Test Your Heat Before it's too late Please take some time to test your heat in the month of October. We'd like to attend to any HVAC systems that need some care and attention before it becomes an emergency at night or when it's especially cold. Thank you for helping out our Maintenance Team.
Who won $100?
Autumn is that magical time when the air turns crisp, the sweaters come out, and we collectively pretend that we like pumpkin spice more than we actually do.
resident reminders
The trees are about to show us how lovely it is to let things go- except snacks, never let snacks go!
Emergency Light Testing WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 15TH We'll be conducting our annual testing of building emergency lights. During this time the halls and garage may be darker than usual. The testing will be done throughout the day. Please take extra caution when moving through these areas.
This month’s winner of our $100 lease renewal drawing is Annette F. of River Crossing.
Walkers & Scooters FOR THE SAFETY OF EVERYONE Please do not use walkers or scooters to prop doors open! Also, walkers and scooters should not be left in the common areas of the community or in hallways when you leave the building. You may, however, leave your walker or scooter near the elevator in the basement as you come and go. If you choose to do this, please be sure to park it out of the way of foot traffic for the safety and convenience of our residents. Please also note that Highlands Communities is not responsible for lost or stolen walkers or scooters.
Fall Clean Up It's that time of year again Please take some time to clean up your patios and balconies, ideally, by the beginning of November. Please cover or store your items during the winter months. When storing items in your common storage room in your building's garage, please be sure to cover and label with your name and apartment numbers. For a label, contact your Community Engagement Coordinator.
Filter Change & Annual Apartment Inspections a notice to our residents Throughout the month of October, our Maintenance Team will be conducting annual apartment inspections and replacing furnace filters. We change the filters twice a year as preventative maintenance and for your air quality. Should you prefer, we will install a specialized filter for your HVAC system. Please purchase and place it outside your furnace access panel. In preparation for our visit, please clear the area around your HVAC system so our Maintenance Team may easily access it. Your Property Director may also stop by your apartment on the same day of your apartment inspection. When our team has completed the inspection, they will lock your door, even if you left it unlocked, so please be sure to take your keys with you and plan accordingly.

Would you like to take richer, more colorful, focused, and stunning photos with your smartphone? It’s easy, taking great portraits with a smartphone involves a few key techniques to make the most of your smartphone camera:
Collage Making: Gather old magazines, newspapers, and colored paper to create a collage. This project requires minimal skills and allows for a lot of freedom. Just cut and arrange images and words to express a theme or tell a story. Abstract Painting: Use acrylic paints or watercolor and let your emotions guide your brush. Abstract painting is less about technique and more about expression, making it perfect for those new to painting. Handmade Cards: Create personalized greeting cards using simple materials like colored paper, markers, and stickers. This project is not only fun but also practical, as you can use the cards for special occasions. Clay Sculpting: Try molding air-dry clay into simple shapes or figures. Clay is forgiving and easy to work with, allowing for a hands-on, tactile experience. Nature Art: Collect leaves, flowers, and stones from outside and use them to make nature-inspired art. Arrange them on paper, canvas or create a nature collage. Doodle Art: Grab a sketchbook and let your pen wander. Doodling requires no formal training and can be a relaxing way to express creativity. Benefits of Creative Arts: Stress Relief: Engaging in art can be a calming activity, reducing stress and promoting mental well-being. Boosts Self-Esteem: Completing a creative project provides a sense of accomplishment and boosts self-confidence.
Let's get crafting
Exploring Creative Arts: Projects for Everyone
Lighting: Natural light works best, so try shooting outdoors or near a window during daytime. Avoid direct sunlight. Composition: Pay attention to your subject's position in the frame. The rule of thirds can help create a balanced composition. Experiment with angles—try shooting from slightly above or below eye level for different perspectives. Focus and Depth of Field: Tap on your subject on the screen to ensure they are in focus. Some smartphones also offer portrait mode, which can blur the background to make your subject stand out. Background: Keep backgrounds simple and uncluttered. A plain wall or nature backdrop can enhance your subject. Editing: Use photo editing apps to enhance colors, adjust exposure, and crop if needed. Avoid over-editing for a natural look. Connection: Establish a rapport with your subject to capture natural expressions. Candid shots convey more personality. Practice: Take lots of photos and experiment with different settings and techniques to discover what works best with your smartphone. By mastering these techniques, you can consistently capture compelling portraits.
Hands busy, mind happy! Crafting is therapy - less stress, more joy!

Yummy!
Halloween candy has a rich history, with treats like candy corn debuting in the 1880s, designed to look like corn kernels. Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, introduced in 1928, are a classic favorite, while M&M’s, launched in 1941, were initially designed for soldiers during WWII. The tradition of handing out candy on Halloween began in the 1950s, evolving from earlier practices of “trick-or-treating.” Today, Americans spend over $2 billion on Halloween candy annually, making it a major holiday treat industry.

Step 1: In a small saucepan, heat the milk over medium heat until hot but not boiling. Whisk frequently to prevent a skin from forming. Step 2: In a separate small bowl, mix the pumpkin puree with the pumpkin spice syrup (or pumpkin pie spice) and sugar until well combined. Step 3: Brew your coffee or espresso. Step 4: Stir the pumpkin mixture into the hot coffee or espresso. Then pour the hot milk and whisk until frothy. Step 5: Stir in the vanilla extract. Step 6: Pour the latte into a mug. Top with whipped cream and a sprinkle of extra pumpkin spice if desired.
The Jack O' Lantern tradition originated from Irish folklore, where people carved turnips to ward off evil spirits during Samhain, an ancient Celtic festival. Irish immigrants brought this practice to America in the 19th century, where they discovered pumpkins were better suited for carving due to their size and ease. By the early 20th century, pumpkins became the standard for Jack O' Lanterns, symbolizing Halloween and becoming a popular decoration and symbol of the holiday.
