Library Corner First and second-grade classes are reading the Irma Black Book Award nominees. This accolade is bestowed upon an exceptional book where the text and illustrations are intertwined seamlessly. What sets this award apart from other Youth Media Awards is that it is determined by the votes of first and second-grade students. Once all the nominated books have been read, students will cast their votes for their favorite. April is a month filled with significant social and cultural events that are worth celebrating, and the library is here to assist you in every step of the way. From National Poetry Month to Earth Month, Arab-American Heritage Month, Autism Awareness Month, April Fools' Day, Earth Day, Eid al-Fitr, and Passover, there are numerous occasions to recognize and celebrate. To honor Autism Awareness Month, I invite you to explore A Day With No Words by Tiffany Hammond. This book illustrates the lives of families who communicate non-verbally. Please click on the Reading Corner to listen.

Music Corner by Mx. Irvin Our April Musician of the Month is Freddie Mercury of Queen! Freddie Mercury was a singer, songwriter, and producer who wrote many of Queen’s most famous songs, including “Bohemian Rhapsody” and “We are the Champions,” both of which have been inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. He only lived 45 short years, but contributed so much to music in that time. Born in Zanzibar to Parsi-Indian parents (now part of Tanzania) and then raised in western India, Mercury’s family fled the Zanzibar revolution to England, where he lived much of his life. Mercury is known for his incredible vocal range, which he attributed to his four extra adult teeth! You can find the music we’re studying sung by Freddie Mercury on our Spotify playlist. Mx. Irvin will update it each month with our new musician. Check it out here: https://spoti.fi/45Ujc7M.
Music Corner by Ms. Petrov Grade 4 Grade 4 students showing off their ribbons! Each ribbon represents playing 2 songs and then performing them with some challenge…such as 2 teams performing 2 songs at once. The gold ribbons represent having performed a solo for the class. Grade 3 & 4 Grades 3-4 will participate in 2 workshops with Senegalese Master drummer, Lamine Touré the next 2 Tuesdays. They will perform with Mr. Touré at the Assembly on Friday, 12 April.
Math Corner by Ms. Pearlmutter What are students learning about in math? Here’s a quick look into some of the work that students are doing. Many of the problems involve choices for students - there might be more than one answer, more than one way to show your thinking, or more than one strategy. In 2nd Grade, students just finished a unit about geometry, time and money. This is an example of a problem where there is more than one correct answer: In 3rd Grade, students are about to finish their fraction unit. They have been learning what a fraction is, how to find simple equivalent fractions, and how to compare them. Students chose what model to use to show their thinking. In 5th Grade, students worked on multi-step story problems, using many 5th grade skills. Here are some examples of a recent problem. Notice that each student used a different strategy. One used her understanding of the connection between fractions and decimals to multiply. The other student used the standard algorithm. They both found a correct answer!
Art Corner by Anthony Reynolds The Annual Cambridge Elementary Art Show at the Multicultural Art Center opens April 9. Representing Haggerty will be artwork by Mao, Daeja , Marley, Filip, Ava, and a collaborative piece from Ms. Yeh’s fourth grade. Ava’s work represents the current 5th grade art project, painted paper weaving. Students create unique paint patterns using a variety of tools, such as forks and toothpicks. The next class, students measure, cut, and weave the papers together to create beautiful, abstract works. Third grade students are currently working on the Cambridge Nature Art Contest, finding wildlife in their city to create observational drawings with a focus on craftsmanship. Here are two works-in-progress, by Annie (squirrel) and Justin (wolf). Younger students are creating “Thoughtful Silhouettes” by having their cast shadows outlined and then filling their heads with illustrations of the things that they love. Here are past examples of what they will look like.
