5th Graders are Moving On! On Friday, June 16th, the Haggerty 5th graders put on a moving assembly to remember and celebrate their years at the Haggerty School. Small groups of 5th graders reminisced about a grade, Kindergarten through fifth grade. The fifth graders, led by Mx. Irvin, beautifully sang "Never Gonna Give You Up." The assembly concluded with words from Nancy, reminding them Haggerty will always be home to them - and we hoped to see them back! They also put a personal memento in the time capsule, for their 18-year-old selves to come back and find. The families and fifth grade staff celebrated together after the assembly with lunch and a photo booth. As a Legacy Project, the fifth graders worked with Ms. Burks to do a beautiful mural on the back playground wall. It's amazing!! Thanks to Friends of Haggerty for helping to fund this celebration and mural! We will miss you fifth graders!
Haggerty Day Fun!! On Wednesday, June 14, the entire Haggerty Community enjoyed a block party with a variety of activities - face painting (thanks Anthony Reynolds), a Fire Truck (thank you Cambridge Fire Department), an obstacle bouncy house, drumming with Jafar (thanks Jafar), a water station (thanks Nili Pearlmutter and Margie Singer), and Field Games (thanks Tom Materazzo). It was a beautiful day and we had so many caregivers who came out to chaperone or help with a station. Thanks to Friends of Haggerty for this very fun annual event.
Dear Haggerty Families and Caregivers~ Thank you for another great year. I know you join me in thanking the Haggerty faculty for their ongoing efforts and tireless work. I have enormous gratitude for the staff at the Haggerty School. Without the collective efforts of the entire faculty and the foundation that's been built here over the years, it would be difficult to create the many experiences your children have had. The staff here have a belief system that your children can work hard and get smarter, even in the face of challenges. It's this fierce commitment that ALL students can and will get smarter. Collectively, this staff makes it happen; from the custodians to the specialists, the paraprofessionals, teachers and coaches, they show up and they do it because they believe deeply in in their work. I simply can not imagine being anywhere else than with this group of educators; sharing in their commitment and compassion is an incredible honor. Kudos to the staff for all of their work and commitment to the relationships they have created with every student and family! Gratitude is also in order for our incredible Haggerty caregivers! Having the trust of a caregiver to educate and help form a child’s beliefs and opinions of the world and community we live in - who they become and what they believe to be important - is another great honor. I know I speak for the entire faculty when I say, THANK YOU! Thank you for trusting us and for sharing your incredible children with us. Thank you for your hours and hours of volunteering, coordinating events, and the countless other things you do to support and engage with us. "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.” Margaret Mead Enjoy your children and the change of pace the summer offers you and your family. Read often! Read together, share stories, and encourage your child to explore the world around them. The more they do, with your guidance and conversation, the more their vocabulary GROWS. The stronger their vocabulary, the better readers, thinkers and writers they become! I’ll be in touch about classroom placement in mid to late August. If you need anything, you can always reach us in the office through the middle of July. Best wishes for a relaxing, safe and enjoyable summer! Warm regards, Nancy
Kindergarten Art Show! The Kindergarten students have been hard at work studying some of the great artists of the world! They worked hard to recreate their styles. Check out the beautiful works below!
Coach's Corner From the ELA Coach, Suzanne Russell & Early Literacy Interventionist, Patty West Summer Reading First, we wish you a happy, healthy and joyful summer. Your children's progress in Reading and Writing are our top priority and so, we ask you to make sure that your children read and write as often as they can this summer. Reading requires practice, you get better at reading by reading! Writing also requires practice. Ask children to write notes, letters, lists, stories and or poems. Please create a daily reading routine to help your children exercise their reading muscles. You can find many resources and websites to motivate your children to keep reading and writing this summer. The link to the Cambridge Public Schools 2023 Summer Reading List is https://cpsd.us/summer_reading. Try a sticker chart or weekly reading challenge to help keep children motivated. 4th Grade to Lowell Mills! The 4th graders took an amazing end of the year field trip to Lowell Mills which was generously funded by Friends of Haggerty. Students got to participate in one of two different programs: Bales to Bolt, where they learned how to weave on looms, or Yankees and Immigrants where they learned about artifacts immigrants would bring over with them and engaged in a mock debate. The 4th graders had an insightful tour around the boarding houses of the mill girls and museums of Lowell Mills. Thank you so much Friends of Haggerty for your generous support!!!
Friends of Haggerty Spring Appeal is underway now! It's time to plan for next year's field trips, artist visits, and more, so we're asking you to help with our spring appeal for donations. Spring Concert Joy! On Friday, June 9th the Haggerty community gathered to hear grades JK - 4, and the Haggerty chorus perform a beautiful Spring Concert! The songs were varied, some included solos and instruments. Both the Second Grade and the 3rd - 5th Grade chorus showed off their hard work this year! Thank you to Mx. Irvin (Grades JK-2nd and both Chorus groups) and Susie Petrov (Grades 3 & 4) for all their hard work with our students this year.
