SECONDARY SCHOOL
Thanks to Sue at the Kimberley Edible Gardens & Greenhouse , in Townsite, for having Ms. Pavan's Storm Time group up to do some spring work and learn about the gardens.
Thanks so much to Bruce Kirkby for coming into Ms. Pavan's English 12 class and sharing your knowledge on speech delivery, content and preparation. You rock!
Grade 9 Sexual Health Retreat- All grade 9 students enjoyed a full-day field trip to the Kimberley Nordic Centre, embracing the wonderful outdoors while hearing from outside agency experts on important health outcomes. Engaging sessions focused on key health topics, including reproductive anatomy, safe sex practices, accessing sexual health services, healthy relationships and boundaries, consent, and preventing exploitation. This experience provided students with valuable knowledge and skills to support both their physical health and personal decision-making in a safe and supportive environment.
Every student and staff member at Selkirk will benefit from being part of an open-minded and innovative learning community built upon the pillars of belonging, generosity, mastery and independence.
Principal's Message
It’s hard to believe we are heading into the final month of the school year! May was another busy month with field trips, including a busy schedule for our Spring sports teams. As we enter the final month of the school year, I want to thank staff, students, coaches, volunteers, and parents/guardians for your support and efforts throughout the year. I remain proud to be part of such a strong and vibrant learning community that embraces our mission of embracing and cultivating our core values of belonging, generosity, mastery, and independence. As we head into June, I encourage students to stay focused on a strong finish to the year, to self-reflect on their year, and to begin to think of goals for next year. I wish you all a great June and look forward to seeing many of our senior parents at our Recognition Evening on June 4th at the McKim Theatre and/or grad activities on June 12th and 13th. Here’s to a successful finish to the year! ~Clint Dolgopol

Take Me Outside Day: Selkirk Secondary School’s Outdoor Education Initiative Selkirk Secondary School’s Outdoor Education 11 and 12 students hosted a Take Me Outside Day event for nearly 200 elementary students from the area. The event took place under blue skies at Wycliffe Regional Park. The event was part of the national Take Me Outside for Learning initiative, which encourages curiosity, connections and learning outside the classroom, in the community, and in nature. The Selkirk students researched activities then practiced, planned, and facilitated the day’s events. This event provided an authentic leadership opportunity for the Selkirk students, allowing them to develop, test and improve their leadership skills throughout the planning and facilitation process. Being the ‘Big Kids’ carried with it the responsibility that they were role models to the younger students and that their actions, far more than their words, had significant influence. Mr. Dan Clark, principal of Lindsay Park, and Bruce Hendricks, the Selkirk Outdoor Education teacher standing in for Jenn Meens, were the primary organisers and were ably supported by the elementary teachers. Those teachers accompanied their charges around the round robin of activities and supported Selkirk student leaders on group management strategies, dealing with difficulties (there were inevitably some tears as well as lots of laughter) and providing age-appropriate instructions.
Belonging
We had great turn out for our first Climate Club meeting! We will meet on Mondays at lunch in Mrs. Pasiechnyk’s room. This club is open to all students. Anyone interested in getting involved in our school community and taking positive action for our Earth is invited and welcomed to join!
Grade 8 students in Mr. Loftsgard’s and Mrs. Pasiechnyk’s classes hosted our own “mini Climate Conference” on May 11. As part of a cross-curricular unit on Climate Issues, students completed research on a climate related issue of their choice, in Science. Using this research, we worked collaboratively on formal essay writing in ELA. Finally, each group presented their research essay in the form of a speech, to showcase their expertise and educate their peers about these important topics. It was an informative and impressive event. Way to go, Selkirk!
At Selkirk, we follow a progressive discipline policy and use the following themes in conveying our expectations to students.

Ktunaxa Elders and Knowledge Holders generously shared about makingwa¢kna (dried meat), curing animal pelts, weaving with natural fibres, various aspects of maintaining food sovereignty, and the historic relationship between Ktunaxa and ?i.ka (Big Foot).
Independence
On Thursday, April 30, Indigenous students engaged in a full day of outdoor learning under the guidance of Rocky Mountain Metis Association Vice President Michael Niezen and his co- facilitators. The day was spent exploring concepts such as mindfulness, grounding, healthy boundaries, and personal strength while enjoying beautiful scenery in the Fort Steele area. We are incredibly fortunate to have support for this important learning through meaningful community partnerships.
All Grade 8 students at Selkirk will have the opportunity to experience place based learning at the Butte; 8-3 participated with Mrs. Pasiechnyk and Mr. Loftsgard on May 19. We were fortunate to learn from Dave Quinn, a local environmental educator and wildlife biologist, through CBEEN (Columbia Basin Environmental Education Network). Topics included the importance and role of grassland ecosystems, Kimberley’s unique ecology and geography, and the interconnectedness of our local plants, animals and peoples.
Generosity
Selkirk music students enjoyed a year-end trip to Calgary to wrap up the year and celebrate music. We have been so lucky to work with many incredible musicians this year, and it was such a treat to see professional performances throughout the weekend. We attended the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra at the Jack Singer Concert Hall on Friday evening and saw Mama Mia at the Calgary Jubilee on Saturday night. A huge thank you goes out to Mr. Heyde and all the parent chaperones, as well as Mr. Dolgopol, for making this possible.
Storm Report
Selkirk had an incredible spring sports season, filled with strong participation, outstanding leadership, and tremendous team spirit. We are extremely proud of all our student-athletes and coaches for their dedication and effort throughout the season. Girls Soccer had an amazing year, with such a strong turnout that we were able to field both junior and senior teams. The junior girls had a dominant season, capturing first place in Invermere, Creston, and at the Zones Championship tournament. Our senior team also had a fantastic year, battling hard in many exciting games and earning several impressive wins along the way. A big thank you to coaches Rhonda Carr, Geordie Driscoll, and Caitlin Strachan for your incredible dedication and leadership. Our Rugby Team showed tremendous commitment this season and finished strong, highlighted by an outstanding performance at the Mt. Baker tournament where they won all their games. We are so proud of their effort and are already looking forward to next season. Thank you to coaches Haylie Farquhar and Shawn Jacklin for your outstanding support. The Mountain Biking Team had another successful year. Friday afternoon rides became a highlight for many students, and it was great to see the enthusiasm and joy the riders brought to the trails. Thank you to coaches Jonas, Carrier, and Gruninger for creating such a positive and welcoming experience. Track and Field also had an outstanding season, with excellent results at every meet. Several athletes earned medals at the Zones Championship and had the opportunity to advance to Provincials. A huge thank you to coaches Rob Ochiena and Randy Moody for all your hard work in supporting our athletes. Our Golf Team enjoyed a fantastic season as well, with a large group of enthusiastic players taking part in practices and competitions. The team showed great improvement throughout the season and earned an impressive third-place finish at Zones. Thank you to Mr. Woytowich and Mr. Gruggen for your leadership and commitment. Thank you to all athletes, coaches, families, and supporters for making this spring season such a memorable one at Selkirk. Go Storm Go!!!
Rocky Mountain International Student Program
Our international students have experienced an incredible and unforgettable year in Kimberley. They embraced new challenges and opportunities at school and became an integral part of our vibrant community. To wrap up their Canadian experience with RMISP, students enjoyed an exciting trip to the Golden Skybridge. From crossing the canyon on the zipline or walking across spectacular hanging bridges to riding the mountain coaster and testing their skills at axe throwing, students enjoyed every moment of this adventure, while soaking up incredible mountain vistas. Some even took on the ultimate challenge—the thrilling Canyon Swing—for an extra dose of adrenaline. June will bring a few final opportunities to celebrate together, including a fun in-town Amazing Race and a farewell gathering at school, complete with cake and photos. As our students prepare to return home, we wish them all the very best. We hope they carry with them lasting friendships, wonderful memories, and a special connection to Kimberley. Become a host family! The Rocky Mountain International Student Program is looking for host families for our new students arriving in September 2026. Families receive a monthly stipend to help cover hosting expenses, and 24/7 support from our team of Homestay Coordinators.
