Owls in Kindergarten In December, Windows on Wildlife brought owl visitors to our JK/K students. Owls are a topic of study in Kindergarten. Our students learn as much as they can about them, and even dissect owl pellets to examine what they eat! The students really enjoyed seeing the Owls up close. If you want to take a peek at an owl in action check out this webcam: "Owl Cam activity." Music Corner by Mx. Irvin January’s Musician of the Month is Israel Kamakawiwo’ole. Kamakawiwo’ole’s parents both worked at a nightclub so he was exposed to many Hawaiian musicians. He started singing and playing the tenor ukulele with his brother “Skippy” and cousin Allen at age 11. They later formed part of his first musical venture, Makaha Sons of Ni’ihau. In 1990, Kamakawiwo’ole released his first solo album, Ka ‘Ano’i, which won several awards. Most people who recognize Kamakawiwo’ole’s beautiful voice know it from his cover of the medley Somewhere Over the Rainbow/What a Wonderful World (bit.ly/MOTMRainbowIZ). Grownups can learn more about Kamakawiwo’ole in this documentary (bit.ly/IZDocumentary). Check out our updated Spotify playlist (spoti.fi/3DFJBLg) to hear Israel Kamakawiwo’ole songs we’ve been listening to in music class.

This past month, our Garden Educators (GEs) greatly enjoyed seeing students’ excitement and wonder as they discovered and learned about the valuable functions of worms and snails. We brought garden snails and red wigglers into classrooms for students to observe hands-on and it was gratifying to witness students growing more comfortable and their curiosity building even when their first reaction was, “ew, that’s gross!” Looking ahead, our educators and students will be working together using grow kits to cultivate various types of edible mushrooms for scientific observation. As we welcome in the New Year, we at CitySprouts are undergoing quite a transformation. We are saying goodbye to our founding director of 22 years, Jane Hirschi, and we are incredibly excited to welcome Susan Diller as our new Executive Director. Solomon Montagno, another long term member of our team, is stepping down and Melissa Wender, who has been working as a GE, has assumed the Program Director position. Our metamorphosis, if you will, is reflective of your school gardens as they endure the winter but we are working hard to set ourselves up for an amazing Spring season. If you would like to sign up to receive upcoming volunteer opportunities to support CitySprouts’ mission, please do so at citysprouts.org/volunteer-sign-up. For everything else happening at CitySprouts, please check out our blog at citysprouts.org/news and follow us on Facebook/Instagram/LinkedIn to stay up to date.
