Kindergarteners learn about Urban Planning An architect, Rosemary Park, visited with all the Kindergarten students on Thursday, March 30. The presentation was aligned to the Kindergarten curriculum unit on Construction. She presented the main structures architects think about when planning shared places like city's parks, schools, libraries, roads, etc. The students were then able to plan their own urban spaces!
Coach's Corner Cambridge is adopting a new math curriculum! Did you know that starting next year our students in K-5 will start using a new math curriculum called “Illustrative Mathematics?” Our 2nd and 5th grade classrooms have been piloting it, and like it so much that even after the pilot ended they have continued to use it. Here are some examples of student work from 2nd and 5th grades. If you want to learn more about the curriculum, you can find information for families at this website: https://im.kendallhunt.com/k5/curriculum.html. Mathily yours, Nili AKA Ms. Pearlmutter, Haggerty Math Coach
Ramadan Mubarak! We want to thank two of our Haggerty Caregivers, Samar and Zahrah, who have helped to decorate, and bring activities, into our conference room to create a welcoming space for our students who are fasting for the month of Ramadan. Thank you also for volunteering during the lunch period when available. It's a great transformation!
5th Graders have studied volume and fraction multiplication.
2nd Graders are studying 3 digit numbers.
Library Corner First and second grade students are getting ready to vote for the Irma Black Award, a children’s choice award for picture books. We have been considering the story and the illustrations of each of the four books. Ask your student which one they are planning to vote for! Amanda Bock, Haggerty Librarian
Resources Food, Nutrition, & Gardening Happy Passover & Happy Easter! Follow these food safety guidelines to remain well while cooking and enjoying the traditional holiday meals for either holiday. The Cambridge Public Library is hosting a Seed Swap at the Collins Branch on Monday, April 10th, from 4:30-5:30PM. Bring seeds you don’t think you’ll use in your garden this year. You’ll brighten somebody’s day and perhaps have the opportunity to try something new! You don’t need a yard to garden. Grow herbs indoors, and use them to add flavor to foods without adding salt. (SNAP benefits can be also be used to purchase seeds to grow vegetables & herbs!) Basil is one of the easiest herbs to grow indoors or out, and one of the tastiest if you enjoy pesto on your veggies and whole grain pasta! April is Earth Month and the perfect time to check in with what you and your families and organizations can do to protect our planet! In celebration of 5 years of citywide curbside composting, and to encourage participation, Cambridge DPW staff will be distributing kitchen compost bins at The Common at Cambridge Crossing, 320 Morgan Avenue on Monday, April 10, from 4:30-6:30PM. Residents can also request kitchen compost bins at CambridgeMA.Gov/Recycle. Why compost? Not only does it reduce the amount of trash heading to landfills, the nutrients in compost are great for gardens, big and small, which are used to grow the fruits and vegetables that nurture us. Learn where to compost in Cambridge by visiting CambridgeMA.Gov/Compost. Mind, Movement, & More Drop-In Outdoor Playgroups: Cambridge families with children 15 months - 4 years old can meet other families with young children and learn songs and activities to support their child’s development (and have fun). Page 4 of the Center for Families newsletter lists parks and dates (Mondays starting 4/10 through 6/5, from 10-11:30AM). Kids in grades 3-5 can walk, run, or bike to the Cambridge Public Library, O’Neill branch at 70 Rindge Ave, on Wednesday, April 12th from 3-4PM to destress and decompress by waking up their senses! Activities include creating a stress ball, rain stick, and other sensory activities. Contact the branch for more info - 617.349.4023. Older grades 6-8 can also walk, run, or bike to O’Neill, the same library branch, on Thursday, April 13th from 3-4PM to cuddle with a trained therapy dog! MCAS are next week, which can be stressful, and this could be amazing for our dog-loving students! Seniors in Cambridge are invited to get active with Zumba Gold right from home on Monday, April 10th! Instructor Emily B. leads virtual classes through Zoom on select Mondays from 11 - 11:45AM. Classes are organized by the Cambridge Public Library. Please reach out if there are any food, nutrition, or physical activity projects/ideas you think the Cambridge in Motion team could help with and don't forget to follow our team on Twitter @CambMotion.
