Students take part in a 3-day winter skills trip – through the Selkirk Outdoor Education, Leadership and Careers Course! They practiced their Avalanche Safety Training skills, developed navigation and terrain reading skills, worked together to build their accommodation in the snow, and cooked together – boiling water from snow. Thank you to our leadership team, Kevin, Bruce, Chris and Ms. Meens.

Principal's Message
Congratulations to all students for their efforts in finishing first semester courses and thank you to all staff for their work in getting gr. 10-12 students prepared for semester one final assessments. December and January were busy months with a number of activities including our holiday season theme week and activities, grad photos, and end of semester course wrap-up for senior students. We were sad to say goodbye to a few international students at the end of the semester. We will miss these students but are happy to welcome a few new students to Selkirk for the second half of the year. February will be a busy month with activities such as our Grad Flower Basket Fundraiser, Course Selection for Grade 10-12 students, Pink Shirt Day and our Valentine's Dance. A reminder for parents to contact your child’s teacher(s) anytime during the semester should you wish an update on his/her academic progress. Here’s to a great start to the second half of the year! ~ Clint Dolgopol

Students from Mrs. Pasiechnyk’s and Mrs. Perry’s English First Peoples 10 classes attended a field trip to Aqam. They toured the St. Eugene Mission Residential school and learned from community members and elders. It was a moving and eye-opening experience for everyone and they were grateful for the chance to visit this important place.
Students from Mrs. Pasiechnyk and Mr. Loftsgard’s Grade 8 classes visited Lindsay Park to develop relationships with students from Kindergarten to Grade 3. They will be heading back a few times over the next few months to further develop their leadership skills and work on literacy projects with these younger students.

Selkirk Sr. Basketball Written by: Madden Beaton and Carmyn Chintu As the semester comes to a close our basketball teams are just starting to compete and showing their ferocity with the latest tournament results. The senior girls team came first in our home tournament and won the finals match with an astonishing score of 60-16 against Golden, while the senior boys team fought hard against the Sparwood Spartans only coming 3 points short of winning. There were a few players who stood out in these games: Levi Canning, with his drives to the net making it hard to defend, as well as Dryden Craig who knocked down 3 3-pointers in the final game. The girls’ player who stood out like no other was Imogen C.L., who got an amazing 3 steals during the fourth period against Golden. We have high hopes of our basketball teams while the season comes to the midway and can’t wait to see how the rest of the season plays out.
Storm Cycle: Choose to Reuse Written by: Elliott Bailey During the week of January 14th -17th Selkirk Secondary had a fun and helpful event for students to give away items that they don't use anymore to be reused and or repurposed by other students. The way this event worked was students and staff could bring in items that weren't being used anymore and place them on the designated tables by the office. At these tables there are different categories for various items like games, toys, or clothing. If you see something of interest to you or that you can put to use, you can take it home! The purpose of this event is to re-purpose items that can’t be recycled in the environment and would just go to waste if thrown out as well as environmental sustainability and generosity in our community. From posters hung around the school there were various facts about consumer waste, especially clothing. From a comment by Seth, he says “The average lifespan of clothing depends on the fabrics used to create them and the skills of the creator. If it is a high-quality piece, it can be used for many years and less quality ones can last 2-4 years.” After one person's uses an item, it doesn't mean it can't be used again. That's why this event was created. Taylor said “In Canada, approximately 81 pounds of textiles per person find their way to landfills each year creating a staggering environmental footprint. Just the fashion industry alone is responsible for 2-8% of the world's carbon emissions.” That needs to be changed. Selkirk may have a small impact on the world but if we can even make a small difference that may impact others to try as well, so always remember... Choose to reuse

CLC Presentations As part of the BC curriculum, all Grade 12 students are required to complete a capstone project for graduation. This project is a significant opportunity for students to demonstrate their learning and growth, showcasing their readiness for life after high school. Key points about the capstone project: It allows students to explore areas of interest related to their future career or educational goals. Students will work on their projects throughout the school year. The project culminates in a presentation to the community in April. This presentation is a major part of the CLC 12 course assessment. We encourage you to support your child in this important endeavour. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact Brad Carrier, the CLC 12 teacher. Grads, have you signed up? If not, please follow this link: https://forms.office.com/r/rtPT7gBkL8

The first semester has been a busy one for Selkirk's International Student Program! While we say a fond farewell to ten international students returning home, we're excited to welcome six newcomers: Anna from the Czech Republic, Zixi from China, and Inga, Jo, Leo, and Silja from Germany. We look very much forward to their arrival and the fresh perspectives they’ll bring to our community. Our RMISP Winter Activity Day in January at Kimberley Nordic Centre turned out to be a fun and memorable outing. Students readily embraced the winter spirit engaging in the more strenuous disciplines of cross-country skiing and snowshoeing while enjoying a beautiful winter morning amidst stunning scenery. For February, everyone is already looking forward to our second ski trip to Fernie Alpine Resort and as an in-school activity, we’ll be decorating Valentine's Day cookies. If you are interested in joining our program, please contact Barbara del Pino, Rocky Mountain International Student Program Homestay Coordinator, at barbara.delpino@sd6.bc.ca or call/text at (250)-427-6168
