Book Character Day Success! Dress Up Like a Book Character Day was a great success! Students and teachers alike wore costumes to represent some of their favorite book characters in our Parade of Characters. Students and families showed lots of creativity using ordinary clothes and the crafters among us went all out. Thanks to the families and friends who lined the parade route around the block to May Street and back up to Cushing Street. During the day, many classrooms had Mystery Readers or DEAR (Drop Everything And Read) Time. At the end of the day, we gathered as a whole community for an assembly in the gym. Ms. Healy's JK class acted out the story of The Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly. Fifth grade hosts Shifa and Shanze interviewed third grade author Zain. Finally, the Haggerty Chorus led us all in the Read Across America Day song. A big thank you to all of the families and teachers who worked so hard to make the day special!
Music Corner Musician of the Month - April Great Big Sea, Celtic rock/folk rock band from Newfoundland, Canada Great Big Sea members included Alan Doyle, Bob Hallett, Darrell Power, and Séan McCann. The band was formed in 1993 and retired in 2013, when Séan McCann left the group. Alan Doyle and Séan McCann have both continued making music in their solo careers. April’s Musician of the Month is the Canadian band, Great Big Sea. The group is best known for rock versions of sea shanties, coming from Celtic, Scottish, and Cornish tradition. All four band members sing, though Alan Doyle sings the bulk of the lead vocals. Among the members, they play guitar, bouzouki, mandolin, bodhrán, tin whistle, bass, bones, fiddle, accordion, concertina, and bagpipes. They released 10 albums in their 20 years together as a band. City Sprouts Corner! Throughout the past month, our Garden Educators have begun the highly anticipated transition, returning to their natural habitats (your schools’ garden!). While we greatly enjoyed bringing the natural world into classrooms through our winter lessons, there is no replacing the experience of hands-on learning surrounded by a vibrant garden. With spring planting underway, students will have the opportunity to make a tangible impact they can observe throughout the entire growing season! For now, most of our gardens are still quite bare. Spring flowers have blossomed and in the coming weeks, more and more of the garden will begin to come alive. Make sure you get a chance to visit and check out how the garden progresses throughout the season! We are excited to announce that applications are now live for our Young Leaders Summer Program. We offer an engaging, no cost 5-week program focused on creating future environmental stewards through project based science and engineering activities. Participants also develop garden based skills as they care and maintain the school garden, earning a $100 stipend upon completion of the program. If you would like to submit an application for a student aged 11-14, please visit our website. As always, stay up to date with upcoming opportunities for both you and your student/s by following us on Facebook/Instagram/LinkedIn. Our summer volunteer applications are now live as well, so if you or someone you know is interested in helping their school community (no gardening experience required!), submit an application here. Here’s to a successful growing season!
Haggerty Pride T-Shirts Have Arrived! Through various fundraising efforts and the support of Friends of Hagerty (FOH), we have been able to purchase Haggerty School t-shirts for the entire student body this year! We are very excited to be able to spread Haggerty pride and school spirit and we encourage students to wear their t-shirts to school, especially on special event days, such as Haggerty Day (coming on June 14th). We hope the students enjoy them! Best, Haggerty Swag Team and Friends of Haggerty
Resources Food, Nutrition, & Gardening This week, let’s look at hydration. How much water are you drinking each day? Spring is a good time to think about your intake, before the summer heat sets in. Each of us needs a different amount, of course. Water can come from food, particularly fruits and veggies. When these are part of the diet, the average adult female requires nine cups of liquid water per day and the average male requires 13 cups (eatright.org/health/essential-nutrients/water/how- much-water-do-you-need). (One cup = eight ounces). An easy way to ensure you meet your water needs: check your reusable water bottle to see how much water it holds, and note how many times you need to refill in a day. Did you know that Cambridge has water bottle fillers in most parks and squares? Add a piece of lemon, lime, cucumber, or mint leaf to water, adding flavor but without adding calories. Check out these flavored water recipes (cambridgepublichealth.org/ wp-content/uploads/2022/08/Jazz-up-your-water_07-22-22.pdf). Adults and children are bombarded with marketing for sugar-sweetened beverages (choices project.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/HPRC_FS_SugaryDrinkConsumption_Jan_2023.pdf) all the time, but our bodies do not benefit from the extra sugar. Water is the best choice, and Cambridge tap water is a safe, inexpensive option for staying hydrated! Mind, Movement, & More Anxiety and uncertainty around housing can affect mental health. On April 29th, visit the Main Library between 11AM - 2:30PM to learn about housing services in Cambridge and your rights. The flyer is available in multiple languages: አማርኛ (Amharic) عربي (Arabic) বাংলা (Bengali) English Kreyòl ayisyen (Haitian Creole) Português (Portuguese) 简体中文 (Simplified Chinese) Español (Spanish) Please reach out if there are any food, nutrition, or physical activity projects/ ideas you think the Cambridge in Motion team could help with. Don't forget to follow our team on Twitter @CambMotion.
