HOW-TO GUIDE
Asbury First will continue to be available to stream, but a small change in our technology may require a change in how you stream at home. This change will only affect those who use the Boxcast App on their Smart TV to stream. If you stream via YouTube or asburyfirst.org, you won't notice a change at all! If you are currently using Boxcast to view the Asbury First weekly service. Please review the details below on the next steps and let us know if this information is sufficient for you to take the next steps. If needed, we can also provide additional instructions and support. Background: Asbury First will no longer be using Boxcast as the platform for streaming Sunday services, effective Dec 18th. The last Sunday which will be broadcast on Boxcast will be Sunday Dec 15th. The rationale for making this change is both functional and economical. We have made some updates to our live-streaming equipment, and digital encoding that we are moving to is no longer compatible with Boxcast. Additionally, there is a modest cost savings if we no longer need the annual Boxcast license. Boxcast users are a relatively small portion of the viewership each Sunday, less than 20% of the devices tuned in are viewing from Boxcast. We believe the alternative viewing platforms will be a satisfactory replacement for Boxcast. Alternatives to Boxcast: There are two primary alternatives to Boxcast for viewing the Sunday service. One is the Asbury First UMC website, which streams the service live each Sunday, and also maintains an archive of past services. This option is available to anyone using a computer or mobile device, via this link: https://asburyfirst.org/live-stream/ The second option is one that should be available to anyone viewing on a ‘smart TV’, including those using a device like Roku, or Apple TV. That option is to use the YouTube app on your TV or device, and search in the YouTube search bar for Asbury First, with a search of these words: Asbury, First, UMC, Rochester, NY. Alternately, you may type the following address in your browser's address bar: youtube.com/@AsburyFirstUMC YouTube can be used for both live viewing of the Sunday services as well as delayed viewing after the service time, via the same search of YouTube. We are keeping multiple years of services available via YouTube. You may also wish to ‘Subscribe’ to the Asbury First UMC channel on YouTube. That will allow quick access to all Asbury First content, including Sunday Services, as well as just the sermon from each service. How to access alternative viewing options, from my current device: Asbury First UMC website is accessible via a web browser, typically running on a computer or a mobile device with access to the internet. This may not be a viable option for a smart television. YouTube is available from any computer, mobile device (with internet access) AND from a smart television / device with an app for YouTube. If your device does not currently appear to have the YouTube app, you can typically download the app from an app store that is accessible from the device, when it is connected to the internet. YouTube is a free website. You do not need to pay for a subscription of any kind in order to access YouTube. Install YouTube and sign in (you can create a login if you don’t already have one), and then search for Asbury First UMC and subscribe to the channel. If you need further support, or have additional questions: Send an email to the tech team at asburytech@asburyfirst.org or call the church office during office hours at (585) 271-1050. If possible, please confirm you have taken the steps to use one of the alternative viewing methods prior to Boxcast being unavailable prior to the service on Dec 22. Thanks for your patience and understanding as we work together to continue to provide virtual worship opportunities for the Asbury First community. Asbury First Technology Team
