Did you spot the special stone marker? We are grateful to Marcia Karl Wymer for such a beautiful addition to the pollination bed at the corner of the garden.

Our Purpose
Asbury community garden Fresh Produce
Published June 2024
The Community Garden at Asbury First provides fresh produce for the Dining & Caring Center meals and guests, and for the Grocery Bag Ministry partner churches and Keeping Our Promise Rochester refugee program. Through our efforts we also build relationships, provide education, hands-on learning experiences, meaningful service opportunities, and bring life and purpose to a previously unused and neglected portion of the campus.

EDUCATION
We are excited to start our educational program to go with our new Asbury Community Garden. Opportunities have included learning about Raised Bed Gardening with Marci Muller, Cornell Cooperative Extension—Horticultural/ Master Gardener, and lessons for our children at the "Be the Seed" Vacation Bible School. Look for more events in the future.
FEBRUARY Plant selection and layout completed, seeds procured. MARCH Seedlings were started by the team for broccoli, eggplant, tomatoes, bell and jalapeno peppers, and Nasturtiums. The Children’s ministry start basil, and marigolds. APRIL The beds are topped off with compost/soil mixture and mulch was added to the pathways by our Youth Group. MAY Day Care and Children's ministry help with small projects like painting rocks with vegetable labels. The team put down the string to divide the garden into squares. New trellises were constructed for cucumbers and additional trellises for tomatoes and beans. All the beds have been planted with the grown seedlings and sown seeds. JUNE–SEPTEMBER Volunteers work to water, weed, and tend the garden. Volunteers and those in need harvest fruit and vegetables for different groups or individuals in need of food. OCTOBER Work on clearing out the garden and laying the beds to sleep for the winter.
