Queridas familias: ¡Les damos la bienvenida a Acuarela! Estamos emocionados de empezar el año escolar con sus alumnos y observar todo lo que aprenderán en ambos idiomas en esta primera unidad. Las primeras dos semanas hacemos un primer repaso rápido por el alfabeto en cada idioma mientras exploran conexiones lingüísticas entre español e inglés, aprovechando una oportunidad para practicar el aislar los sonidos iniciales de las palabras mientras van conociendo las palabras clave para cada letra. Nos basamos en mucha investigación sobre el desarrollo de la lectoescritura, que sugiere que varias pasadas más rápidas por el abecedario (en vez de una pasada muy lenta) es un método más eficaz y equitativo gracias a las oportunidades de repaso de esta práctica intercalada. Pueden pensar en esta unidad como una exposición inicial y en las siguientes unidades como una práctica para el dominio. Sus alumnos practicarán escribir y leer sus nombres, identificar rimas, segmentar las palabras en sus sílabas y sonidos componentes (p. ej., pan → /p/ /a/ /n/) y sujetar el lápiz correctamente, con la meta de prepararlos para trabajar independientemente en el aula. Las siguientes semanas traerán la práctica de formación de las letras minúsculas. Ustedes verán esta práctica en las tareas que recibirán diariamente. Seguirán practicando cómo combinar sonidos para leer palabras en grupo completo y en Enseñanza enfocada, los Centros de fluidez y en los grupos pequeños. Al establecer estas habilidades, sus alumnos estarán preparados para seguir desarrollando destrezas fundamentales para exponerlos a textos decodificables en forma de cuentos comenzando en la Unidad 2. Dear Families, Welcome to Acuarela! We are excited to begin the school year with your students and observe all they will learn in both languages in this first unit. The first two weeks will take a quick first pass through the alphabet in each language while exploring linguistic connections between Spanish and English, taking an opportunity to practice isolating the initial sounds of words while also learning the key word for each letter (/b/ /b/ bubble, /f/ /f/ fire, /g/ /g/ gorilla). This approach is based on research suggesting that it is more effective and more equitable to take several passes through the alphabet rather than one slow one, as the natural review of spiraled practice better supports mastery in the long run. You can think of Unit 1 as a first exposure, knowing students will get ample practice mastering these sound-spelling relationships throughout the year. Your students will practice writing and reading their names, identifying rhymes, segmenting and blending sounds to create words (e.g., fun → /f/ /u/ /n/), and holding a pencil correctly with the goal of preparing them to work independently in the classroom. The following weeks will bring practice in forming lowercase letters. You will see this practice in the assignments you will receive daily. They will continue practicing how to combine sounds to read words as a whole group and in Targeted Teaching and Fluency Centers (our small-group instruction time). By refining these basic ingredients, our students will be prepared to dive into reading decodable stories beginning in Unit 2! If you have time at home to reinforce these skills with additional practice, you can focus on: reading books together or telling stories about the illustrations practicing drawing lines and shapes, and supporting their letter formation practice practicing sounds of the alphabet (Tip: Focus on letter sounds, not names, for now.)
