and 4 students, We have spent the last 6 weeks learning to be members of the team by playing various singing games. When the weather is good and we can go outside for a chase and tag game. Other games are two-person clapping, guessing who is speaking, finding the ring, acting out a role in a story song and bouncing the ball. The repetitions of the singing games give students the opportunity to find and use their in tune singing voices as part of the ensemble. In Grade 3, it is important to bring the new students into our ways of reading melodies and rhythms in the songs. This is the preparation period where we instill songs in their ears, minds and bodies for later decoding. Students are practicing their skill to keep the steady beat by playing on the big drums. Grade 4 students received recorders last week! The instrument must live in their backpacks until the end of the year. Students take recorders out to play the songs and then return them to their backpacks when they are done. Feel free to decorate the cases! The beginning songs are all familiar. Imagine how excited the Kindergarten students will be when they hear big kids playing songs they know at the concert in December! We are also spending a bit of time listening to tracks of the Musician of the Month, singer Aster Aweke. Please enjoy the selections chosen by Mx Irvin here. I had fun meeting families at the back-to-school night! Please don’t hesitate to write: spetrov@cpsd.us
Music Corner (Grades JK-2) - Mx. Irvin Dear Families, JK, K and 1st grade families should have received music packets in your Parent Square for October. They’re linked here if you missed them: JK/K October music packet 1st grade October music packet 2nd graders are working on feeling and listening for a sound that lasts for two beats. When they find that sound, they tie the quarter notes together to make one long sound. Here’s an example in “Here Comes a Bluebird.” Ask your 2nd grader to sing it and make sure to show the DIVE with their hands. Please reach out if you have any questions or ideas! Mx. Irvin (sirvinkent@cpsd.us)

Haggerty Rainbow Club Dear Caregivers, Rainbow Club is GROWING! This year Rainbow Club will be offered to students in grades kindergarten through fifth grade! Please see below for important info! What is a Rainbow Club? A Rainbow Club is an elementary school version of a GSA (Gender and Sexuality Alliance). At the middle and high school level, a GSA provides a safe and supportive place for LGBTQ+ students and allies to create community. At the elementary school level, these clubs can address topics of family, identity, and respect. They can be a space for LGBTQ+ families, students and allies to connect and hold space for each other. Rainbow Clubs promote a safe, healthy school climate and an anti-bullying message. Here's a link to the books available to be read at Rainbow Club. How can my student participate? Rainbow Club advisors will be going into classrooms to tell students about this opportunity. If they are interested in attending, they just need to show up! Rainbow Club will meet monthly during lunchtime. Questions? Email Biz LaRose at elarose@cpsd.us. Thank you for your support of this important initiative!

Resources Food, Nutrition, & Gardening Apple Cider vs Apple Juice - There are lots of options (and questions) out there, especially at this time of year. Apple cider is made from whole, fresh apples that are pressed. For this reason, apple cider tends to have more antioxidants, which are compounds that help lower your risk of cancer and disease. Apple juice is simply the juice removed from the apples and has far fewer vitamins and minerals in comparison, and often will have added sugars. (We always encourage and promote Cambridge water as the healthiest go-to beverage!) Try this no-added-sugar homemade apple cider recipe if you have access to a slow cooker. The comments recommend using half of the spice called for. Let me know if you try it and what apples you used. For a quick snack, slice up some apples and turn them into apple nachos. Eating apple slices with the skin on is a much better source of fiber (~4 grams) compared to drinking cider (~1 gram), or juice (< 1 gram). Whether drinking a beverage made from apples, or eating them, don't forget to drink & swish some water afterwards to help protect our teeth! (We always encourage and promote Cambridge tap water as the best go-to, all-day-every-day beverage!) Mind, Movement, & More Community Health Equity Survey: We are encouraging our partners in the city to share and promote the Community Health Equity Survey to Cambridge residents ages 14 and over. The Massachusetts Department of Public Health will use survey results to improve health programs, make decisions about funding and resources, and support policies to improve health inequities. The deadline to take the survey is at the end of October. Here’s the link to the survey.
