Session 3: Directing - Preparation and Process Building on foundational skills, participants will look at how you develop and articulate a strong directorial concept that shapes the overall vision for a production. The course focuses on, script and score analysis, including history, genre and exploring the musical theatre form. It also explores the collaborative nature of theatre-making, with practical approaches to working closely with designers and other creatives to realise the production’s visual and technical elements. In addition, participants will deepen their understanding of actor direction, exploring rehearsal techniques and communication strategies to guide the overall production to align with the director’s vision.
Glen trained as an actor and worked with leading theatre companies, including Auckland Theatre Company, Silo Theatre, The Large Group, and Centrepoint Theatre, alongside many of New Zealand’s top actors and directors. In 2007, after training with Raymond Hawthorne, Glen began his directing career and has since directed for theatre companies all around New Zealand. From 2008 – 2011 Glen was the Artistic Director of the National Youth Theatre Company, was musical theatre lecturer at Unitec from 2010 & 2011, and in 2012 won Best Director at the Short and Sweet play festival. Glen has directed everything from plays to opera, but has a particular passion for musicals, with highlights being Hair, The Full Monty, Little Shop of Horrors, Anything Goes and most recently, Jersey Boys for Napier Operatic Society. His career has seen him work for New Zealand Opera, leading major events including the World Buskers Festival and Art Deco Festival, and since 2019, he has led the programming at Toitoi Hawke's Bay Arts and Events Centre.
Session 2: The Director's Fundamental Toolkit Directing Fundamentals is an introductory course designed for those who are new or wanting to upskill their directing for musical theatre. The session explores the director’s role in bringing a script and score to life, with a focus on creativity, storytelling, and concept development. Participants will be introduced to the basics of script and score analysis, the structure of the production and rehearsal process, and techniques for working with actors. The course also builds essential skills in leadership, collaboration, and critical thinking, offering a solid foundation for anyone interested in learning how to shape and lead a theatrical production.
