Georgia Tree Planting Program
Private landowners in Georgia own more than 90% of the state’s forestland. Through the years, this forest canopy has become fragmented, developed, and converted to other land uses. The result is a stressed ecosystem that covers less of its original range. A partnership with the Georgia Forestry Commission and property owners is focused on restoring the land to its natural state and ensuring the trees remain for the long term. Native loblolly, slash, and longleaf pine were planted, restoring the natural forest mix to strengthen biodiversity. The newly planted trees helped ensure healthy habitat for endangered and threatened wildlife, including the red-cockaded woodpecker, indigo snake, and gopher tortoise. In addition, this project helped landowners maintain the forestland for soil and water conservation, air quality improvement, and sustainable forestry products.
