PRESIDENTS MESSAGE: we want you!
June is the half-way mark for the year and officer elections for 2026 should be voted on at the November meeting. We could use some help in a few positions. Read our current Bylaws. NOW - Meeting Cashier It would be helpful to have someone who regularly attends the monthly General Membership meeting to manage payments and cash that we take in during the meeting. You’d have to detail the three or four categories (membership, food, merchandise, raffle/donations) on a summary sheet and then take the deposit to the bank Thursday or Friday after the meeting and send a short report with copies of any receipts to our Treasurer. This is not an official position, but I could use some help with this. 2026 - Treasurer The Treasurer is the responsible agent for maintaining the association funds and receiving and disbursing all funds in accordance with bylaws. The treasurer prepares an annual budget for the association, obtains the approval of the Board of Directors, and presents it to the membership for a vote at the second General Meeting of the year. The treasurer is the responsible agent for the preparation and filing of the association’s tax reports as required and providing written financial reports to members upon reasonable request. This could certainly be the same person as the Meeting Cashier, above. 2026 - President The President presides at all general, business and special meetings and is the principal agent in matters pertaining to liaison with government, commercial or private enterprises, except as hereinafter provided and coordinates the activities of the association and serves as Chairperson of the Board of Directors. He or she is required to be a pilot, and will appoint committees as necessary to facilitate and expedite the aims and objectives of the association. The Immediate Past President supports the effort by recruiting a slate of officers for the upcoming year. The term is one year. Let me know if you are interested in helping with these or other roles. As our organization grows, there’s plenty of opportunity to get involved. See you at the airport! Chris

An update from the managers desk of kaun
Incident Involving Aircraft Departing Auburn Municipal Airport At approximately 8:00 AM the morning of May 1, 2025, a single-engine aircraft departed Auburn Municipal Airport (KAUN), reportedly en route to Nevada County Airport in Grass Valley (KGOO). Airport staff were later informed that the aircraft did not arrive at its intended destination and had crashed in Nevada County. The matter is currently under investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), more information on the investigation can be found on the NTSB’s website and under NTSB# WPR25FA146. As a precautionary measure, Auburn Airport staff immediately suspended fuel sales in the event that fuel quality could have been a contributing factor. Upon further review, it was confirmed that the aircraft in question had not fueled at the Auburn Airport that morning or anytime recently according to fuel sale records. Since the last known fuel sale, the airport has received multiple fuel deliveries, and there have been no reported fuel-related issues. Out of an abundance of caution, airport staff conducted additional fuel quality testing that morning. All results confirmed that the fuel supply was within safety and quality specifications. Based on those findings, fuel sales were resumed later that day. The City of Auburn and Auburn Municipal Airport extend our deepest sympathies to all those affected by this incident. We remain committed to maintaining the highest standards of safety and will continue to support the investigation in any way we can. Minimum Operating Standards – Progress Update Work continues on updating the Minimum Operating Standards for Auburn Municipal Airport. Our goal is to establish a set of standards that’s not only clear and comprehensive but also sustainable for the long term. If you haven’t already shared your thoughts, we’d love to hear from you. Please reach out to me or connect with any of the project liaisons listed below. Every contribution strengthens the final product. We are aiming to have a revised draft ready for your review within the next month. Thank you for your continued involvement and commitment to the future of Auburn Municipal Airport. Project Liaisons: Ken Dwelle, Kent English, Dan Flom, Richard Byrod, Bryan Souza, Andy Robinson, Rick Duste Continued Dedication to Safety I’m honored to share that I have recently been appointed as a representative for the FAA’s Safety Team (FAAST Team). This role represents both a personal and professional commitment to furthering aviation safety here at Auburn Municipal Airport and throughout the region. As a FAAST Team representative, I’ll be working closely with the FAA and local aviation stakeholders to support safety education, host outreach events, and promote initiatives aimed at reducing the number of general aviation accidents. If you’re hosting an event or have an idea that could benefit from FAAST Team involvement, please don’t hesitate to reach out. Many of these activities are eligible for WINGS credit, an excellent incentive for continued pilot proficiency. For those unfamiliar with the WINGS – Pilot Proficiency Program, I highly recommend exploring the program at FAASafety.gov. It offers a wide range of educational resources tailored to pilots at every level. If you’re already participating, I’d love to hear which modules or features you’ve found most beneficial. Personally, I find the video content especially informative and accessible. Safe flying! Tyghe Richardson Your Airport Manager Auburn Airport City of Auburn, CA (530) 888-8174

Katie Mitchell seated in the AT-6
Airports are a wonderful place to hang out at during the summers. You never know what kind of airplanes will fly in or where they are from. You might even get invited to go for a flight with someone who wants to share that adventure with you. That was the case when David Holloway invited Katie Mitchell along for a flight in the AT-6. Katie works at Full Throttle Aviation as a mechanic and David is a customer of theirs. After a preflight, Katie was strapped in the back seat and given a quick orientation to the controls in the back. Off they went for the ride of a lifetime. I do not know how much time she got but David is a flight instructor so she put that time in her logbook. What a unique entry that will make for the flight examiner to see. Another exciting thing for her in the near future is a final meeting with the FAA to get her Airframe and PowerPlant Rating. Congratulations and good luck Katie. First flights are a wonderful thing. They are the flight that plants the seed for learning to fly. The following have let that seed grow and have moved on to the next level and soloed. James Thornley soloed in a C-172 with Chris Hale as his instructor. Gregory Len and Dustin Allen have not been left behind and soloed in a C-172 with Dwight Stalker as their instructor. In addition to soloing these students, Dwight got Leo Rubia through his Private Pilot License with Carol Zerbe as the pilot examiner (Carol has come all the way down here from Alaska to do check rides). It has been a good month for these folks. Congratulations to all on a job well. Now go and enjoy your new adventure of flight. What is your next adventure in flying this summer? There are some great day trips out there. The Monterey Bay Aquarium, Castle Air Museum along with the California Air Museum at McCellan, the Hiller Helicopter Museum at San Carlos, Columbia State Park at Columbia, and more. There is Gold Beach, Oregon with the mail boats along the Rogue River. Trinity Center for camping or boating. Arcata, Eureka, and Shelter Cove on the California north coast. Those towns have a feel of a New England fishing town. Ashland Oregon, near Mount Shasta, has the ongoing Shakespeare Festival. If you are looking for more a western theme then there is Lone Pine in the south part of the Owens Valley. There is a theater there that only plays the old “B” westerns from the early John Wayne era. Many of the early “B” westerns were filmed in that Area. Pick one of these adventures and have a great time. For those folks looking for check rides in a reasonable time, there is good news. We have finally got the FAA to publish an up-to-date list of examiners for Sacramento area FSDO (Flight Standards District Office). The previous list had fourteen examiners on it with half of them not doing check rides. The current list has only seven examiners on it, one of whom only does gliders. At least now we know who to call now. We are making some progress on getting earlier checkrides, even if it feels like a glacial pace. One last thing I have before I go, the Red Bird simulator is up and running. For anyone looking to build time at a less expensive amount, this is the way to go. You can log time for your private, instrument, and commercial ratings. It is an easy way to save hundreds if not thousands of dollars to get your rating. By flying this simulator at $85 / hour, you also help to fund future scholarships, because any profits from the simulator go to the AAA endowment fund. By the way there is a June special on the Red Bird sim of $75/ hour on the hobbs. Take care for now. Good Night Miss Daisy. The Prop Turner Mike Duncan
