Turning Awareness into Impact What truly sets Shine4U Records apart is its innovative operational blueprint. Operating as a streamlined virtual label, Shine4U doesn’t rely on a single physical brick-and-mortar headquarters; instead, it collaborates dynamically across a network of diverse recording studios both locally in Hampshire and nationally.
For our community, the re-emergence of Richard ‘Ricky’ Palmer is more than a standard artistic comeback. It is a raw, heart-stopping celebration of survival, identity, and the power of music to drag him back from the precipice of despair.
Founded under the burning motto, "Shining a light by giving more than we receive," the project fuses raw creative energy, frontline healthcare expertise, and fierce mental health advocacy into a single, unstoppable community movement.
Join the Movement Shine4U Records is living proof that art can heal what medicine cannot touch. For neighbours in Portsmouth and music fans globally, supporting this life-saving ecosystem requires nothing more than pressing play.
Instead, like a phoenix rising from the embers of burnout, his survival arrived in the shape of a guitar and the raw salvation of songwriting. A timely intervention by a close friend ignited a creative spark, waking him from a painful mental hibernation and ultimately saving his life.
Operating straight out of Cosham, this independent, non-profit label is proving that music isn't just entertainment—it can act as a profound sonic lifeline and literal medicine for the soul.
Every stream directly provides the vital resources needed to keep vulnerable members of the Hampshire community anchored, heard, and protected.
The primary pulse of this impact supports Portsmouth’s own grassroots organisation, S.A.L.T. (Suicide Awareness Let's Talk). The label works hand-in-hand with them on the ground, most notably anchoring live performances at the annual S.A.L.T. Festival in Victoria Park. Events like this dismantle the isolation of mental illness, using live music to force open critical conversations and obliterate the stigma surrounding suicide.
If you are a local creative looking to collaborate, or a neighbour navigating a dark storm of your own, the message from Cosham is loud, clear, and uncompromising: look out for one another, keep talking, and never let the music stop.
Through the label's collaborative wing, The Shine4U Project, Palmer unites international artists with local Hampshire instrumentalists, weaving diverse elements into a message of pure resilience.
There is a storm a-comin’. Richard ‘Ricky’ Palmer is officially Back from Hibernation
Shine4U Records was originally born five years ago, but this profound personal battle completely redefined its mission. It transformed the label from a standard creative venture into an unshakeable anchor designed to weather the most violent storm in anyone's heart.
"We aren't bound by a brick-and-mortar headquarters. As a virtual label, we collaborate dynamically with studios across the country to turn independent tracks into powerful platforms for mental health awareness."
Launching the "Rickabilly" Revolution Musically, the label is the global birthplace of two unique subgenres pioneered by Palmer: "Rickabilly"—a high-octane hybrid of 1950s rockabilly swing mixed with massive modern pop hooks—and "Ricksteady," which blends the upbeat rhythms of Ska, reggae, and rocksteady with grassroots philanthropy.
The Rhythm of Recovery: How Portsmouth’s Shine4U Records turns "Rickabilly" Beats into a Lifeline for the Soul
Richard_Ricky_Palmer
In a global music industry dominated by cold algorithms and corporate bottom lines, Portsmouth’s Shine4U Records has completely shattered the traditional commercial playbook.
Waking from Hibernation: When Music Intervened to Heal the Healer The heartbeat behind Shine4U Records belongs to Richard "Ricky" Palmer. By day, he is a veteran NHS Advanced Nurse Practitioner and respiratory specialist, a man whose entire life has been anchored in healing others. But when the storm hit his own life, Palmer quietly slipped into a dark, devastating mental health crisis. At his absolute edge, clinical medicine couldn't pull him back.
Rather than simply functioning as a corporate royalty distributor, the label’s real power lies in its protective ecosystem. When a project launches under the Shine4U wing, the label provides a safe, nurturing incubator for independent artists to creatively develop, while using the immense momentum of the music release to heavily promote, spotlight, and champion vital grassroots causes.
Currently seeking official CIC (Community Interest Company) status, the label is built entirely around championing community and supporting others.
Shine4URecords
Portsmouth’s independent singer-songwriter, clinical frontline worker, and mental health champion has stepped out of the darkness. He is making his vital return to the pages of Forever with Pride LGBTQ+ E-Magazine (https://foreverwithpride.com/).

Inspired by real-life events from my youth, this story is rooted in truth, with only the names changed to protect the individuals involved. The eerie sounds emanating from the attic and bedroom of the family home serve as the focal point, leading readers into an immersive exploration of the paranormal, supernatural, and the occult. My aim is to captivate audiences with a compelling narrative, leaving them spellbound and perhaps even chilled to the bone. Unravelling the mystery behind these enigmatic noises becomes the central obsession—could it be mere creaks of the house or something far more malevolent?

He truly is the full package.
I glanced down. ‘Well, you clearly inherited that from your mother’s side.’
My first job was working on the box office of the Midlands Arts Centre, situated in Birmingham’s Cannon Hill Park. We sold tickets for live theatre, cinema, courses, and dealt with gallery sales.
‘Do you mind me asking,’ I said to this buddy, as he washed at my bathroom sink, ‘but where are your family from?’ His background was hard to pinpoint.
His is truly spectacular. The most beautiful I’ve ever seen… and I’ve done extensive research into this matter. It deserves its own place on a gallery wall.
Dealing with this enquiry had become a highlight of our working day.
Ironically, this lad can sometimes be a little too cocky.
His one shortcoming is that he can be a tad full of himself.
Customer and clerk stared at each other for a moment, then burst out laughing.
The customer enquired about the title.
Truth be told, size really doesn’t matter to me.
My colleague braced themselves, set their face in neutral, took a deep breath, and, in professional tone, informed the customer, ‘It is called… ‘Oh What a Beautiful Cock’.’
Quick as a flash, he asked, ‘Do I look Spanish?’ He looked at me with endearing glee and hopefulness.
Cock of the Walk
‘I suppose so,’ I chuckled, ‘but I would have said Moroccan.’
He was impressed. ‘My mother is Moroccan and my dad’s Pakistani.’
I‘m far more likely to have my head turned by a handsome face, nice eyes, and a cute smile.
My blessed buddy has these assents too.

I regret not buying this artwork myself, just as a conversation starter.
There are exceptions to the rule, he informed me.
On one occasion, a customer approached the desk and asked my colleague about an item of art they were interested in buying. It was part of an exhibition of ink paintings by children from China.
The title of that child’s painting could aptly apply to a Grindr buddy of mine.
This particular piece was a rendering of a magnificent cockerel.
Two very nice varieties of Achillea which are drought tolerant and they come in a whole range of colours. They attract lots of pollinating insects and are easy to buy from garden centres without being too expensive. They will develop well from small
salads just like the red ones.
Some chillis freshly harvested from just two plants. They can be used fresh as they are or they can be dried for giving heat to a dish.
Still no fear of frozen assets for some time so don’t let them overheat either and take on your gardening jobs gradually else you will only regret it. Stay safe out there and enjoy the late sun.
There is no need to take up your Dahlias until the first frost appears – they can tolerate that and pulling up too early means you will miss out on lots of flowers. Similarly, no need to wrap up tender plants in their frost protection yet as they are still growing.
Herbaceous plants are traditional cottage garden favourites and they do well in strong sun and can even be used in a vase for cut flower and foliage backing. They can cope with less water especially if bulky organic material is added to the soil and they are mulched up. They come in lots of colours and sizes so these may well be a good choice for you going forward.
The sun has helped us gardeners with a reduction in the number of slugs and snails in the garden but as soon as the rain came they all came out of their hiding places, thankfully too late to spoil the summer plants. Fruit trees and bushes do well if they get sufficient water but what can you plant that isn’t so thirsty?
I’ve taken my tomato plants out of the greenhouse and I guess most of you will have done so by now. I still have bell peppers and chillies growing but very soon will take these out. You can keep the plants if you want to but you will have to cut them hard back a bit like Fuchsias and keep them away from frost if you want to use them next year to get a head start. Most people will just harvest them and compost the plants and start again next year with seed and that may well be the most straight forward thing to do.
1st October
If you are emptying your greenhouse, with the weather being so good, you can clean the glass in the greenhouse and remove any dead leaves and fruit as they will only encourage pests like slugs and snails and disease such as botrytis. If you’ve grown in large containers so now have a lot of used and spare compost, you can either save it and plant potatoes in it or use it for your bulb containers – bulbs don’t need fresh compost. Or you can add to your garden soil to improve it. Either way it’s great for recycling.
The rain we’ve had along with the sun has made all the weeds grow so keep on top of them as you don’t want them to drop their seeds all over your garden.
Don’t forget the insects – you can make insect houses for the winter out of old sticks, bits of bamboo and whatever is available. It’s cheaper than paying for one from the garden centre. If you have the space, you can create your own log-pile in the corner of the garden which will be great for wildlife to over winter in. Piles of leaves can be good for hedgehogs, or you can make or buy a hedgehog house for them to spend the winter in.
Here I am writing this for you lovely gardeners at the end of September for your October issue and the sun is beating down and it’s more than twenty degrees outside. For this time of year, it’s crazy but very nice to feel as it’s not so intense as it has been. My grass has come back strongly after its autumn top dressing and is a lovely fresh green colour. Gone are the brown scorched patches thankfully. If you have any bare patches left you still have time to put some seed on to them and sprinkle with some water. The forecast is for a nice week ahead so it should germinate in plenty of time for the winter ahead.
Autumn colour is set to be very good this year so don’t miss out by pruning shrubs before they’ve dropped the leaves otherwise you will miss all that colour particularly on the likes of Japanese Maples. You can cut back old growth on pond plants if they’re looking a bit scruffy. The sun is keeping the fish active but officially at least you should be reducing their feed but who knows how long this sunny weather is going to last this year.

Drought Resistant Plant Focus
One of the jobs that is obvious in my front garden is that the Lavendar needs the old flower heads and storks clipping off. They’ve done fantastic all summer and the bees have loved them. The smell from the flowers was a nice bonus and so the flowers have got long stems making them easy to trim with some hand shears. All you need to do is remove the old flower stems not trim the plants themselves.
If you want to have flowering bulbs for Christmas now is the time to be preparing for it. There are the Lillywhite Daffodils that act as an air freshener as well as great flowers at a fairly dull time of year and of course Amarylis that have a variety of red, white and pink enormous trumpet flowers that always look so impressive. If you plant up over an extended period you can have continuous flowers for weeks.
Don’t throw away any green tomatoes as if left upside down ideally attached to the truss they will ripen ready for use in sauces or

plants and will give interest from the time they’re planted.

As with other trainings, we offer payment plans and bursaries.
Many attendees from previous GBTQ+ trainings have talked about feeling safe knowing that they were entering a space where they’d be in the majority for one of the few times in their lives. They’d also be with people who have had similar journeys and life experiences, such as coming out or experiencing various forms of discrimination that GBTQ+ people face and could understand them in a way that other facilitators may not be able to.
Another thing that enhances this sense of community is that, from the first GBTQ+ NWTA onwards, participants have come to us through word of mouth or personal recommendations, or therapists and counsellors. We’d like to continue this as far as possible.
I feel immense pride and privilege knowing I’m part of the team preparing for the ManKind Project’s UK and Ireland (MKP UK&I) 4th NWTA for GBTQ+ people. This training is predominantly for those who identify as Gay/Bisexual/Trans/Queer or Questioning. Most processes are the same as the other New Warrior Training Adventures. However, a key difference is that all participants and most staff are from the GBTQ+ communities or consider themselves allies.
GBTQ Gateway
This safe space is enhanced by the team that supports the training. Many staff have attended previous versions of the GBTQ+ NWTA and, inspired by what they’ve gained or because it’s part of their journey, have come back to support a new generation.
Do you or someone in your life - a best friend, partner, lover, ex, or member of your emotional or biological family need to be part of this training and our community?
Both helped create a safe space that gave attendees the opportunity to look at themselves and their lives in ways they couldn’t imagine or wouldn’t dare before. Or may not have been possible without having the mirror of someone who has lived a similar life.
This changes nothing, and it changes everything. Unlike other personal development events, where you can feel like a minority or like you can’t share your whole self.
New Warrior
Once you join our community, you can take part in the monthly Zoom meetings where we can connect with each other. There are also pan-European events and opportunities to participate in other MKP trainings both in the UK and Ireland communities and further afield.
The enrolment page link is here.
Training Adventure
This cross-generational work feels unique and is something many consider a strength of MKP UK&I’s GBTQ+ community. In this spirit of community development and supporting each other on our respective journeys, the GBTQ+ NWTA is often considered a gateway into our community.

We present three showcases a year, giving members of our Acting Class and Queer Play Reading Club a live platform to share their talents and tell Queer stories.
Commitment and Rehearsals
There is no fee to appear in the showcase itself. We do, however, ask everyone taking part to commit to at least eight classes between now and the performance, or two Loyalty Passes covering October and November.
Finding Your Material
If you have any questions, please let me know. If there are any obstacles, reach out to me directly so I can see how we can support you. I’m incredibly excited for us to come together to tell Queer stories, perform for a Queer audience and continue building our Queer creative community.
Please also try to keep the whole day free on 25th November for technical and dress rehearsals ahead of the evening performance.

I’m delighted that tonight we begin exploring material for our next Outcast Showcase of Queer Actors and Writers, taking place at the Two Brewers on 25th November.
If you’re a writer, please send me any pieces you’d like considered for performance by our actors, or bring along something you’d like to perform yourself. If you’re an actor, we’ll support you in finding material that showcases your talents.
We know many of our members love to work with us specifically for the showcases. We'd love to have you back with us, and if you've enjoyed a little break, now is the time to come back and meet the many gorgeous newcomers who have joined the family too. Please note, we will not allow members to join the showcase with only a few weeks before the performance.
Returning Members
Complimentary tickets will be available for agents, casting directors, directors and other industry guests who could support your careers. We’ll be looking for members to help us use our industry database to invite the right people for those taking part.
Everyone who performs will receive a recording of their performance from The Show Reel Company, along with a showreel and copies of the professional photographs taken at the showcase. We’ll also share performance clips on our social media.
Recordings, Photographs and Industry Invitations
We’d love you to work together to find scenes. For now, please aim to appear in one piece so we can give everyone equal time and exposure. Once we know the running order and the size of everyone’s roles, we may be able to add monologues or second scenes.

It All Makes Sense Now, For most of my life, I felt like I was searching for a version of myself that everyone else seemed to find so effortlessly. While other people appeared to fit neatly into the roles expected of them, I spent years trying on different identities, hoping one would finally feel right. As a child, I was what many would have called a stereotypical "tomboy". I played football, preferred boys' clothes, and often felt more comfortable being included with the boys than the girls. Yet even then, something never quite clicked. I went through different phases, experimenting with fashion, trying to be more feminine, following trends, and attempting to present myself in ways that seemed expected. No matter what I tried, it never felt natural. Like many young people, I struggled through the usual challenges of growing up: puberty, attraction, friendships, and wondering what kind of future I wanted. But there were additional layers of confusion that made those years even harder. I experienced trauma during my childhood that left me questioning how I should present myself and who I was supposed to be. The confusion followed me into my teenage years. Searching for answers, I often looked in the wrong places. I drank heavily, put myself in risky situations, and experimented with relationships in the hope that I might finally feel at peace. Instead, I found myself feeling even more lost. At sixteen, I became pregnant with my first daughter. While many people describe pregnancy as a joyful experience, for me it felt like I was playing a role in someone else's life. I struggled deeply with becoming a mother, not because I didn't love my daughter, but because I felt disconnected from the identity everyone expected me to embrace. Suddenly I was being told how a mother should behave, what a woman should do, and who I was meant to become. I tried my best to fit that mould. I convinced myself that if I worked hard enough, the feelings would disappear. Instead, they grew stronger. The more I tried to become the person others expected, the less I recognised myself. When I became pregnant again at eighteen, those feelings intensified. The medical appointments, conversations about womanhood and motherhood, and constant reminders of how people perceived me all amplified an uncomfortable truth I didn't yet have the language to understand. Looking back, I realise I was suppressing my gender identity because I didn't know there were other possibilities. I had never heard of transgender people. I didn't know transition existed. I thought these feelings were simply something I had to carry forever. As I got older, I began exploring my sexuality more openly. I knew I was attracted to women, and for a time I believed that understanding my sexuality would answer the questions I had about myself. Leaving my relationship and embracing my identity as a lesbian felt liberating. For the first time, life became a little easier. I became part of the queer community and met people who encouraged me to express myself authentically. I cut my hair short, dressed in ways that felt natural, and allowed myself to present more masculinely. Although I was becoming more comfortable, there was still something I hadn't fully uncovered. Then came the conversation that changed everything. One day, I met someone who complimented my outfit. During our conversation, he mentioned finding it difficult to buy jeans that fit because of his height and hips. Laughing, he added, "You'd think being on testosterone would help." I was confused. "What do you mean by taking testosterone?" I asked. He smiled and replied, "Well, I'm trans. I was born female, but I transitioned to a man." In that moment, something shifted. I had never knowingly met a trans man before. I asked questions, eager to understand. As he shared his experiences, I felt an overwhelming sense of recognition. The feelings he described mirrored my own. The discomfort, the confusion, the sense of being an impostor in your own life. For the first time, someone was putting words to emotions I had carried for years. Over the following days, I immersed myself in research. I read stories, watched videos, and learned everything I could about transgender identities. With every article and every personal account, another piece of the puzzle fell into place. What I discovered wasn't a new identity. It was the truth I had been searching for all along. After years of trying to become someone else, I finally understood who I was. Everything made sense. I wasn't broken. I wasn't confused. I wasn't failing at being a woman. I was a man. And for the first time in my life, I could see myself clearly.

Some stories are written. Others wait patiently for us to remember them. After years of imagination, artwork, storytelling, and dreaming, I am thrilled to announce that Dragon Dreams & Raindrops: The Dream Keeper Awakens is officially published and available on Amazon.
Dragon Dreams & Raindrops is about belonging. It is about the child who feels different, the child who sees the world a little differently, and the grown-up who may have forgotten that part of themselves.
Perhaps growing up was never supposed to mean abandoning magic. Perhaps we simply needed someone to remind us where to look.
Guided by the ancient and loving Grandmother Dragon, she journeys into hidden dragon realms filled with Rain Dragons, Cloud Dragons, Fire Dragons, Sea Dragons, Forest Dragons and ancient beings sleeping beneath the mountains. Along the way, she discovers the Heart Tree, where the dreams of those who still believe in kindness, hope and wonder continue to shine.
It may simply mean you have discovered a doorway others have forgotten how to see. The book has already begun growing beyond its pages. Our Dragon Dream Friends, a companion colouring book filled with playful baby dragons, is part of the emerging Dragon Dreams world, with more stories, characters and creative experiences still to come. For me, seeing Dragon Dreams & Raindrops finally become a book that a child can hold is deeply meaningful. A world that lived for years inside my imagination now belongs to its readers, too.
Too often, children receive the message that belonging requires becoming more like everyone else. I wanted to offer them another possibility: perhaps the very qualities that make us different are the ones worth protecting.
In the dragon realms, wonder isn't childish. Sensitivity isn't a weakness. Imagination isn't something to outgrow. And being different doesn't mean you don't belong.
But this is more than a story about dragons.
This book began long before there was a finished manuscript. Its roots live in paintings, poems, motherhood, and my lifelong belief that imagination is not something we are meant to leave behind when we grow up.
At the heart of the story is a little girl who discovers that dragons never disappeared at all. Humans simply forgot how to see them.
And somewhere, Grandmother Dragon is still waiting. Until next time, little dreamer…
