Storm Spirit Day
SECONDARY SCHOOL
Every student and staff member at Selkirk will benefit from being part of an open-minded and innovative learning community built upon the pillars of respect, growth, and equity.
Selkirk continues to be a busy and vibrant learning community! Throughout the first two months of the year, the school has been busy with Fall sports and clubs, field trips, and various events organized by our Leadership class. Thank you to all staff and community volunteers for providing so many great learning opportunities for our students! Thank you as well to all parents and guardians for working in partnership with us to help provide these opportunities and for your support in keeping our student(s) focused on strong work habits and strong attendance! We are looking forward to another busy month in November with several upcoming activities including our Remembrance Day assembly and our upcoming Funderstorm (pep rally/indoor grade-wide games competition) event. Mid-term report cards will go home later in the month. If you have any questions or concerns at all please do not hesitate to contact us at the school. Looking forward to a great November.

Belonging
Selkirk’s Student Focus Group meets regularly to discuss our school mission, vision, and values and reflect on how things are going in various areas of the school. The group has divided into four key areas based on our values of Belonging, Generosity, Independence, and Mastery. Each group will be working on creating an inquiry question and action item for school improvement in their area. From the group, nine students have been identified to travel to Invermere to join a District Student Agency group with students from the other secondary programs in the district. The goal is to bring as much student voice to our district and school priorities, goals, and actions. Thank you to the great group of student leaders who have volunteered their time to join this group and to Leadership teacher Jaimee Pichette and Youth Care Workers Corey Millner and Robyn Wardle for joining Mr. Dolgopol in helping lead these discussions.

Youth Mental Health Information Session for parents The Kimberley PACs are working together to offer a parent information session on mental health supports and concerns in youth. The session will be held on November 13th at 7pm at Selkirk. Further details will be sent out by email and questions can be directed to Coralie at CoralieHockly@shaw.ca.
At Selkirk, we follow a progressive discipline policy and use the following themes in conveying our expectations to students.
The Kimberley Skatepark has recently built a cool new pump track, and the dirt park has been redone! Whether you just want to have fun or want to work on coordination and precision, the new pump track is your place to be. The new asphalt pump track is good for the community because it needs low maintenance and can be used by all ages. The dirt park has got some new features, like big wooden ramps (low maintenance), so you can get a consistent take-off every time. Also, these wooden ramps help progress you to hit bigger jumps, and they have different jump lines for different skill levels so you can work your way up to the most difficult line in the staging area. Velo Solutions Canada won the bid to help build the pump track and new dirt jumps. Velo is highly experienced in the building of several tracks across Canada. The Kimberley Skatepark also had numerous sponsors, including FR Rentals, Arrow and Axe, Shoppers Drugmart Kimberley, Blackdog Cycle and Ski, Bootleg Bike Co., Munter Design Build, Harvest Apartments, and City of Kimberley. Also, the generosity of countless community volunteers helped get it ready for the season. This project also received grants from Columbia Basin Trust and Hello BC. Kimberley is a great community, and we are lucky to have this addition for everyone of all ages to enjoy. Please be aware that the park has safety rules: it is equipped with clearly marked trails, safety signage, and has frequent maintenance checks to keep the environment safe. Additionally, the facility offers safety workshops and encourages the use of proper protective gear, fostering a culture of safety awareness among the biking community. It’s crucial for all riders, whether seasoned pros or newcomers, to prioritize safety while enjoying these exciting features. Citizens are encouraged to wear appropriate protective gear, including helmets, knee and elbow pads, and to familiarize themselves with the jumps before attempting them. Additionally, please ride within your skill level there are 3 levels of jumps and consider joining group rides to support one another. By practicing caution and respecting the park’s guidelines, we can ensure that everyone has a safe and enjoyable experience at the dirt jumps. Let’s make our new park a fun, safe space for all mountain bikers!

Selkirk high school hosts an informational assembly for students regarding the upcoming local and provincial elections. Written by: Tristan Hildebrant and Lane Oler
With the upcoming local and provincial elections, Selkirk hosted an assembly inviting local politicians running for the Colombia River Revelstoke area to come to Selkirk and give an explanation about their party's goals and concerns. Students gathered for an assembly where local politicians such as Andrea Dunlop (NDP), Calvin Beauchesne (Green Party) and previous Selkirk teacher Scott Mcinnis (Conservative) took the time to educate and encourage students to learn about their local governments, and their respective parties. Due to unforeseen circumstances, only Scott Mcinnis could make it in person, where the other candidates instead showed pre-recorded informational videos. Each candidate touched on some main election issues such as The B.C housing crisis, McInnis also discussed saying in an interview with the Revelstoke review: "I want to get some things rolling with housing to make sure that if we’re in government, or in opposition, that houses get built as quickly as possible. Because that’s one of our biggest challenges” Another major issue Scott Mcinnis touched on is youth voting. -Young Canadian voter percentages from 1970-2025 With the start of the decade there’s been a significant drop in youth votes and overall, within the last 25 years youth votes have decreased by 17%. All parties made it very clear that their main point was they wanted the youth to become more engaged in politics and emphasized how our youth need to get involved and vote. At the end of their introduction's, students were given the opportunity to ask Scott Mcinnis questions about the BC Conservative party and their plans and actions. The assembly was a precursor to a student vote where students vote for one of the three represented parties shown at the assembly, the school set up ballot boxes and attempted to create an authentic voting experience. With the end of the assembly and student vote, students will hopefully go on to learn more about the elections and parties in their classes and independently, leading to a generation of Canadians confident in their political voice.

October was a lively month for the Rocky Mountain International Student Program. Students embarked on an overnight journey to Calgary, passing through the iconic landmark towns of Lake Louise and Banff. Once in Calgary, they took advantage of the various shopping opportunities and explored Calgary’s downtown. Additionally, RMISP arranged an after-school pumpkin carving activity later in the month—a first for many participants—which proved to be a wonderfully messy endeavor, which fostered camaraderie and offered plenty of fun! RMISP is always looking for new host families. If you are interested or if you know someone who would like to learn more about our program, please reach out to our Kimberley homestay coordinator, Barbara del Pino, at barbara.delpino@sd6.bc.ca or text/call at 250-427-6168.
