Coach’s Corner From the Literacy Coach Celebrating Black History Month This month, our school community has been teaching, honoring and celebrating Black History. Students have been reading about Black Americans throughout our school and learning about the thousands of contributions made throughout the years and throughout our country. Some classrooms decorated their classroom doors to showcase Black History. Here are 2 images of classroom doors from Room 104 and 105. Some classrooms studied individuals while other classrooms focused on movements of social change led by Black Americans. Our fifth graders, Louis M. and Ayesha S. led Morning Announcements each day including a fact, quote or trivia question focused on teaching Black History. While we take the opportunity to highlight Black History Month in February, our community is committed to honoring and celebrating the diverse culture of our country and our city throughout the school year. If there are caregivers who would like to borrow books or if you are looking for specific books to celebrate your culture, please email Ms. Mency or Mrs. Russell anytime (bmency@cpsd.us, srussell@cpsd.us).
Library Corner by Brianna Mency Exciting news! Thirteen third-grade students have been selected to have their mini sagas published in the Young Writers: A Wander In The Woods 2023 | Creative Writing Contest book. In December, third-grade students composed mini sagas or short stories centered around wandering in the woods, each limited to one hundred words or less. In February, Marina Seevak, from The Beautiful Stuff Project came to our JK classes to demonstrate how to utilize the treasure boxes. The students enjoyed listening to the stories Little Red Fort and Lots of Dots. Following the read-aloud session, Marina presented each student with a treasure box containing recycled items associated with each story. The students had the opportunity to sort the items, build forts and towers.
CitySprouts Corner FUNgi in February What is a living thing that is not a plant or animal? Mushrooms! Students have been learning about mushrooms’ growing environments, body parts, and practicing modeling them in their classes with CitySprouts Garden Educators. At Russell Elementary School in Dorchester, a first grade class modeled different mushrooms with playdough to understand the variety of colors, shapes, and environments mushrooms can grow in. CitySprouts Hosts School Gardeners Gathering CitySprouts Program Director, Melissa Wender, and Terracorps Youth Education Coordinator, Leila Skinner, convened CitySprouts’first ever School Gardens Gathering at The Food Project's Dudley Greenhouse in Roxbury to bring together educators working in school gardens in the Greater Boston area. Educators and gardeners joined us for multiple breakout sessions including learning about native pollinator-friendly plants, teaching English Language Learners in the garden, and how to plant for accessible and educational gardens. Thank you to all our partners who helped to lead these fruitful discussions. For everything else happening at CitySprouts, please check out our blog and follow us on Facebook/Instagram/LinkedIn to stay up to date.
