Kindergarten Family Math Morning! Our new curriculum, Illustrative Math, has engaging centers where students practice skills they have learned. Last week, Kindergarten had a Math Morning where students demonstrated games and activities for families and teachers. In one geometry activity, children choose an image, like a chair or a castle, and try to build that shape with blocks. This develops their ability to put shapes together to make new shapes. In the Math Stories center, children have an image of a place, like a playground, beach or a farm. They make up math stories to match and draw them on. Many of the centers help students practice adding and subtracting. Everyone had fun doing math together!
Music Corner by Ms. Petrov From Ms Susie- Grade 4 recorder players have practiced 3 levels of songs using all the fingers of the top (left) hand! It’s tricky to sustain instrumental practice with once/week music classes, so I would like to encourage students to play at home. I have included the first two words of each song as a hint. Be sure to keep your recorder in your backpack when you are not playing it!
Coach's Corner (Literacy)by Suzanne Russell Back my popular demand, Mrs. Russell, our Literacy Coach and Brianna Mency, our Librarian, will launch, The Haggerty’s Readers Club (on February 5th, 2024 for grade 4 and on February 7, 2024 for grade 5). The meetings will take place during 4th and 5th grade lunch periods. During meetings we will be discussing the MCBA books. The school library has a copy of each MCBA book, and they will be available for students to check out. The public library also has multiple copies of the books as well. Students will meet for several lunches together to read and discuss the Massachusetts Children’s Books for 2023-2024. Voting takes place in April, we’ll announce this year's best book later this year.
Music Corner - by Mx. Irvin February Musician of the Month Arivu (born Arivarasu Kalainesan) is a rapper and Bollywood playback singer. Born near Chennai, India in 1991, he began his career after writing poetry in high school; his friends read it and prompted him to try rapping. He’s a social justice activist and a member of a protest band, “The Casteless Collective.” Arivu advocates against the caste system in India and many of his songs are centered around casteism. Listen to some of his music on our Musician of the Month Spotify playlist.

CitySprouts Corner “Snailed It!” Welcome to CitySprouts’ indoor lessons! As the weather becomes too cold for students to go outside for garden lessons, the CitySprouts Garden Educators bring the lessons inside for students. The month of January included lessons on snails, worms, roly polies, and even mealworms. These decomposers and critters are crucial parts of the garden ecosystem. K2 students in Orchard Gardens K-8 Pilot School in Lower Roxbury are learning all about snails’ habitats and how different parts of their bodies, including their “tentacles” help them survive. Sweet Potato Planting Workshop at the Dudley Greenhouse CitySprouts Garden Educators and Garden Operations staff joined our partners at The Food Project and Boston Community Gardens at the Dudley Greenhouse in Lower Roxbury to hear from two volunteer garden coordinators how to best start sweet potatoes. Sweet potatoes are a nutrient-rich, delicious food and show students that we eat all different parts of the plant, including the roots or tubers. Sweet potatoes grow underground and are a great project for young hands to dig for (you can always find a bunch in our CitySprouts garden beds). We are excited to start planting the seeds for a fruitful harvest this summer! In the meantime, for everything else happening at CitySprouts, please check out our blog and follow us on Facebook/Instagram/LinkedIn to stay up to date.
