Kiwanis Club of Arlington
December 15, 2021
Kiwanis Club of Arlington members are always seeking ways to create an impact in their community. One of our favorite holiday traditions is volunteering for the Salvation Army Bell Ringing Kettle Fundraiser. On December 4th and December 11th of 2021, our volunteers prepared to face Texas's newly found chilly weather in search of collecting donations and spreading cheer. The Salvation Army is well known for its contributions to our community. Be it providing shelter to the homeless, feeding the food insecure, or gifting items to impoverished children Salvation Army knows how to make quite a positive impact. We take pride in being able to assist them with their mission this holiday season. If you wish to make a personal contribution, please contact your local Salvation Army.

Kay Lancaster
Kay Lancaster is one of KCA's most cherished members. She was born in Arlington, TX on February 24th, 1952 to parents Dexter and Dorthy Betts. She is now happily married to Gary Lancaster and is a proud mother and grandmother. She has been a proud member of the Kiwanis Club of Arlington for over 15 years. Besides being a member of KCA, Kay has done a lot of volunteer work outside the club, this includes Prison Ministry, providing aid to those experiencing homelessness, being a School Mentor, and being a part of the AWARE Foundation. Aside from volunteerism, Kay has many accomplishments under her belt. She has graduated from Arlington High School, Texas Wesleyan University, North Texas University, and Brite Divinity School. She is also a retired Public School Administrator and is an Associate Pastor at First United Methodist Arlington. One of Kay's hopes for the future is that people will continue to make contributions to the children of our community.

Meet a Kiwanian
The pandemic threw a wrench in the plans of many nonprofit organizations in 2020. In turn, this prompted a hiatus of many of our in-person activities. Due to the high risk of contagion for the elderly and the very young, our BUG program was put on pause. This was done to ensure the safety of our members as well as that of the children at participating schools. After the many exciting developments with vaccinations, booster shots, and safety protocols, we are excited to announce that the Bringing Up Grades program will no longer be on hiatus. As of January 2022, our program will resume at South Davis and Speer Elementary. Our BUG program encourages children to improve their academic standing through recognition of their efforts. Each student that brings up their grade in at least one subject gets a BUG pencil, magnet, ruler, or zipper pull presented in front of their classmates. Those that make the A & B Honor Roll also get a certificate signed by the school Principal & Kiwanis and a chance (by drawing) to win a bicycle awarded by Kiwanis. We are elated to be able to once again encourage children to do their best.

School Supply Squad
School Supply Squad is well underway this school year, supplying school supplies to disadvantaged students who cannot afford to purchase their own supplies. With the support of volunteers Jeremy, Larry, Russ, Dave Turney, Don Henderson, and Laura, and volunteers from Trinity UMC, and Kiwanis monetary backing, the School Supply Squad has delivered nearly 8,000 items to about 45 schools by early December. The 8,000 items range in cost from pencils to backpacks and school names from Atherton to Williams and are as many items as we have supplied in several former full school years. The 45 schools contacted and supplied so far have increased from the 30 elementary schools we traditionally called on in previous years. This year also includes 7 Title I Jr. High schools, 12 Mansfield ISD Title I schools (physically located in Arlington), and 44 Title I Arlington elementary schools. We still have about 10 schools not yet reached, and will approach those in early 2022 in an attempt to reach all Title I school students in Arlington elementary and Jr. High schools. Several school items need to be replenished, and Dollar Days and Bags N-Bulk are keeping our cost very near to summer sale prices. Jim Burgess can now track inventory this year, and plan a physical inventory in late December to compare to volunteer reported deliveries. If you wish to become involved with this outreach program, contact the program coordinator, Jim Burgess, at Burgess612@sbcglobal.net.
