100 YEARS OF RANCH EXPERTISE
for considering Lazy A Ranch
thank you
Chulu Borans started with a nucleus of 20 cows purchased from Grasmere Stud in 1997. We took over the entire Grasmere stud the following year. We have gradually built up the herd over decades to what it is today. The strong Grasmere-Chulu genetic lines are predominant, further reinforced and developed by semen, embryos, and live animals purchased locally and imported from Kenya, Tanzania and South Africa. From 2008 to 2012 we ran large embryo transfer programs. We flushed embryos from our nucleus herd of superior females and used all available suitable recipient cows. This resulted in over 250 high-quality embryo calves being born and these now form the solid backbone of the stud today. In four years, we made fifteen years of remarkable genetic progress. Over the same period, we exported embryos to Namibia and South Africa with the goal of establishing a pool of Chulu Boran genetics to facilitate the exchange of genetics within the region. Our South African partners in Chulu Borans South Africa are Francois and Rene Smit of Fonteine Borans. Our Namibian partner in Chulu Borans Namibia is Heiko Hennes of Omakwara Boran Stud.

Chulu borans zambia Breeding Excellence in Boran Cattle
Chulu Borans Zambia is a family-owned cattle stud, managed by Craig, Sally, and Drew & Calo Shiel. Our operations are rooted in Chingola, Copperbelt Province. Since acquiring the renowned Grasmere Boran herd in 2000, originally imported from Kenya in 1947, we have dedicated ourselves to breeding high-quality Boran cattle. Our focus is on producing beef that is both efficient and economical under Zambian conditions, making us the largest registered and most genetically diverse Boran herd in the country.
Breeding Policies
Our breeding policies emphasise performance balanced with structural soundness. There are strict selection criteria for fertility, milk production and growth. The result is a uniform herd of medium framed Zambian Borans adapted to the harsh conditions in central Africa. Inbreeding is well managed, assisted by a policy of introducing new genetics continuously. Currently there are over twelve bloodlines in the herd. Crossing these lines maximises hybrid vigour, resulting in stronger and healthier offspring. All return bull buyers can select a bull which is not related to daughters of their previous Chulu bull.
Grass is a focal point in our operations. Improved pasture planing programs have doubled the stocking capacity on our Chingola farms. The pastures species selected include Rhodes & Star, and eleven varieties of Panicums & Brachiarias.
Grass A Serious Focal Point
Origin of the Boran
The Boran developed in eastern Africa with the main centre being the Borana plateau in southern Ethiopia and became the dominant cattle breed of eastern Africa. In Kenya commercial Boran breeders have bred the “Improved Boran” since the early 1900’s. The breed has disseminated into many other countries in the last 70 years. As far as can be determined this is the only breed in the world to have this specific combination of genes. The Boran has been a pure breed for 1300 years. The importance of this is that the Boran will have much stronger hybrid vigour than modern compound breeds in commercial crossbreeding programs. While Boran breeders have greatly improved the beef conformation of their animals, they have never lost sight of the important qualities of the indigenous Boran. Genetic Traits Each genetic component of the Boran confers special characteristics to the breed: The Bos indicus component results in resistance to disease, and tolerance to ticks, heat and drought. The European Bos Taurus component confers better beef attributes and width to the Boran. The African Bos Taurus component contributes incredible further hardiness, ability to digest poor quality grasses, and disease resistance, especially to trypanosomes (sleeping sickness) and theileriosis (East Coast Fever), making Boran cattle rearing possible in areas where other breeds cannot survive.

Market Overview
Steps for a Foreigner to Purchase an Existing Ranch in Zambia 1. Understand Land Ownership Laws All land in Zambia is vested in the President and held in trust for the people. Private ownership doesn’t exist in the freehold sense — only leasehold rights (usually 99 years). Foreigners cannot directly own land unless: It is under a Zambian-registered company with majority Zambian ownership. The land is in an Investment Project approved by the Zambia Development Agency (ZDA). 2. Establish a Zambian Company (Recommended Path) You can legally acquire leasehold land if you: Register a local company with the Patents and Companies Registration Agency (PACRA). Have majority Zambian shareholding (51% or more). Alternatively, partner with a Zambian national or entity. Appoint directors and obtain a Tax Identification Number (TPIN) from the Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA). Note: Some foreign investors use nominee structures or local partnerships to meet legal requirements. 3. The Closing Process We have attorneys that are well versed in the transfer of property and leases in Zambia and they will ensure that all necessary steps are taken to assure that all property and leases transfer without encumbrances, disputes, or unpaid taxes.
The Purchase process
4. Get ZDA Investment License (Optional but Beneficial) If your ranch is part of a larger agricultural investment: Apply for anInvestment License via the Zambia Development Agency (ZDA). Benefits include: Tax incentives Access to land via the government Easier work/residence permits 5. Engage a Lawyer for Contract & Transfer We will draft a Sale Agreement and ensure all parties sign. The buyer's lawyer applies for consent to assign the lease (transfer the land title) from the Ministry of Lands. Pay applicable fees: Property Transfer Tax (PTT)– 5% of property value. Registration fees. 6. Apply for Residency/Work Permit If you plan to live and work on the ranch, apply for: Investor Permit (via Department of Immigration) Alternatively, a Residence Permit or Employment Permit based on your role. 7.Complete Title Transfer Upon Ministry approval, your lease title (or that of your company) is updated to reflect new ownership.
