Estimadas familias: ¡Les damos la bienvenida a Acuarela! Nos entusiasma comenzar el año escolar con sus hijos y ver todo lo que aprenderán en ambos idiomas durante esta primera unidad. En esta unidad, desarrollarán progresivamente sus habilidades de lectura y escritura de kínder, preparándolos para leer sus primeros libros decodificables del año. Tengan en cuenta que, durante la mayor parte del año, sus hijos leerán dos libros por semana; sin embargo, en las dos primeras semanas de clases, avanzaremos lentamente para que los estudiantes tengan éxito, dedicando cuatro días a repasar las relaciones básicas entre sonidos y deletreos antes de comenzar con el primer libro del año en cada idioma. Dear Families, Welcome to Acuarela! We are excited to start the school year with your students and to see everything they will learn in both languages during this first unit. In this unit, they will spiral through their kindergarten reading and writing skills to prepare them to read their first decodable books of the year. Note that for most of the year, your child will read two books per week, but in the first two weeks of school, we take it slow to set students up for success, spending four days reviewing basic sound-spelling relationships before diving into the first book of the year in each language. Over the course of the year, students will get to know many cultures through their decodable stories. The Unit 1 book series are set with silly animal characters in Australia and imaginary giants in Switzerland, starting the year on a light and playful note. In English, your students will work on reading words that mostly have three to four sounds, while in Spanish, they will practice reading mostly two-syllable words. You will see these skills in action as they complete their home practice. Students will continue learning to connect sounds and their spellings, working toward more complex reading and writing goals in both languages over time. In small groups—during Targeted Teaching and Fluency Centers—students will work together to reread stories, spell words, and play fun, interactive reading games based on the characters in their books. These activities will help your students get the most out of their learning. Tip: In Weeks 3-4, we practice consonant clusters. In some programs, these are treated like a unit to memorize (e.g., using flashcards with br, cl, etc.). We do not recommend this. Instead, practice these in the context of real words, slowly separating and blending together the individual sounds.
