PRESIDENTS MESSAGE
I’m writing this the week before Thanksgiving, which makes me think about all the things I’m grateful for as I look back over the past year. I am thankful for all the fantastic people in AAA who give freely of their time to make our organization so wonderful. I’m thinking of all the folks who will always say "yes" when called upon for help. These are the same people who so often are taking care of the Association’s needs without ever having to be asked month in and month out. I’m grateful to the Board of Directors who keep us on an even keel with their good judgment and wise counsel which have always been essential to the progress of the AAA. I’m grateful to all those who every month find a way to bring a dish to our monthly potluck dinners. We eat like kings every time! I’m especially grateful to our unsung heroes of those suppers: Bonnie, Mona and Yvonne, who every month help set things up so beautifully before the meeting and then stay to clean up the Barnstormer Room. And finally, I’m grateful to all our AAA members for the friendship and good humor they bring to each meeting. They are at the heart of our success. I have enjoyed my term as President of AAA, and I look forward to the new year as we continue to make our beloved KAUN the best little airport anywhere. Happy Thanksgiving, Merry Christmas, and Happy New Year to everyone.

Airport Maintenance On Tuesday, November 12th, the dedicated team from Public Works completed this year’s vital maintenance on the airport runway starting during the early morning hours. Their commitment to ensuring the runway remains in top condition is essential for both the safety and efficiency of air operations. However, these important projects can sometimes disrupt the daily operations of the airport, causing inconvenience for aircrews and passengers alike. To minimize the impact of these maintenance activities on flight schedules, the ground crew begins their work before sunrise. By starting in the quiet hours of the morning, they aim to reduce disturbances during peak flight times. Additionally, this schedule allows the team to finish their tasks by 2:00 PM and reopen the runway by 3:30 pm. This well-planned timeline helps strike a balance between performing necessary repairs and maintaining smooth airport operations, ensuring that both maintenance needs and flight schedules are effectively managed. In addition to the runway work, the team also rehabilitated sections of the drainage system located on the hillside behind the new hangars. While this part of the airport infrastructure may not be glamorous, it is critical to the long-term safety and functionality of the airport. Using both heavy equipment and hand labor, we graded the storm water drainage area to ensure it met the required slope specifications. Once the grading was complete, the crew applied erosion control measures to the freshly disturbed soil, ensuring the work will remain intact for years to come. The collaboration between the Public Works team and airport operations underscores the importance of communication and planning in maintaining the high standards of airport safety and efficiency. This teamwork allows aircrews to continue their vital work with minimal disruption. As always, please feel free to contact me with any questions. The door is always open! Winter is here. Thanksgiving has come and gone. However, it is still a good time to be thankful for all the things that we have and the things we are able to share with others.Christmas is not far behind. Santa Clause is getting ready and the sleigh is finishing its annual. The best and worst time of the year. The best part is lots of parties, food, and celebrations. The worst part is the weight gain that comes with the parties and dinners. On the subject of giving and sharing, the application process of our scholarship will be opening this coming month for those young aspiring pilots. If you want to give a gift to them, this is a good place to start. As a part of that gift, there is an invitation to our Career Day in January. This is the kind of gift that lasts a lifetime. The Auburn Christmas Light Parade is coming up on December 7th. Ben Foss is organizing a float for the parade and would like some volunteers to help. You can contact him at 1-530-305-7721. You can also contact the airport manager Tygh Richardson at 1-530-5554. All help is welcome. While the weather has been marginal this past month, the students keep on flying. Brian Rois-Mendez was able to solo a C-172 with Dwight Stalker as his instructor. Dwight also soloed Arthur Kernacs in the mighty SportStar. Chris Hale was not to be out done and was able to solo two students: both Casey Kleeschulte and Logan Reid were soloed in a C-172 at Auburn airport. Both Chris and Dwight were able to get two students through their Private Pilot License: Tyler Guenter and Zander Holmes, respectively, earned their license with Mark Montague as the Designated Pilot Examiner. Rachel Yoder also earned her Private Pilots License with Mark as the DPE. Christine Koenigsecker was her instructor. Gray Dwelle has reportedly earned his Private License! Gray did his initial training here in Auburn, but has since went off to Colorado State where he finished there this past month. For many of the younger folks who do not complete their training in Auburn, they continue on elsewhere. The biggest thing we do here at Auburn is help them get started and then let them continue on their dreams elsewhere. As I tell everyone that sometimes life gets in the way and the dream is delayed but completed later. That is kind of how life works. Last but not least is Holly Brusa. Holly was able to earn her CFII with David Longo as her instructor and Jim Duvall as the DPE. Congratulations to all on a job well done. You have given yourself one of the best Christmas presents of all. Well that is about all for this month. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all. Good Night Miss Daisy. November was a busy and rewarding month for us here at Mach 5. We enjoyed giving back to the community and have more on the books for December, additionally, we have several student accomplishments despite the cloudy skies and plenty of rain. While the winter weather setting in may not be ideal for VFR flying, now is the perfect time to focus on IFR flying in some actual IMC, written exam and checkride preparation, and planning for the year ahead. Several students achieved milestones in November. Nolan S. and Glenn F. earned their Commercial Multi add-on with Kyden Carpio’s instruction. MEI Erick Gutierrez guided Reese D. to pass his Commercial Multi add-on checkride, as well as our own CFI David Wells! In addition, Kyle F. and Cole C. celebrated their first solo flights, both with support from Brett Bickerstaff. Alongside these student accomplishments, our testing center hosted nearly 60 written exam testers in November, and December looks to be just as busy. If you’re ready to schedule your exam, don’t hesitate to book through the PSI website or give us a call with any questions; we’re happy to help. As always, Mach 5 holds community involvement in strong regard, and November was no different. We proudly donated to and participated in the EAA Young Eagles event, where Shayden Eagleheart took up a total of five kids in our Archer N8321M. While this event was the final Young Eagles gathering for the year, we’re already looking forward to the next one in Spring 2025. We also donated an Introductory Flight to the Global Fellowship Silent Auction, happening on December 5th at Missions Coffee. Lastly, we’re excited to join other Airport businesses in sponsoring the Auburn Aviation Association in the Festival of Lights Parade taking place on December 7th. We hope to see you there! Keeping in line with our goal to expand and improve our fleet, December looks promising for some new additions, so keep an eye out for updates by visiting our website or following us on social media @Mach5Aviation. Blue skies and a happy December, we’ll see you next year!
