An overall record of 1202 wins with 359 losses, Jerry Boatner led the West Lauderdale Knights to a state record 14 state championships over a 50 year career (5 years at Clarkdale High School and 45 years at West Lauderdale). The winningest high school baseball coach in Mississippi, Coach Boatner has also been inducted into 6 Hall of Fames (Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame, ABCA, East Mississippi Community College, Delta State University, Crossroads Diamond Club, and the Mississippi Association of Coaches). Coach Boatner has also received numerous National and Regional Coach of the Year awards, Field of the Year, and continues to speak at state baseball conventions. Coach Boatner had 134 players receive Community College and/or Division I or II scholarships, 10 players advance to the professional level, and 18 former players in the coaching profession. In addition, Jerry Boatner finished with a 610-135 record and 8 State Championships in slow pitch softball from 1990-2009. In 1973, Coach Boatner received a call from the West Lauderdale principal, R.B. Gary to become the Knights Head Baseball Coach with the responsibility of building a baseball field. There was no money to begin the building program, therefore Coach Boatner contacted several interested community individuals who signed $1,000 notes to borrow $27,000. Through a candy fundraiser, $3,500 was collected for grading and planting Tifton Bermuda Grass. Seven additional community individuals signed $1,000 notes to pay for a chain link fence around the playing field. These notes were paid within 18 months by fundraisers such as: donkey basketball, All American Red Head basketball games, barbecue and chicken fries, t-shirt and jacket sales, stadium cushion sales, and season ticket sales. The following projects continued... Construction of a two story service building; housing a concession stand, two bathrooms, storage room for equipment. Upstairs a 15x30 carpeted press box and coaches office was added. Volunteers performed most of the labor. Two dugouts were added and both projects were completed for $10,000. Two sets of bleachers, seating approximately 300 people each were constructed at a discounted cost of $3,000. The quality of the bleachers were unexpected and a positive addition. Labor and equipment was donated. And additional 20 people signed $1,000 notes to complete the project in the spring of 1975. The total cost of the baseball field and facilities was $35,000 and bank loans $27,000. A total of $60,000 was raised in 6 ½ years. The last note was paid March 6, 1981. Our field is unique because it was made possible through the combined effort from interested and concerned community individuals. Since 1981 - Three major improvements and additions have been completed. 1988 - Field House was completed to accommodate 40 lockers. 1999 - Tops were added to the two batting cages. New fixtures were added to the light poles. 2000 - A drain tile system was installed. Covers to both bleachers were added which gave the field a stadium look. 2007 - A second covered hitting facility was added. 2008 - The entire seating area was completely joined with a covered top. Permanent stadium seats were installed around the backstop. A wrought iron fence was installed around the entire facility. A sky box was constructed above the press box. Concession stands and dugouts were bricked. Slay Steel and H&H Flooring made tremendous contributions along with others. 2009 - Sidewalks and a driveway were added to the home and visitor dugouts and batting cages. New field lighting was added. Ten feet of additional seating was added to both sides of the bleachers with steps and railing. 2010- Wall of Fame was added recognizing previous players for their baseball accomplishments after leaving West Lauderdale Sports injury and treatment facility was added. 2012 - Batter’s Eye was erected behind center field fence. 2013 - Protective nets were installed in front of both dugouts. Renovations were made to both men’s and women’s bathroom. 2014-2015 - Additional drainage tiles were installed and sand added to raise the field. Lawn chair and handicap covered area with 18 seats were added to both the home and visitor sides. 2016 - Tornado damage occurred three weeks before the season. Damages included bathrooms, trees, hitting facility, locker room, left field wall, outside fence, signage, scoreboard, batter’s eye, and scattered debris. Many from our community, fans, and local baseball teams graciously helped in our clean up effort. We began our season without missing a game. 2017 - Brick wall was extended down both right and left field. 2018 - Junior High locker room enlarged. Turf was added to bullpens. Dugout roofs were extended to safety nets and new padding added. 2019 - Replaced all batting tunnel nets in hitting facility. Added over 30 cubic yards of infield dirt. Re-carpeted practice bullpens. 2020 - Painted home and visiting bleachers. Rapsodo swing analysis hitting unit purchased. Replaced batting tunnel nets on visitor side. Replaced lettering on scoreboard 2021 - Replaced Batters Eye, All netting in front of bleachers, Painted Outfield Fence, New Alumni Board 2022 - Added padding to backstop, Replaced State Championship Outfield Signs.
