ESF board
t the Eudora Schools Foundation (ESF), we believe in the power of bright ideas to inspire brighter futures. Through our consistent efforts to enrich student opportunities, invest in our educators, and make our schools the very best, we are strengthening not just our schools, but the entire Eudora community. It is with great joy that I share our annual report with you, as it gives us a space to pause, reflect and celebrate our collective accomplishments. Over the last 19 years, ESF has been growing and changing, reflecting the growing and changing needs within our district. We've learned how to adjust short-term priorities while always striving to meet long-term goals. The programs, events and celebrations that have become fixtures within our community, continue to have a meaningful impact for our students. While reading the stories within this report, remember that each achievement was once just an idea, a spark, filled with potential. Behind each idea were educators who saw an opportunity to make a difference for their students. Maybe it was an opportunity to enhance learning outcomes, build relationships or expose students to something new. That spark that just needed time, resources and support to grow into a reality. As a community, we have an opportunity to support our educators through our own time, talents and financial contributions. Our annual Give Day Campaign is Tuesday, March 4, 2025. On this day, our goal is to raise $65,000, which we know is no small feat. But I also know that our community is exceptional and can achieve big goals. Your support will help us ignite ideas, expand possibilities and empower the students and teachers who shape our schools. Together, we can succeed. I believe in the power of possibilities, and I believe our community does, too. Thank you for your role in bringing brighter futures to our students. Sincerely, Frances Lyons ESF President
t the heart of every bright future is a child who feels cared for, confident, and ready to learn. For six years, ESF’s Operation Caring program has provided that warmth and support to students who need it most. Every November, in partnership with school administrators, Operation Caring identifies students who need winter essentials. In 2024, with additional support from the United Way of Kaw Valley, the program provided over 65 students—including 27 from Eudora Elementary School—with a brand-new winter wardrobe. On two special days, these students embarked on field trips to Kohl’s and Walmart, accompanied by caring ESF and school staff. Each child, with a personal adult shopper and a budget of $150, selected clothing that fit their needs and style—ensuring they felt seen, respected, and empowered. The experience concluded with a donated lunch from Chili’s or Set'em Up Jacks in Lawrence, making the day even more memorable. Confidentiality and dignity are the guiding principles of Operation Caring, allowing students to receive support in a way that uplifts them. This simple act of kindness ensures our children are warm, confident, and ready to embrace learning and life. By investing in bright ideas like Operation Caring, we strengthen our students and create a community where every child can thrive.

“Having the ROX program at EMS allows us to build a positive culture and empower our girls to be leaders within their school and community.” - Katie Hammerschmidt, EMS Science Teacher & ROX Sponsor
he Eudora Early Learning Center (ELC), which opened in 2024, is a shining example of how early childhood education builds a foundation for lifelong learning. From its welcoming “cardinal park” classroom design to the opportunities it provides for exploration and growth, the ELC reflects our community’s dedication to nurturing bright futures for our youngest cardinals. ESF proudly supported the ELC through the PBIS fund, which helped create a small library filled with engaging books. This resource encourages early literacy skills and sparks a love for learning in our youngest students. Cross-Building Collaboration with ROX One of the most inspiring examples of ESF’s support is the partnership between the ELC and the Ruling Our eXperiences (ROX) program at Eudora Middle School. Led by Katie Hammerschmidt and Michelle Plegge, this program empowers 6th grade girls with confidence, leadership skills, and tools to navigate life’s challenges. Through ESF’s funding and the efforts of these educators, ROX participants had the unique opportunity to visit the ELC during its extended day program.

“Having the ROX program at EMS allows us to build a positive culture and empower our girls to be leaders within their school and community,” said Katie Hammerschmidt, EMS Science Teacher, and ROX Sponsor. The visits were a special experience for both groups of students. The ROX girls served as mentors, engaging with the younger children in activities that fostered learning and connection. These interactions allowed the middle schoolers to develop leadership skills while giving the early learners positive role models to look up to. “These girls came and taught the kids a valuable life lesson! Each girl was able to give one-on-one time to each kid which meant the world to them. Once the girls left, the kids couldn’t stop beaming about them," said Paityn Perez, ELC Extended Day Staff. The Power of Collaboration These cross-building collaborations exemplify the ripple effect of bright ideas in Eudora. Programs like ROX not only empower middle school girls but also extend their impact by enriching the educational experiences of younger students. This partnership builds stronger bonds within our schools, showing the value of working together across grade levels to support student success. “The experience was heartwarming and beneficial for everyone involved. The preschoolers were thrilled to have "big kid" mentors, while our middle schoolers showed incredible kindness and leadership,” said Hammerschmidt. “Working with the preschoolers made me happy. It’s fun to work with little kids because they are learning so much and they are so sweet,” said Hailee Shrimplin a 6th Grade ROX participant. By supporting initiatives like the ELC and ROX, ESF is creating a brighter, more connected future for all students. Together, we are fostering an environment where collaboration, innovation, and compassion prepare every child to shine.

Bright Ideas in Fashion: Project Runway at EHS Creativity shines brightest when students have the tools to bring their ideas to life. The Jones Family at the CPA Picnic '24.
ESF: Growing up in Eudora and now raising your own children here, what makes this community so special to you and your family? KJ: Part of my identification is being from Eudora. My family has been in this community since the 1860’s, and I’m proud of that. I wouldn’t be anywhere else. ESF: You play a significant role in organizing the CPA Picnic. What motivates you to volunteer your time for this event year after year? KJ: Tradition. I have so many memories as a kid of this event, I want my kids, and the entire community to have the same. I want the CPA alive for generations to come. ESF: The CPA has continually donated back to the Eudora Schools Foundation to benefit students and their families. Why do you and the CPA organization believe it’s important to invest in the future of Eudora’s kids? KJ: The CPA has a long tradition of donating to the community. When we donate to ESF, we know they are using the funds in the most responsible way. ESF is so in sync with the families of Eudora, that we are confident they know where it's most needed. ESF: How have you seen the work of the Eudora Schools Foundation make a difference in the lives of students, teachers, and the community? KJ: I love hearing the kids talk about the “big checks” their teachers get. They always have great things to say about the programs these “big checks” provide. ESF: What message would you share with others about the importance of giving back to the community, whether through time or monetary contributions? KJ: Participating and giving back to your community is the only way you are a part of it. Living in a community like Eudora is special, and if you think so too there are many ways you can contribute.
