Music Corner by Mx. Irvin Our January Musician of the Month is Lizzo, U.S. American singer, rapper, songwriter and flutist. Born in 1988 in Detroit, Lizzo moved with her family to Houston, Texas at age 9. She found a love for flute and band there, and went on to receive a college scholarship to play flute. She discovered that she loved to write rhymes and started an all-girls rap group, the Cornrow Clique. Lizzo dropped out of college to pursue her music career and has always pushed the message that you can and should love yourself. Students’ favorites are “2 Be Loved (Am I Ready)” and “Pink” from the Barbie movie. Listen to our Spotify playlist here. You can see her play James Madison’s crystal flute and perform on the Today show.
CitySprouts Corner Happy Carrot Harvest Day! Though the winter is a slower time in the garden, after the first frost is the best time to harvest carrots in December at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. School in Cambridge. Second graders are harvesting, tasting and making scientific drawings in their journals of freshly-grown carrots. The MLK school is one of CitySprouts’ 24 different schools across Cambridge and Boston. In January, Garden Educators will be moving inside and learning about worms and snails and their life cycles and habitats. “Goodbye, Mr. Pumpkin” Our newest blog post opens up a window into a day at Orchard Gardens Pilot School K-8 in Lower Roxbury.Visit citysprouts.org/news to read about how Garden Educator Jordan uses repurposed old Jack-O-Lanterns to teach second graders about decomposition. We encourage you to ask your child what they’ve been learning about the garden - or even what new creatures they’ve been observing. Ending the Year with Gratitude From all of the Garden Educators and staff at CitySprouts, we are so grateful for the support of all our schools, our partners, and the individual staff, educators, and administrators we work with. We thank you and wish you a happy holiday and a happy new year! For everything else happening at CitySprouts, please check out our blog and follow us on Facebook/Instagram/LinkedIn to stay up to date.
Friends of Haggerty (FOH) thanks all who donated to our Annual Winter Appeal! We raised approximately $7500 - close to our $10,000 goal. Friends of Haggerty is our non-profit 501(c)3, and they do two direct appeals a year to solicit most of their income. Friends of Haggerty uses this money to provide enrichment activities for our students - events like field trips, International Potluck entertainment, Family Folk Dancing (coming up), STEAM night (in May), and Haggerty Day (in June). When you see the Logo above in the Haggerty Holler, it means that event was paid for by Friends of Haggerty! We always welcome new caregivers to FOH! Maybe you don't have time to commit to a meeting a month? There are lots of ways to contribute to our community! Help at a community event, volunteer in the library or the book room, chaperone a field trip, help another family at school by donating winter clothing...(add your idea here). Maybe you meant to give and forgot? Here's the link Got a question? Want to join? Ask Lissa or a representative on FOH - Borjan Gagoski, Matthew Anderson, Darl Andrew Packard, Caroline Logan, Anne Hager, Kaitlin Gallo, or Andrew Daley!
Resources Food, Nutrition, & Gardening Food Meets History: On January 15, 2019, a wave 35 feet high ripped through Boston’s North End, bringing destruction, pushing buildings off their foundations, causing death for many people and animals. What made the event especially unique was that the wave was not water — it was molasses. The Purity Distilling Company had constructed a 50 foot holding tank for the molasses in a location on the harbor that was perfect for importing & exporting. The tank was known for leaking, and the company painted the tank brown to hide the problem rather than fix it. There is little data on how all of that molasses affected the ecosystem of Boston Harbor, where the molasses ended up after an atrocious clean up effort. The incident and its aftermath paved the way for much of the regulations, zoning, permitting, and accountability we take for granted today. This video demonstrates how it also has fostered important conversations about immigration, the lack of political voice for non-citizens, and looking at how we protect vulnerable populations. It's an interesting discussion to listen to. Some Food Science - A tablespoon of molasses has roughly 15 grams of sugar. Have any students who want to calculate how many grams would be in a tank 50’ high, 90’ in diameter, that could hold 2.5 million gallons of molasses? The sucrose (the chemical name for sugar) in the molasses was exposed to a rapidly warming temperature outside, and a fresh delivery of molasses was also warmed to help it flow better into the holding tank. All that warmth and sugar was a recipe for fermentation, which created gasses and pressure to build inside a tank that wasn’t stable to begin with. Not turned away yet on molasses? Try the Mayo Clinic's Boston Baked Beans recipe for the more heart healthy version, packed with folate, iron, and lower in sodium and saturated fat compared to the traditional preparation. Let us know if you make this!
