Kiwanians Continue Their Mission as Spring Time arrives
Hello to all of our wonderful Texas and Oklahoma Kiwanis members! Historically, each year we have a summer District Convention which usually falls on the first weekend of August and allows our membership opportunities to get together and celebrate our achievements. Last year, we had to change our plans and cancel an in-person convention and, instead, have a "virtual" convention with live presentations via our district Facebook page. Unfortunately, it appears we will have to do the same thing this year for the Edmond, Oklahoma, convention. I hate to announce a cancellation but we're still having a major reluctance on the part of our membership, especially our older members, to get together again in person so soon after the vaccinations have started. We're not the only Kiwanis district to cancel and our own International Convention has been cancelled this year as well. So, we're going to do another virtual convention this year. The board has met and approved this plan. We will now share convention activities on 2 concurrent Saturdays during the first 2 weekends in August and allow the events to be broadcast to the entire district via the district Facebook page. We plan to have some fun and interesting educational events as well as highlighting our SLP programs, have great guest speakers, and visit with clubs around the district and share their news "live" and online. We will have some fun with this. We will have some news shortly on some future get-togethers that are being planned right now, and we should be able to tell you more about these within the next few weeks. Best regards, Marshall Kregel Texas Oklahoma District Marketing Director

From the Governor
reetings fellow Kiwanians of the Mighty T-O, We are just over halfway through our Kiwanis year. With spring here and people getting out and wanting activity, now is the time to ask people to join Kiwanis to support the community and the youth. As you know there is something for everyone in Kiwanis. We support youth in the community, but we do so much more. If you read through Ki-Notes you will see how the diversity of our projects. Members can do as much or little as they feel comfortable. They can be involved in fundraising, be a local member, or go all the way to the international board. I continue to appreciate the work the clubs are doing to keep their roles clear. If you are finding your club struggling, we have over 22 club coaches across the district that are willing to help. Each region also has a Past Governor that has volunteered to help clubs and divisions in any way possible. Take advantage of these people’s experiences and increase your club’s membership and your support to the youth and local community. As I write this we have recruited 270 new members for the year with a net gain of 56 members, which indicates clubs are keeping their membership accounting up to date. Using these numbers, I know we have lost 214 members from our clubs since the start of the year, which means we can look for trends to identify clubs in trouble. If you need help, ask your Lt. Governor, Trustee, or anyone in the district because we are here to help. As vaccines have become more available more of our clubs have been meeting in person and taking precautions. I just want to remind you, if you want to have a hybrid or Zoom meeting, your division Lt. Governor is authorized to have a full version of Zoom paid for by the district. Some of the clubs have been using Zoom as a tool to increase membership because it allows people to easily attend meetings and participate. Reach out to get speakers from around the world to join your meeting on Zoom to enhance the club experience. The Key Clubs are very good with this technology and are willing to help. I have enjoyed our Texas Oklahoma District Governor’s Zoom Socials. It gives me the opportunity to meet people from around the district and hear their thoughts and concerns. Keep a close watch for the next date. I am sad to report that we will not be able to host a full T-O District Convention in Edmond, Oklahoma this year. We reached out to members across the district and the consensus is that it may not be safe enough for our members to meet in person. We are going to plan an event that will be live-streamed for the district to view and we have some great ideas for speakers, entertainment, and forums. Please stay aware of the specific information as we move forward. Please feel free to send me Zoom invitations to a club meeting, division council meetings, or other activities you want me to see. If you want me to speak to your club for a couple of minutes, let me know in the invitation and I will RSVP, otherwise, I will just pop into your meeting when I can to enjoy your company. Attending meetings gives me ideas, which is why I recommend using Zoom for an opportunity to inter-club. As the ability to travel opened more, let me know about your activities and I can try to schedule a quick trip to participate. I am proud of the Might T-O accomplishments as we push through these odd times. We have shown that we can think outside the box and adapt to continue to provide our vital services to youth and communities! Please contact me if you need anything and thank you all for your service. Paul Heinz Governor Texas/Oklahoma District of Kiwanis International (405)246-5972 #KidsNeedKiwanis

LATEST COVID-19 (CORONAVIRUS) NEWS
The first Kiwanis Club in what is now the Texas-Oklahoma District, was officially completed February 10, 1917, at Dallas, Texas, with a membership of 200. Due to the increasing number of clubs across the country members realized the need of setting up the District organization. In October 1918, the Dallas Club selected one of its members to serve as interim Governor of the Texas-Oklahoma District until an organization conference could be arranged. The first meeting was in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and on February 10, 1919, the Texas-Oklahoma District was organized.

The Texas Oklahoma Kiwanis District is no longer accepting coloring book designs at the moment. All the designs submitted to the district, since the beginning of the contest, have been sorted and final chosen designs will be awarded accordingly. The district is also experimenting with putting together coloring books that can be used by other Kiwanis Districts. This will aid our outreach to children and parents in coming years.
Coloring Book Contest
A new district project created by Marshall Kregel, TX OK Kiwanis District Marketing Chair 2020-2021.
The Texas Oklahoma District began its coloring book adventure over this summer. The district successfully printed its first coloring book issue in August 2020. The first issue print was sold out within hours as it was presented for the first time during our district convention. Since then the district has ordered more copies and continues to sell them via the district's online store. The district has been able to publish 3 different coloring book versions, one of which idetails a specific K-Kids Service project for Kiwanis Clubs.
What is going on with this project?
What should we expect next?
The latest issue that has been published is our Issue 3 Coloring Book. Issue number 4 is currently in the works and will feature fun activities for children.

We have recieved over hundreds of designs for our coloring book project. We are extremely grateful for the immense participation by our beloved Key Clubbers. Without their participation we would not have been able to complete this project. Through their aid we were able to showcase what Kiwanis is all about. This being said, we have reviewed all of the design submissions and have selected our final coloring book winners. The designs chosen from this final pool of winners will be featured in our coloring and activity book Issue 4 as well as future issues. The winners are as follows:

ABILENE, Texas – Members of the Kiwanis Club of Abilene, for the third consecutive year, conducted the Big Country Regional Spelling Bee on Feb. 27, 2021. Twenty-two students in grades 5 through 8 from schools in and around Abilene participated in the Bee held at the historic Paramount Theatre. Seventh-grader Jonah Bryant of Craig Middle School in Abilene came out the victor. The winning word was “jitney,” meaning an unlicensed taxicab or its slang for nickel. Jonah advances to the Scripps National Spelling Bee. This year the National Bee will be a combination of virtual and in-person competition. The final 10-12 students from the virtual competitions will compete at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex at Walt Disney World Resort, near Orlando, Fla., on July 8th, Rounds of the National Bee will be broadcast nationwide. Approximately two dozen members of the Kiwanis Club volunteered for a variety of duties at the bee, ranging from greeting to registering spellers and from ushering to sanitizing handrails on staircases. COVID precautions were a top priority of the club. The Kiwanis Club of Abilene is celebrating its 100th year of serving the children and community of Abilene, the Big Country, the United States, and around the World.
The pandemic may have caused a halt of normalcy, but it can never stop Kiwanians.

University Kiwanis Club of Wichita Falls Fun at the park SUBMITTED BY John Rhoads
With the dynamic President Mary Rhoads leading the charge, the University Kiwanis Club of Wichita Falls has provided for the installation of new and inclusive playground equipment for children ages 2 through 5 at the city-owned (but aptly named) University Kiwanis Park on Southwest Parkway in the southwest part of the city. University Kiwanis Park is used by approximately 40,000 people annually. It is home to four baseball fields, a prairie dog enclosure, and a huge kite flying area for the public to enjoy. The new playground addition was formally dedicated on March 27, 2021. The addition has dramatically increased the park’s visitation rate. Spring is here, the COVID-19 pandemic is waning; the addition of the new playground could not have come at a more propitious time. The new playground is adjacent to the existing playground for older children (an earlier project funded by University Kiwanis Club efforts) so parents will be able to keep close watch over their children simultaneously in both areas. The new area is surrounded by a wide concrete walking trail for parents to stroll or push buggies as their tikes “let off a little steam”. The sidewalk is on grade with the wood-fiber surface for the new playground making ingress and egress to the playground easy. The area will soon have four covered benches with screens for the convenience and comfort of parents and grandparents. The “zip” line addition included with the new playground facilities seems to be a very big hit with the kids. The prairie dog exhibit just to the south of the playground area remains a great draw to the 60-acre park. The installed playground equipment was supplied by Landscape Structures, a partner with the Kiwanis International organization and manufacturer of industry-leading commercial playground equipment. The site plan and drawings were graciously prepared by the Club’s retired professional engineer Mr. Dennis Probst. The equipment was professionally installed by Whirlix Design, Incorporated, from Richardson, Texas. The City of Wichita Falls provided guidance, encouragement, and incredible assistance in the placement and installation of the new playground. A special thanks are due to Parks Superintendent Terry Points. The park is now the only playground in the Wichita Falls Parks system specifically designed for children ages 2 through 5. The Club’s Foundation funded $100,000 of the costs for the project and solicited community foundations, corporations, and individuals for the additional $100,000 needed for this project. Members of the University Kiwanis Club gave generously of their own time and treasure to bring the project to fruition along with major donations from WSC, the Kadane Foundation, the Bryant-Edwards Foundation, the Fain Foundation, the WFACF Grant Endowment Fund-WFACF, the J. S. Bridwell Foundation, Service Master of Wichita Falls, and the Sauder Family. Of course, the entire project would have been impossible without the sustained and tireless efforts of the University Kiwanis Club and its magnificent members, past and present, since the club’s inception in 1956. Sadly, the Club’s annual Pancake Festival and major fundraiser had to be cancelled this year due to the pandemic. Instead of serving 10,000 people their “world-famous” pancakes from 6 AM to 6 PM on the last Saturday in January of this year, the Club’s Pancake Chairman for the 65th Annual event, Mr. Kerry Graham, opted to keep the Festival tradition and streak alive by offering a Do-It-Yourself (DIY) Pancake Festival. The Club sold pancake mix and frozen sausage via online sales with a customer drive-through pickup of the DIY materials coinciding with the new playground dedication on March 27. The Club had magnificent assistance at the park for this DIY event from members of three supported Key Clubs (Wichita Falls High School, Hirschi High School, and Rider High School) and an overwhelming number of young and energetic Air Force personnel from the Club’s Adopted Squadron at Sheppard Air Force Base, the 361st Training Squadron. To make for an even more “K-Colored” Day, the annual city-wide Easter Egg Hunt (heavily supported by the University Kiwanis Club) was also held on March 27 at the park. The annual “Egg Hunt” was likewise modified to a drive-through event because of concerns about the virus. The Club operates the concession stand at University Kiwanis Park during the baseball season each year and all profits are donated to the city for maintenance and upgrades to the Park.

A Message to members Submitted by Kelly Poland
Hello! Key Club is a vital part of Kiwanis. Key Club can be the future of Kiwanis, but it will take our current Kiwanis membership reaching out to Key Clubs, interacting with them beyond possible financial support. Kenyon Black and I, as Key Club administrators, have made it a priority to encourage Key Club members to continue their K-Family membership, involvement, and interaction with Kiwanians. One way we actively promote this is to speak at Kiwanis Clubs and Division Council Meetings to report on Key Club happenings. We would love to be a speaker at your next meeting! Due to distance and COVID, we prefer to join via Zoom or other conference software/methods, but if we are close to your area, we will be happy to speak in person. Contact Kenyon Black at kblack6500@yahoo.com or Kelly Poland at kelly.poland@yahoo.com if your club is interested in learning more about Key Club. HERE is a link to a "trailer" our Key Club District Board wrote, shot, edited, and distributed. Lastly, If you would like to see Key Club in action as we celebrate the District's clubs and their success during this difficult year, please register (at no cost) for our Annual District Convention by clicking HERE. You will receive a Zoom link and a copy of the agenda a few days prior to the April 17 Convention. For more information regarding our annual conference, you can click HERE. We hope to see you there! It will not be the same as years past, but don’t discount the benefits of attending this year’s Kiwanis International gathering in Salt Lake City! Education and ideas will abound, and the week will be full of what friends call good Kiwanis vibes and good juju. We will have the opportunity to meet people from across the United States and to network with like-minded Kiwanians. Workshops will be offered to address membership, service, fundraising, and more. We’ll finally get to hear from Captain Sully, and we’ll get to enjoy musical entertainment provided by Larry Gatlin and Lorrie Morgan. The International Council will be determining the winners of this year’s election, but you can still read up on the candidates at https://www.kiwanis.org/salt-lake-city-2021/elections. Off the record info for our young professionals: the “next generation” membership subcommittee is plotting a YP gathering in Salt Lake City for younger members to network with one another. More information will become available as the conference nears. Also pending is an in-person district meetup. Even if our T-O delegation is small, it would be a pleasure to gather (six feet apart) at some point during the training. If you plan to attend virtually, whether participating in the full conference or simply tuning in for the International Council on Saturday, consider hosting a (safe) watch party for your club or division. Build a bit of that good Kiwanis excitement by making an event out of this remote learning opportunity. Information and registration for both events are posted at https://www.kiwanis.org/salt-lake-city-2021. Registration closes on May 25, 2021.

Kiwanis Members from the NEDC Kiwanis Club assisted with disaster relief efforts after Texas Snowmageddon 2021. NEDC Kiwanis partnered with Five Loaves Food Pantry in Sachse where Kiwanis member Audrey Wallace is Director. Five Loaves services Garland, Sachse, Rowlett and surrounding areas. Lakisha Culpepper, community liaison with Garland ISD Family and Engagement Dept. and also a club member was instrumental in gathering information on what was needed for the GISD families. NEDC received a grant from the Kiwanis International Children’s Fund to assist these families. 4 large apartment complexes and several trailer parks in the area were without power and then without water for up to 3 weeks. Club members assembled and donated clean-up buckets, hygiene bags, school supplies, water, and much-needed food. Club Members assembled 100 cleaning buckets for GISD and Five Loaves. In addition they provided 150 Hygiene bags for families. Along with these efforts, cases of breakfast foods, soups, canned meats, and beans were donated to stock pantry shelves.
Corporate Membership Submitted by Marshall Kregel
In support of the Corporate Membership Program: Using the New Member, Partner, and Sponsor Decals to Display at Participating Businesses Some clubs in our district thrive on Corporate Memberships to fill their club membership roster. Clubs like the Brownwood Kiwanis Club in north-central Texas have gotten more than 10 New Corporate Members since January 1, 2021. What is a Corporate Member? A corporate membership allows your club to add a local company, business, or non-profit as a supporter of your club. Next to the member’s name you simply check corporate member. Their company or organization, rather than the individual, pays the new member fees and, potentially, the monthly dues. The company names an employee to attend your meetings. This employee is a member of your club just like any other member. They even can hold office and vote! Should that individual leave the company they are always welcome to join your club however, the corporate membership is transferred at no cost to another employee by your club secretary. While other employees are welcome to assist at fundraisers and service projects only one membership per paid corporate member. Companies that want to be good corporate citizens find this membership appealing because they recognize the value of affiliation with a well-respected service organization like Kiwanis. An added plus: The corporate member represents company interests within the club and develops a relationship between the company, Kiwanis, and other community groups. An excellent example is a non-profit that wishes to use Kiwanis family members as volunteers. Having a seat at the table in your Kiwanis meetings helps to ensure their needs are known. The Texas Oklahoma Marketing Team has created a series of large (4 inch) decals with either “Member”, “Sponsor”, or “Partner” printed under the Kiwanis K emblem. The Member decal could be given to any regular or corporate member that has a business or storefront or a glass window to display the decal. If you have a club partner or someone who trades services with the club but is not actually a member, then the Partner decal would be right for them. If you have an organization or individual that donates funds to the club but can’t arrange a personal membership, then perhaps the Sponsor decal would be great for them to have. The decals peel off the paper and the sticky side is on the FRONT of the decal so it will be applied on the inside of the glass door or window rather than the outside. It could be applied to the inside of a back window of a car or truck but it is a bit large at 4” across. Now, the district has arranged to send out a package of 6 decals (2 of each type), membership forms, corporate membership brochures, training brochures, and a small booklet on Engaging Potential Members to clubs in the district. This envelope of goodies is FREE to each club in the district simply by requesting it via an email to Marshall Kregel, Marketing Director, at mkregel@hotmail.com. Send your mailing address in the email! I may not have it in my directory. If you want additional decals, they come in groups of 6 for 5.00/group and you can pick and choose which decals you want. You can send a check to the Texas Oklahoma District, 3010 W. Park Row Dr, Suite 100 Pantego, TX. 76013, and just put “decals” in the note line on the check. The address will also be the return address on the envelope that you get with the order. If you have questions or need assistance, you can contact either Marshall Kregel, Marketing, at mkregel@hotmail.com or Susan Hennum, Membership, at Susan.Hennum@hotmail.com. We ordered 1500 of these decals and they are getting popular quickly!! Let’s put one of these on every business window in every town in the district. Each club is entitled to a free packet of decals (6) upfront. The funds come from the Marketing account. Additional decals are 5.00 dollars for 6 more decals. 10 dollars for 12 more decals, etc. I’ll use the extra funds to purchase more decals. I have a feeling these are going to be handed out like crazy for a while. Best regards, Marshall Kregel Marketing Director 4/4/2021

All clubs need to improve the way we communicate with the public. We must self-promote our clubs and events which will help with recruitment. KI has made available to all clubs, at no cost, a customized club logo. See our logo to the left. https://www.kiwanis.org/clubs/member-resources/logos/custom-logo-requests Instead of the traditional KI logo, we utilize our custom logo on letterheads, business cards, posters, and banners to brand all our events and promote our club. A subtle and quiet method to communicate that your club is responsible or co-participant with the event(s) you’re supporting. Logos are provided in various styles in .JPG, .PNG and .EPS file formats.

It is our sharing of stories that will follow us throughout our time. I also wanted to add a note about our "In Loving Memory" section. If you find that your loved one is not listed there when they should be, please notify me at txokkiwanis@gmail.com. The list of names that I work with is pulled from the Kiwanis One database. Due to delayed deceased member updates it can result in names not being on my list. Likewise, if you wish to submit an obituary for your loved one I would be more than happy to add it in our issue.
