Congratulations to our students on completing their first semester courses and thank you to our staff for their dedication in preparing students for assessments. At the end of January, we said goodbye to several international students. We wish them all the best and will miss their presence in our school community. We are also excited to welcome new students for the second half of the year. Our International Program depends on homestay families—if you are interested in hosting, please contact Barbara del Pino, Homestay Coordinator, at barbara.delpino@sd6.bc.ca. February will be a busy month with Leadership class activities for Valentine’s Day and Pink Shirt Day. We will also begin the course selection process for next school year. Parents are reminded to reach out to your student’s teacher(s) at any time during the semester for updates on academic progress. Here’s to a great start to the second half of the year! ~ Clint Dolgopol

Belonging
Congratulations to Sarah Metzler and Imogen Cvetko-Lueger for being chosen to participate in the BC Youth Parliament at the end of December. The BCYP is an amazing leadership and civic-engagement opportunity for young 16–21-year-olds in our province. Each year, chosen youth gather in Victoria's Legislative Chambers to debate issues, pass service-oriented legislation, and plan meaningful community programs.
Selkirk Vocal Jazz performed at the Homegrown Concert Series at Centre 64 on Saturday night, and were surprised by a generous donation to the music program afterwards!
Pink Shirt Day, Wednesday, February 25- wear pink to show your support! For more information on this campaign please Click Here
At Selkirk, we follow a progressive discipline policy and use the following themes in conveying our expectations to students.
Course Selection Handbook
The Columbia River – Revelstoke MLA Scott McInnis was in to speak with Mr. Keiver’s Social Studies 10 class. He talked about how the Provincial Government works in general as well as specifically showing how a real piece of legislation passes through the legislature. There were lots of questions and great discussion. It was great to have Mr. McInnis back at Selkirk!

Mastery
Independence
Elevating Student Voice and Agency at Selkirk At Selkirk, we are committed to elevating student voice and agency through ongoing discussions, the efforts of our Leadership class and Student Focus Group, and the daily work of staff in their interactions with students. For this success story, we’re highlighting the Student Focus Group’s initiatives. The group recently developed the following Mission Statement: Our mission as the Student Focus Group is to guide positive change by actively improving Selkirk’s student environment through strong leadership, intentional inclusivity and elevating student voice. They have introduced House Teams to promote cross-grade connections through fun, spirit-building activities, and challenges. They are planning a series of House events, including pep rallies, and are surveying students on ways to strengthen school spirit and community around our core values: Generosity, Belonging, Mastery, and Independence. To meet a wide range of student interests, the group is organized into three teams: Events Team– Coordinates pep rallies and full House activities. Academic Support Team– Creates peer tutoring and lunch/after-school support options. Clubs Team– Expands lunch-hour club opportunities. Recently, members joined a staff meeting to share ideas and gather feedback. In late October, teachers facilitated class discussions on key goals, with another round planned for January. A spring survey will follow, ensuring student input continues to guide decisions and align with our broader goals and priorities. They also join PAC meetings monthly to discuss their initiatives with parents.
To celebrate Veganuary Norma Blissett from the Wildsight KimCran Plant-based Potluck Group presented Selkirk Secondary Foods and Nutrition teacher Drew Wetmore with a cookbook- Fantastic Vegan Recipes for the Teen Cook: 60 Incredible Recipes You Need to Try for Good Health and a Better Planet.
Our Grade 9 PHE students took part in a meaningful Health Symposium on January 27th, organized by the PHE Department in partnership with several local community agencies. The event provided students with valuable knowledge, practical tools, and connections to support their overall well‑being. Students met with representatives from KYAN (Kimberley Youth Action Network), who shared ways youth can bring new ideas to life and get involved in established community programs. East Kootenay Addiction Services offered an informative session on harm reduction, helping students better understand safer choices and local supports. Ktunaxa Family Services led workshops focused on anxiety and depression, giving students strategies for recognizing and coping with these common challenges. To conclude the morning, our public health nurse introduced students to the many health services available in our area and how they can be accessed. This collaborative event helped equip our Grade 9 students with important information and resources they can use now and throughout their high‑school years.
On January 13, Mrs Silliphant's Foundations of Math 11 and 12 class visited Kootenay Savings in Kimberley. Assistant branch manager Silja Corlett and former student Halle Krahn led the class through a presentation and interactive games on financial topics that connect with the curriculum in each of the two courses. Topics included building credit, borrowing and investing products, careers in finance and much more. Thank you very much Silja and Halle, we learned so much!
Generosity
As we approach the end of the winter sports season, we would like to take a moment to acknowledge the outstanding achievements and efforts of our teams. Firstly, congratulations to our Junior Boy’s and Girl’s basketball teams for their impressive win this past weekend at the Mt. Baker tournament and for winning their home tournament. Their dedication and teamwork have truly paid off. The Junior boys Lightning team continues to get better with every game; they had a great team win against Laurie Middle School and are getting ready for their last tournament of the season in Sparwood. We want to applaud our Bantam boys’ basketball team for their hard work, which earned them a commendable second-place finish at Laurie Middle School. Our Senior Girl’s Basketball team also deserves recognition for their strong performance, securing a 1st place finish in our home tournament. Their resilience and teamwork were evident throughout the tournament. The Senior Boys Basketball team showed great spirit and determination in their games in our North Star Classic tournament. Although they faced tough competition, their effort and sportsmanship were exceptional. The team is practicing hard for their Zones Championship tournament in Invermere. Selkirk Boys curling team won the East Kootenay zones in mid-January then went on to the Kootenay Regionals. On January 28, Selkirk’s Alpine Team competed in the Kootenay Ski & Snowboard Zones Championships at Fernie and claimed medals in all categories including silver medals in girls’ snowboard, boys’ snowboard, and boys’ ski event. Johanna Barth took bronze as the 3rd fastest girls’ skier and Kian Mohnssen took gold as the fastest boys’ snowboarder. Thank you to all our athletes, coaches, and supporters for making this winter sports season so memorable. Your contributions to our school’s athletic community are invaluable.

CLC Presentations As part of the BC curriculum, all Grade 12 students are required to complete a capstone project for graduation. This project is a significant opportunity for students to demonstrate their learning and growth, showcasing their readiness for life after high school. Key points about the capstone project: It allows students to explore areas of interest related to their future career or educational goals. Students will work on their projects throughout the school year. The project culminates in a presentation to the community in April. This presentation is a major part of the CLC 12 course assessment. We encourage you to support your child in this important endeavour. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact Brad Carrier, the CLC 12 teacher. Grads, have you signed up? If not, please follow this link: STUDENT SIGN-UP FOR CLC
Rocky Mountain International Student Program
This January, we said goodbye to eight international students who have completed their semester with us. While we will miss them greatly, we are proud of the friendships they built, the challenges they took on, and the contributions they made to our classrooms and school community. Before departing, students enjoyed a trip to Fernie Alpine Resort (postponed from December due to weather) as well as an afternoon together at Kimberley Nordic Club as part of our regularly activity schedule. We would also like to congratulate Elena from Spain, who was selected as the first-place winner of RMISP’sMy Great Canadian Experiencevideo contest. This biannual contest invites more than 150 RMISP students from across our schools to submit a short video capturing the highlights of their time in Canada. Elena’s video was unanimously chosen by our panel of judges for its authentic narration, variety of clips, and emotional storytelling. Elena’s winning video can be viewed on the @RockyMountainISP YouTube channel. Moving into February, we are excited to welcome four new German students who are joining us for the second semester. We look forward to supporting them as they settle in, make new friends, and become part of our school community. Please join us in making them feel welcome.
