Principal's Message
It’s hard to believe that Winter Break is just around the corner! It remains our goal to provide students with a safe, caring, and welcoming community that helps students grow as individuals while being actively engaged in learning opportunities that continue to promote the Core Competencies in the B.C. Curriculum (https://curriculum.gov.bc.ca/competencies). I want to thank our Leadership class for organizing Halloween activities, our Remembrance Day assembly, and for helping with our annual Foodbank Fundraiser. I would also like to thank our Fall coaches for volunteering their time and our staff in general for their efforts in creating a school culture that promotes our school mission of fostering a culture of belonging, mastery, independence, and generosity while aiming to build an empowered and growth-minded learning community. We have a short but busy month of December ahead of us with a number of activities including our annual Food Bank Fundraiser, and holiday theme week. I wish you all a healthy December and holiday season! Take care and stay well! ~ Clint Dolgopol

Lest We Forget Honoring Veterans on Remembrance Day Remembrance Day Written by students: Hailey Pasula and Oliver Parsons On November 8th, Selkirk staff and students gathered in the gymnasium for our Remembrance Day assembly. This day fosters a sense of community as people come together to honor and remember those who served to protect our country. It reinforces the idea that we are all part of a larger society that values sacrifice and service. This assembly lasted about an hour, and we had quite a few members of the community attend our service. Scott McInnis, Randy Marchi, Lorne McKinnin, guest veterans Kyle Dalum with his service dog Bob, Roy Ruiters with his service dog Corra, and Ccpl. Dawson Meester. The assembly started with our local pipe band entrance, which gives me goosebumps every time, followed by the land acknowledgement by Seth Strauss and Mr. Heyde’s band students playing Oh Canada. For our student population, Bodi Kirkby, a grade 12 student, gave a noticeably clear, impressive speech about our evolution connected to Remembrance Day. Graeson Christie, a grade 11 student, read the famous poem "In Flanders Fields", and Imogen Cvetko-Lueger, a grade 11 student, read an indigenous perspective within the war, written by Evyn Phillips. There was a lot of respect being held before, during and after the assembly. We were proud to be part of the Selkirk community. Mr. Heyde also had his very talented Choir students perform “Danny Boy” and “Let It Be.” Afterwards, we got an exclusive interview with Kyle Dalum. When asked how he commemorates Remembrance Day, he responded with “I'm the man on the microphone.” He then also spoke about “trying to engage in camaraderie, spending time with other veterans, and trying to be the best example I can be”. When asked what message he would like to convey to the younger generations about the significance of this day he replied with, “significance or Remembrance Day would be that it's a window for younger people to see what the cost of other people's mistakes in the past have been”
Belonging
Ms. Perry's English First People's 10 class has been walking to McKim weekly to collaborate with a grade 4/5 class. They have been using their leadership skills and knowledge of story elements and design process to help their "little buddies" create their own children's story books.
Food Bank Fundraiser Our annual Food Bank Fundraiser starts December 2nd! Not only does this help out our local food bank but people have a chance to win up to $1000!! Students make us proud every year with their efforts on this fundraiser. If every student sells even one books of tickets ($20) it makes for a successful event. Please note that ALL tickets (sold or unsold) need to be back to the office by December 18. Draw date is December 20.
Generosity
Big thank you to Henry Heigh who took on the task of assembling our new Aerospring Grow Tower in the Library Learning Commons. We will be growing herbs this winter to support the various foods programs at Selkirk.
This month Mr. Heyde's and Ms. Pavan's Career-Life Education 10 classes toured the programs at the College of the Rockies. Students got to see and hear about first-hand all the opportunities available at the Cranbrook campus! Thanks the COTR for hosting the students.
Winter Concert Please join us at the McKim theatre on December 18 at 7pm for our Selkirk Christmas Concert. Admission by donation to Music Program Everyone welcome!
At Selkirk, we follow a progressive discipline policy and use the following themes in conveying our expectations to students.
In November, Selkirk's Indigenous Education team organized a fantastic opportunity for students to discover programs available at various universities. We proudly hosted representatives from the University of Northern British Columbia, Thompson Rivers University, the University of Victoria, and Simon Fraser University. Students engaged with each institution to learn about pathways to higher education and what unique offerings these universities provide. It was an inspiring event that encouraged our students to consider their futures and the diverse educational opportunities that await them!

Snow in Kimberley!! Written by: Philip Jennings and Mason Lawrence Skiing in Kimberley Photo by Kimberley alpine resort Friday Nov 15th, 2024 Are you ready for Kimberley’s winter this year? With the ski season starting and new school sports starting back up as well, get ready while we talk about this small town's upcoming winter and exciting events to come! Kimberley Alpine Resort has announced their opening for December 15th this season. To celebrate the start of this winter Stemwinder bar and grill is hosted “one heck of a party” on Friday, November 22nd, With the efforts of the staff preparing the hill throughout summer Kimberley is looking forward to a great ski season. Currently this month Kimberley has gotten 21.6 cm (about 8.5 in) of snow so people should get their winter tires on and prepare for the roads this winter and the chilly days that are about to come. Kimberley is predicted to have around 100cm (about 3.28 ft) of snow before February. Kimberley has many exciting events this upcoming winter like NorthStar Holiday Market at the Kimberley Conference Centre on December 7th and the Kimberley skating club's just dance event on Saturday November 23rd. There are also many more events to liven up this winter in Kimberley. Platzl Light Up One recent event in Kimberley was the Platzl light up. Many families went to the platzl on Friday, November 15th to watch as Kimberley lit up their town with numerous lights and decorations for all to see this holiday season. New Arrivals to Kimberley This year Selkirk has gained a top chemistry teacher in Mr. Mendez. Mr. Mendez moved from Victoria in August and he had only lived in a colder place once before and the place was Prince George, so we thought we would ask him what he’s looking forward to this winter. The first thing Mr. Mendez talked about was how excited he was to try skiing again. He said that he has been skiing maybe a few times in his life and those were a long time ago, so he is very excited to try out the hill. When we asked what Mr. Mendez was worried about for the winter, he said it was winter driving. Moving from the mild winters on the coast I'm sure it will be a big difference in conditions and will take some getting used to. We wish Mr. Mendez a fun second ever skiing season and good luck on the winter roads! All things considered Kimberley is stacking up to have a great white winter!

RMISP international students and staff are keeping busy as always! This month students visited the Kimberley Curling Club for a fantastic introduction to the sport of curling. With all the fresh snow, students are gearing up for the ski season and looking ahead to our program trip to Fernie Alpine Resort in December. Program staff are busy processing lots of new student applications and building our roster of host families for next school year. Please visit www.rminternational.ca/homestay2 to learn more about hosting, fill out an application, or refer a friend. Former Selkirk student, Anna from Norway (2018-19), returned to Kimberley for a visit in November. It’s so nice to see that the connections made in Canada can endure for so many years! Finally, any Canadian students interested in participating in RMISP’s French Exchange program in 2025, should contact Kathleen Hadford at kathleen.hadford@sd6.bc.ca. The application deadline is December 6.
