Bob Hamilton Odontoglossums - Endangered Hybrids Tuesday, August 5th @ 7:00 PM
Born and raised in Berkeley, I retired as Principal Development Engineer from UC Berkeley where I oversaw the design, construction and management of semiconductor research labs, the Microfabrication Laboratory and its successor the Marvell Nanofabrication Laboratory. John Leathers, my partner of 50 years, and I grow orchids in a glass greenhouse in the backyard of our Berkeley home as well as a larger rented greenhouse in Pacifica. John’s interest is in Draculas and Masdevallias. My interest is in Odontoglossums. In addition to growing, we’ve explored the forests of Mexico, Central America and several Andean countries discovering new species and rediscovering orchids not seen in many decades. We do our own propagations in a laboratory in our home. I am interested in plant breeding and propagation developing and sharing techniques to increase plant chromosome numbers, a useful hybridizing tool. In addition to orchid raising, I enjoy art and playing classical piano music. Endangered Hybrids: Many of today's orchids contain the genome of superior orchid species imported from the tropics, mostly in the 19th and early 20th century. The Victorian orchid craze brought massive numbers of imports to the UK and Europe. From these hundreds-of-thousands, perhaps millions of plants, the best became the parents of today's hybrids. Most of these parents have perished thus their hybrids contain their genetic legacy of superior and unique characteristics. There will never again be significant imports of such superior plants given most of their habitats have been destroyed. Regrettably, hobbies in general, orchid growers among them, are in decline. CITES, an Ill-conceived attempt at conservation, has put the nail in the coffin for small orchid producers leaving behind only the typical orchids sold in big-box stores. My talk is a visual venture into the past, the present and the future of Andean orchid hybrids and species.

For over 70 years the SFOS mission has been to foster the culture and conservation of orchids and to promote education of its members and the public about orchids. Our goals include: an exchange of information from exhibitions, publications, and the Internet, maintenance of a reference library, and participation in worldwide activities.

It’s that time of year again—my Angraecums have finally woken up from their long winter rest, and they are absolutely bursting with life. After months of taking in water and light, they’ve rewarded me with elegant blooms, like stars suspended in the air. As I stood in the greenhouse the other day, basking in their fragrance and glowing flowers, I had a thought: these moments are too good not to share. For a long time, I’ve brought plants to our meetings, thinking that was the best way to spread the joy. But let’s be honest—we’re all already converts. We know the magic. We’re the choir. Lately, I’ve found myself on a mission to take orchids outside the orchid world. That means bringing blooming plants to work (yes, I’m that person in the office now). It means pulling out my phone at a bar in San Francisco and proudly showing strangers photos of Zootrophion, Angraecum, and Bulbophyllum. And you know what? People are into it. Sometimes confused. Often curious. But always drawn in. This connection to orchids—so strange, beautiful, and alive—taps into something deep. In an age of noise and screens and rush, sharing orchids reminds people of something gentle and grounding. A reason to pause. So here’s my invitation to all of you: take your orchids into the world. Not just to the shows and the meetings, but to the everyday places where people don’t expect them. Bring a blooming plant to your office. Leave a division at a neighbor’s doorstep. Share a photo on your social feed or—if you’re brave—start an orchid conversation with a stranger. We have something special here. Let’s keep spreading it. In bloom and in community, Derreck Carter-House President, San Francisco Orchid Society

Opportunity Table Want to win orchids? In-person attendees will continue to have many opportunities at the monthly meetings to win some great plants to add to their collection - but you have to be there to win!
Tips for the Virtual Meeting on Zoom We will continue hosting our meetings in a "hybrid" format using Zoom to maintain access for those who prefer the virtual format. Everyone is encouraged to either use the weblink or download the Zoom app ahead of the meeting to be able to better see and share the video content. For the virtual show and tell, send pics ahead of time to share - email to info@orchidsanfrancisco.org (by no later than the day before the meeting, though sooner is of course better to give Heidi & Kay more time to prepare)! The link to join the meeting is: https://zoom.us/j/2093634933 Zoom password: SFOS2025. Sometimes your PC may not have a microphone and in that case you can still use the computer and monitor and call in on the phone with the phone number - but make sure to turn off the computer speakers to avoid static feedback. We will also continue to record the meetings and post them on our Members Only website via our YouTube Channel - so if you miss a meeting or just want to go back and see it again - it is there - check it out!

Orchids in the Park 2025 Plant Sale Message from the SFOS Show Committee co-chair, Jeff Harris
WE NEED YOUR HELP!!
All current SFOS Members have the option to sell plants and plant related items at our events, and OITP2025 is right around the corner. PLEASE MARK YOUR CALENDAR & LET ME KNOW ASAP (Email jeff@orchidsanfrancisco.org) if you intend to sell at the live OITP 2025 member plant sale. Sale plants & plant related items sold will need to come into the venue on Friday July 25. As in recent years, we will need to get you to email us an inventory list of plants in advance of bringing in plants for the in-person member plant sale so we can have bar codes printed for you to put on your plants /sale items when you bring them into the venue. DEADLINE for inventory list to sell plants at member plant sale table is July 22nd at 8PM. Note: I will want your inventory list of plants emailed to me as an MS Excel or Google Spreadsheet file in a certain format- as follows: Column A as the "item name" starting with your code - typically your 3 initials followed by a 2 or 3 digit #, and a concise item or plant name (like "JMH-01 Maxillaria tenufolia"), Column B with a description of the item ("in 4" pot, not in bloom but blooming size, coconut fragrance, and easily grows in warm conditions Column C with your proposed selling price to the consumer excludingsalestax - note you get 75% of this and SFOS gets25% Column D with inventory # of this item (default is 1 unless you specify more divisions) Everyone selling at the Member Plant Sale (MPS) needs to sign up for at least one shift on the MPS table. Click Here to Volunteer to help out at OITP 2025 Thanks as always for your involvement. As always, feel free to text/call me at 650-303-6205 for questions.
We are looking for 5-10 volunteers to bake/bring ~2 dozen cookies each day of OITP25 (Friday - Sunday) to provide as a nice perk for volunteers and vendor staff; we request that those bringing the cookies provide a "label" with what major ingredients they contain (particularly allergens like nuts or wheat/gluten), and please have them on site around 11:30a-2pm so we gather them all together to distribute them.
