Spaghetti Dinner Success! On Thursday, March 7, the Haggerty Community enjoyed a homemade Spaghetti Dinner hosted by our 5th grade families as a fundraiser for their two night trip to Nature's Classroom! 5th grade families served meatball, spaghetti, salad and brownies to a gymnasium filled with families from the Haggerty Community. The event was supported by many local businesses, including donations of food from Star Market, Pemberton and Iggy's Bread Company! All the fifth graders, and their families, pitched in to make the night a success! Nature's Classroom here they come!
Author Giselle Anatol Visits 3rd and 4th Grade! The author Giselle Anatol visited our 3rd and 4th grade students on Monday, March 11th to read and discuss her book "Small-Girl Toni and the Quest for Gold." This fictional picture book is based on the author Toni Morrison as a child on an adventure to find gold. While small-girl Toni may not actually find gold, she values all the golden objects she does find along the way. After hearing the story, students were asked to write their own adventure stories about a quest for "gold." The students loved the book and the visit. Ms. Anatol also added her signature to our mural outside the library! Thanks to Ms. Burks for painting an illustration of the book cover as well! Thank you to Friends of Haggerty for funding this amazing visit!
E.L.A. and Library Corner MCBA: Massachusetts Children’s Book Award Club In February, Ms. Mency and Mrs.Russell launched the Haggerty’s Reader’s Club for students in grades 4 & 5. We are excited to have 17, 4th graders and 14, 5th graders joining us this year during their lunch time to read and discuss literature from the Massachusetts Children’s Book Award program. In March and April, students will meet twice a month during lunch to talk about books and to consider the “best book” from a list of 25 books. In late April, our readers will have a chance to VOTE for the “best book” on the list. Students across the city and the state participate in this reading program. The program helps students to read a wide variety of books that they may not typically choose for themselves. Children have a chance to read about characters and places that are different from their own lives. These books help our students to grow their perspectives about the world and help our students to challenge stereotypes that exist in traditional literature. We’ll host a Reader’s Lunch Party to celebrate this commitment to reading! Some highlights from our club so far include: 4th grader, Athari…who has already read all 25 books! Ms. Yeh, who has completed 8 books!! 5th grader Charlotte, who has read 18 books! Way to go Haggerty readers!
Music Corner by Mx. Irvin Our March Musician of the Month is BTS! K-Pop boy band BTS (Bangtan Boys or 방탄소년단) hails from South Korea and has 7 members: Jungkook, RM, Jin, Suga, J-Hope, Jimin, and V. BTS started when its youngest member was only 13, and records songs in Korean, Japanese, and English. The band is currently not performing as six of its seven members are fulfilling mandatory military service in South Korea. But we are still enjoying BTS’ music: Dynamite and My Universe are the current favorites. Listen to our updated Spotify playlist here.

Art Corner by Anthony Reynolds American Gothic In this 4th and 5th grade project, we first studied the work of Grant Wood. We then took his classic American painting, American Gothic, and brainstormed what its most important characteristics were. Then students created their own version utilizing parody to exaggerate the characteristics with their own subjects. Here are examples by Anthony and Josephine. Underground Worlds In this 2/3rd grade project, we discussed animals that tunnel and hibernate, and then we looked at Saul Steinberg's "Continuous Miner" and discussed how the artist used repetitive lines that produced a simulated texture in the "ground" area. Students drew a normal above ground scene with their own imaginary home underground, and filled in the surrounding area with simulated textural designs. Here is a collaborative piece by Barcot, Isaac, Mohammed K., Hamza, & Chris! Collage Kindergarten through 5th recently finished up a unit on collage. We looked at innovators such as Romare Bearden and Henri Matise, as well as contemporary artists sharing their work on social media. We then worked from magazines such as National Geographic and O (Oprah), as well as a number of comic books donated by a local shop. Here is a collage by Annie.
MCAS Preparation Students in grades 3-5 are currently preparing for the Spring MCAS Reading and Math assessments. Teachers and students are learning strategies for essay writing as they prepare to write essays about their reading. Please encourage your children to stay calm and focused. These assessments can create stress, especially for our 3rd graders, who will experience their first standardized state test. If you are interested in looking at or reading more about the MCAS, you can find resources on the DESE website.
