100th Day of School! Did you know Friday, February 10 was the 100th day of school?! Classrooms celebrated the day in many different ways - by creating art with 100 pattern blocks, sculptures with 100 cubes, jumping for 100 seconds, making 100 equations that equal 100, and many more creative and fun activities.
Art Corner by Mr. Reynolds This week students practiced timed gesture drawing. We moved the tables into a circle and students took turns posing for increasingly shorter increments until finally we reached a 1 second gesture drawing. We focused on this as an exercise rather than a way to make a finished artwork, but they turned out awesome!

You may have visited your school’s garden recently and noticed an interesting plastic covering taking over one of the raised beds. If you had some questions immediately come to mind you would not be alone! Built by your garden educator, these contraptions are known as hoop houses. Very similar to a larger climate controlled greenhouse, hoop houses are used to extend the growing season in colder climates such as ours. Most "cold'' tolerant plants can not survive the harsh Boston winters, so by giving our crops a little bit of protection and warmth, we are able to continuously harvest until we plant our full gardens come springtime. Even though our lessons are currently indoors, this practice gives students access to fresh greenery year round. During the month of January, garden educators placed a special emphasis on our fungi lessons. Students had the opportunity to observe various types of mushrooms as they grew them together on our mycelium block grow kits. Each week, students were amazed by the rapid growth as they were tasked with creating craft replicas of the mushroom fruits under observation. Unfortunately, we do not get the opportunity to cook and enjoy these mushrooms in the classroom together so we encouraged students to share their curiosity in the kitchen with you! To always stay connected with CitySprouts’ mission please check out our blog and give us a follow on Facebook/Instagram/LinkedIn. If you would like to be added to our list to receive valuable volunteer information about upcoming opportunities, please complete this form, thank you!
Coach’s Corner - Math It’s time for February vacation! Keep your child’s math brain growing over vacation with some of these games and activities. Notice things you can count as you go about your life. “Let’s count our steps as we walk to the park.” “We passed two cars - how many tires were on both of them?” Hand your child some cheerios and ask them how many. Encourage your child to ask counting questions too! Play games! On my Haggerty Math Website you can find ideas for games you can play at home with paper and pencil, dice or cards: sites.google.com/cpsd.us/math-at-haggerty/ math-games-and-activities/games-to-play-at-home. Use one of Cambridge’s online math learning programs: ST Math (K-grade 5) or iReady (grades 3-5). Students can all sign in through Classlink: https://launchpad.classlink.com/cpsd. Mathily Yours, Ms. Pearlmutter

Black History Month - Hidden Figures Stories This month especially, but not only in February, students across our school are learning about Black Americans who have made and make important inventions, cures, innovations, and contributions to the ways we live our lives. Did you know that Garret Morgan made life safer for all Americans? In 1916, Garret Morgan invented the _______________________________. If you want to know what he invented, just ask any 3rd grader who Garret Morgan is and how he changed the ways that people fought fires. Mr. Morgan also made it safer for us all to cross the street by inventing the _______________________. If want to know how he did that, just talk to Room 212 or 213, they know a lot about the amazing Garret Morgan!
