Kindergarteners go Apple Picking! On Thursday, September 29th our JK and Kindergarten students went apple picking at Smolak Farms in North Andover, MA. The weather was beautiful! They went on a hayride, picked apples, visited farm animals, and ate apple cider donuts. What a day! Thanks to Friends of Haggerty for this wonderful annual field trip.
School Advisory Council Thank you to all the caregivers who were willing to be nominated for our School Advisory Council! It was a terrific group of caregivers. Thanks to all who got a chance to vote as well. This year's School Advisory Council caregiver representatives are Colette Dewan, Andrea Flammia, Leah Jackson Kean, and Aminata Cham. Our first SAC meeting will be soon! This is an open and public meeting, and all caregivers are invited. Please look for an agenda and email invitation next week. Thanks all! Lissa

Mayor Sumbal Siddiqui Reads to Kindergarten! On Monday, Oct. 11th, the Mayor of Cambridge Sumbal Siddiqui visited Haggerty to read to two of our Kindergarten classrooms! She read We are Water Protectors by Carole Lindstrom. The students loved the visit and the book!
Rainbow Club Dear Caregivers, This year, we will be piloting a Rainbow Club at the Haggerty School. Students in fourth and fifth grade will have the opportunity to come together on Fridays! What is a Rainbow Club? A Rainbow Club is an elementary school version of a GSA (Gender and Sexuality Alliance). At the middle and high school level, a GSA provides a safe and supportive place for LGBTQ+ students and allies to create community. At the elementary school level, these clubs can address topics of family, identity, and respect. They can be a space for LGBTQ+ families, students and allies to connect and hold space for each other. Rainbow Clubs promote a safe, healthy school climate and an anti-bullying message. When can my student attend? Interested Fourth and Fifth graders can join us on Friday, October 21 at 1:30PM. Thank you for your support of this important initiative! Questions? Please ask Ms. LaRose (elarose@cpsd.us) or Ms. Hallihan (mhallihan@cpsd.us)

Resources Food, Nutrition & Gardening: Cambridge Food Resources: This updated guide includes local food pantries, community meals, farmers market programs, SNAP & WIC locations, and meal delivery options so residents can get food when they need it! Versions are available in Amharic, Arabic, Bengali, Haitian Creole, Portuguese, Simplified Chinese, and Spanish as well. Movement Ideas: Fall Leaves Scavenger Hunt: Use this activity sheet from Mass Audubon and get outside with your kids to search for all the different shaped leaves. This is a fun activity for young children. You can do this in your neighborhood, at a local park, or go to a state park or mass Audubon sanctuary. Collect leaves as you go and make art with them afterward for even more fun. STEM Lessons with Mass Audubon (PreK-5): Check out these MA curriculum-aligned lessons that involve being outdoors and interacting with the natural world! These are the PreK lessons and find the K-12 lessons here (broken up by grade). You will find a climate curriculum for middle school and high school and a 4-part lesson series for K-5 students all about birds. Move learning outside and Fall in love with it! Other Wellness Resources: Change Meditation Video: Use and share the attached short video (50 sec.) for a meditation on change. We are in the midst of a seasonal change. Kids are back at school. Maybe your work environment is different or new. Use this short video and take some time today to meditate and embrace that change, rather than pushing it away. Local Healthy Living Events Coming Up: Fall Family Play Groups in the Park: For Cambridge families with children 15 months-4 years old. Join up in the parks (Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays 10:30-11:30AM) to meet families, have fun, and learn ways to support your child's development! Families must register.
