Oh, where to begin…..Our Holiday Party was, to quote Gene Mullaly, “an outstanding surprise success!” I have to agree with that statement. Party attendance was approximately 79 guests, which was a lot more than the original RSVPs we received before the party. We had many guests from the East County Democrat Club and others. It was wonderful that they came! Many of the party participants thoroughly enjoyed the magician, Apollo Magic! Again, a surprise, as I was not sure how well a magician would be received by the audience. Entertainment is always dicey! The food, drinks, and goodies were delicious and the decorations seasonal. Richie Gibson deserves a huge THANK YOU for all of his before/after prep and take-down. He arrived hours before to ensure everything was “just right”. Also, thank you everyone who participated by bringing desserts and sides. The vegetarian chili was delicious as were the other main dishes brought by the club board. The La Mesa United Methodist Church is very grateful for all of the donations our members and friends gave. Everything will be utilized to enable others to endure the winter. Sooooo, to quote Gene Mullaly, “the party was an outstanding surprise success!” Thank you everyone for coming! HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL.

January 3 Meeting and Board Elections by Rosamond Trujillo-Blevins
Christmas arrived early (Dec 12th, to be exact) for the citizens of La Mesa when the City Council voted down the prospect of digital billboards along the I-8 and 125 freeway merge. Earlier in September when the City Council voted 4-1 in favor of proposals for these billboards, the citizens of La Mesa quickly organized in opposition to them. Through monumental pressure in the form of emails, voicemails, letters, flyers, online petitions and paper petitions, the City Council felt the pressure to change their votes to 5-0 against digital billboards. This is truly democracy in action. The community advocacy group, Keep La Mesa Beautiful, collected close to 2000 signatures against these billboards citing the negative impact they would have on the City's public safety, economic well-being, environment, tourism, and home values. The group was led by Gerda Holmstrom, a former Cal Trans Outdoor Advertising Specialist, who shared specific knowledge regarding the legality of billboard placement in the City. Her knowledge, along with the group’s enthusiasm in maintaining La Mesa's peaceful ambiance and charm, propelled the citizens of La Mesa to this amazing win. In La Mesa, the prospect of digital billboards is now history! The people have spoken loud and clear! Hooray! We did it. Thanks for all your support. This is how democracy works! https://www.facebook.com/groups/863713162120656/permalink/875676754257630/?mibextid=Nif5oz
