Every student and staff member at Selkirk will benefit from being part of an open-minded and innovative learning community built upon the pillars of respect, growth, and equity.
It’s hard to believe we are already in March and that Spring is just around the corner. February was a busy month highlighted by course selection for next year, athletic tournaments and the end of our winter sports season, our Valentine’s Dance, and Pink Shirt Day. March will be a busy but short month culminating with our Talent Show the Friday before Spring Break. A big thanks goes out to all those who continue to offer great curricular and extracurricular activities for our students. We look forward to sharing some pictures and highlights from these activities in our next newsletter at the beginning of May. The last day of classes before Spring Break is Friday, March 14th. School will return to session on Monday, March 31st. We wish you all a great March and Spring Break! ~ Clint Dolgopol

Selkirk was the successful applicant of a BC, Farm to Cafeteria grant. We are using our funding to provide community partners the ingredients to serve smoothies while fostering relationships with our students.
Generosity
Some of our Indigenous Education Students participated in a District Winter Camp Day at ?Akisqnuk First Nation. It was a beautiful day of land- based learning that included gratitude, mindfulness, nature and food security.
At Selkirk, we follow a progressive discipline policy and use the following themes in conveying our expectations to students.
What do jet fuel, medicine, vaccines, engine oil, breweries, perfume, and anti-infrared paint have in common? Our chemistry 12 class was lucky to have Dr. David Dick, a faculty member from the College of the Rockies chemistry department, come into our class and help explain some applications of the concepts students are learning in Chemistry 12. Thank you, Dr. Dave! The answer: Chemistry!
Mastery
Congratulations to Nia Dreher and Taylor Thorpe who placed 2nd, and Seth Strauss who placed 3rd in the KEP Simulation Showdown and Pitch Competition at College of the Rockies! These students competed against 52 teams, comprised of Entrepreneurship students from Selkirk Secondary and Mt. Baker Secondary and first year business students from College of the Rockies and Selkirk College.

As we approach the end of the winter sports season, I would like to take a moment to acknowledge the outstanding achievements and efforts of our teams. Firstly, congratulations to our Bantam Girl’s basketball team for their impressive win at the Zones Championship this past weekend. Their dedication and teamwork have truly paid off, and we are proud of their accomplishments. We want to applaud our Bantam boys’ basketball team for their hard work, which earned them a commendable second-place finish in their Zones Championship. Our Senior Girl’s Basketball team also deserves recognition for their strong performance, securing a second-place finish in the East Kootenay Championship. Their resilience and teamwork were evident throughout the tournament. All our teams showed great spirit and determination throughout their seasons, representing Selkirk with pride. Congratulations as well to our Boys curling team and our downhill ski and snowboard teams who represented Selkirk at provincial championships the end of February. Finally, thank you to all our athletes, coaches, and supporters for making this winter sports season so memorable. Your contributions to our school’s athletic community are invaluable.
Storm Report
Our Ski & Snowboard Team trained Friday afternoons in January to prepare for our Zones race. While many athletes were new to racing, their experience and efforts paid off with visible improvements in their racing and times. Unfortunately, due to cold weather the Kootenay Zones Championship Race was cancelled due to cold weather and disappointed athletes were unable to compete in the Kootenays. Coaches nominated athletes to attend provincials and Selkirk sent a team of 20 skiers and snowboarders to compete at Troll Ski Resort near Quesnel BC from February 24-26. Elliot Bailey podiumed with a bronze medal in male snowboard GS. Tiegann Bates finished just outside the podium with a 5th place finish while her sister Kalisa finished top 20 in female snowboard GS. Other notable performances came from Michael Cahlik and Graeson Christie with top 20 finishes in male ski GS. Many athletes attended provincials for the first time and it was a great experience for all!
Spring Sports Starting after Spring Break: Girls Soccer, Rugby, Mountain biking, Track & Field, Golf
The 2025 Provincial Curling Championships took place in Kimberley, BC, in partnership with the Kimberley Curling Club and Selkirk, attracting 16 teams from across the province. Our local team, Kyle Scott, Tyson Scott, Ty Pollock, Zak Pollock, and Wyatt Bjerstedt showcased their skills and resilience, finishing 9th place amidst strong competition. Selkirk extends our sincere gratitude to the many volunteers from both the curling club and Selkirk for their unwavering support and hard work, and coach and tournament chair Blair Jarvis, who made this event a resounding success and a memorable experience for all involved.
Flower Basket Fundraiser is done! Great work everyone. We should have a total raised soon. Please make sure you've kept your orders organized and are ready to help deliver on May 8th!
