Action Magazine 2023
It all started with Take Action Apparel & Gear. With first-hand knowledge that bullying has become a serious epidemic in schools across the nation, Gabriel L. Silva wanted to help give kids like him a voice! "I was a victim of repeated bullying. I am small for my age and kids would make fun of me for my size. Eventually, the verbal turned physical. I know that not everyone is going to like me, and I am actually okay with that. But disliking and mistreating someone physically, verbally, or emotionally for basically being different and not taking the opportunity to get to know them for who they are, is not okay. I had an opportunity to travel to LA for pilot season, when I came home, I found out that three of my friends had had an even harder time than I did at school. I knew what they were feeling, but I was helpless to help them. I wanted to do something. So, we got together with a group of experts and some really cool designers to create Take Action Apparel & Gear." Fast forward through time, and as a result of Take Action Apparel & Gear, Action Magazine was born, giving a worldwide platform for both adults and kids in the industry, who are passionate about taking a stance against bullying, a place to share their stories. Effects on children that either are the bully or that are being bullied go well beyond the school day and sometimes last a lifetime. Students who are bullied sometimes resort to suicide and the bullies often find themselves incarcerated by the time that they are adults. "Action Magazine is a great way to showcase amazing talent within the industry, while at the same time, giving them an opportunity to let kids know that they are not alone and help them to feel empowered. I found my voice through acting/modeling and practicing Tae Kwon Do, I stopped focusing on the negative and was able to discover the positive in me. If we help just one by sharing our stories, then Action Magazine is doing what we have created it to do."

What are five things that you can't live without? The five things that I cannot live without are: My cat Mindy (my emotional support pet) The pharmaceutical inhalation medications (breathing) and chest physical therapy for having Cystic Fibrosis My mom My sister My support system of friends that surround me with unconditional love and support for my music dreams. What's your life's motto or advice that you live by? No matter if you have a disease, illness, disability or are just having a bad day you shouldn't let it stop you from reaching your dreams. What's your favorite color? My favorite color is sky blue. What is your favorite movie? My favorite movie has always been The Giver. What is your favorite TV show? My favorite TV show would have to be New Girl. Do you have any pets? If so, what kind and what's their name? Yes, I do have pets. We have two cats and one dog. My cat's name is Mindy and she is a tuxedo cat. My sister's cat is a Tabby named Millie Minnie. Our family dog, which is a foster to adopt from a rescue, is named Oreo. He is a mix of sweetness. What is your favorite place that you've traveled to? My favorite place I have traveled to so far would have to be Los Angeles. In 2015, I had the absolute pleasure of attending the No Bull Challenge Teen Video Awards as one of their Top 16 winners. Not only was this my first ever time going to California, but it was also my first time being on an airplane which was so exciting. I had always dreamt of traveling to California specifically LA and that dream came true thanks to being one of the winners for the Bad Day Cover Music Video I had done with my good incredibly talented musician friend House Puzzle (Pablo Adame). What is your favorite food? My favorite food would have to be Asian food. I absolutely love specifically Chicken Teriyaki. If you could have dinner with anyone in the world, who would it be with and why? I would love to have dinner with Zac Efron as I have always been a huge fan of his since High School Musical. I have been so impressed to see him using his fan base to make a difference and educate the world of very important subject matters such as sustainability and living nontoxic which is addressed in his Netflix show Down To Earth With Zac Efron. It would be so amazing just to sit there like Anna Kendrick did with him in Season 1 and have a laugh or two. I would love to also have the chance to sing with him just like Zendaya did in The Greatest Showman. What made you want to start singing? When I was 9-years-old, watching America’s Got Talent, a sister duo Christina and Ali came on and sang. They both had Cystic Fibrosis just like I do. That was the moment that I realized that I could achieve anything I set my mind to even with having CF. That is what made me start to focus on singing. What is the most difficult thing about being a musician? Even though I do not play any instruments, I would love to learn how to play piano. I do sing and consider singing as an instrument as you are using your vocal chords. I would say that the most difficult part about singing would have to be controlling my breath and making sure that I am using enough air to fulfill the verses correctly. This is due to the fact that I do have Cystic Fibrosis. Sometimes it can be hard for me to sing to my best potential if I am having a flare up which can cause coughing spasms which are not fun. You are also a songwriter, where do you find inspiration for your music? My first original song was made to make a difference in a friend's life that was struggling greatly with mental health issues that almost became a crisis. I find inspiration for my music in a lot of the big moments in my life that have impacted me greatly. What do you hope people take away from your music? I want others to feel a sense of belonging in who they are and what their journey has been. I want others to also understand that there will be tough times that you go through, but that it will not last forever, and that things will get better. What can we expect your first EP to look like? This is such a great question. I am hoping I can start working on my first EP again. I have two original songs that I would absolutely be so excited to find a music engineer that would want to help change up the original instrumentals of my songs and then have my vocals recorded in a professional studio. At the age of 14-years-old, my first original song “Friends” was released. It is an anti-bullying anthem that also has uplifting and spiritual aspects to it. My dream and aspirations for this song would be to have it featured on a soundtrack album for a known movie/film that would represent my song to its best potential and meaning. My second original song “Country Girl Things” is also dear to my heart as I had dedicated it to a horse rescue and the owner “Grandma Bev” as I call her as they all truly impacted my life greatly. Additionally, I have been working on a song that would be talking about the power of the ocean and just how healing it is. In one word, how would you describe your sound? Soulful Who is your favorite musician and why? My favorite musician would have to be Miley Cyrus. I have always been a huge fan of hers since her Hannah Montana days as I had always dreamt of being on stage like her. I have followed her ever since. it is truly inspiring to see how she kept singing her heart out through all the backlash she was given. She truly taught me to NOT give up or listen to what others think of me. I am so proud of Miley for her new single “Used To Be Young” and showing everybody just how much love you have for yourself (past, present and future). How would you describe your fashion style? I would have to say that my fashion style is a mix of Lauren Daigle and Carrie Underwood. I love bright and funky patterns but at the same time love wearing my good ole country boots and southern style clothing. Who are some of your favorite musicians that you have worked with? When I was 14-years-old, I had the absolute pleasure to work with my good very talented musician friend House Puzzle whose real name is Pablo Adame. I have opened up for Spencer Sutherland and Liberty Down. What advice would you give other kids that want to break into music? I would say to kids who want to break into music to always stay true to who you are and also to not compare yourself even if others are singing the same genre of music that you are. That was something I would have told my younger self. When I was performing a lot at such a young age, I dealt with that aspect of comparison because of how competitive in general the music business can be. Who would be your dream music collaboration and why? My dream music collaboration would have to be Austin Mahone. I have always been a huge Mahomie aka Austin Mahone fan since I was 14-years-old. I have been following him and have been blessed to be friends with his sweet Aunt Lisa. I have been super excited to see that now he is in the Country music genre and is owning up to his roots. What is one thing that nobody knows about you? I like to sing and dance in random places like the grocery store while analyzing the toxic nature of our food products through TikTok. Have you ever been bullied? Yes, I have been bullied starting at the very young age of 9-years-old. I experienced first hand what bullying feels like. The kids in my class would act differently towards me and stare at me as I had to leave early due to having digestive issues which required me to take enzymes before I would have a meal due to Cystic Fibrosis. Bullying did continue throughout middle school consisting of name calling and actually being hit from a quote friend. During the beginning of my singing career, I unfortunately experienced more bullying from actual parents of other artists, people in the community, etc. would tell me not to share that I have Cystic Fibrosis, and experiencing the negative side of having a social media fan base. What is your advice to kids that are suffering from bullying? Always remember that there is someone that you can confide in. You are not alone. Just know that “we are all going through the same things at the same time” as stated in my song "Friends". As a Free2luv Advocate, I highly recommend that you make sure you do not keep the feelings inside to yourself but yet talk to someone you trust to let it out and get advice from them. Do not ever let anyone take that shine away from you. Try to not take what people say too close to heart as words can truly make such a major difference in anyone's life but should not be given much power. If you could talk to your future self, what would you tell her? I would tell my future self to not let anyone take your spirit away and to always love yourself no matter what. Also, do not forget to treat yourself every once in a while.

He’s already been named "One to Watch” by Taste of Country, The Boot & Sounds Like Nashville. Now, coming off 2-Top 40 Billboard Indicator and Top 20 Music Row Singles with the release of 2019’s "I AM", Dylan Jakobsen is prepared to unveil the next chapter of his story to the world with 2021’s "Set Fire to the Night". Stepping off the highs of a pre-pandemic 108-stop radio tour and an extensive, high-energy touring schedule spanning 45 states and 3 continents, the Washington native settled into his home studio just outside of Nashville, TN to begin recording what would become his next album. “We’ve been a lot of places and met so many faces. It truly is the most inspiring thing you can do; setting foot on the road and experiencing life right in the flesh.” Such subject matter can be found prevalent throughout his two country radio singles at the time, “In America” and “I AM”. “This last record ["I AM"] was emphasized as an autobiographical concept where we made a point to share all these pieces of me. It was an extremely personal album, not only in the songwriting process, but down to the very thing I grew up as a kid doing back in the valley of Snohomish, WA. I used to have this old Tascam 8 track and I just remember spending hours upon hours in a room encapsulated with that thing. Taking these songs I’d wrote and stacking layer upon layer of instrumentation until I had put together my one man band. I remember being so proud of the final products at the time and I still am proud. It’s extremely gratifying and fun to crack a smile looking back on how far you’ve come since those early years.” From artist to songwriter and multi-instrumentalist to producer, Jakobsen has always been one to do things his own way and into his new album "Set Fire to the Night", he continues to prove himself as the outside thinker he strives to be.“You won’t see 4 or 5 songwriters listed in the liner notes for a single song. So many of the artists I’ve looked up to over the years, from Petty and Springsteen to Mellencamp and Church, that’s how they found their voices. You’d see one songwriter listed below that track title and I believe that holds its own when it comes to authenticity.” "Set Fire to the Night" is a bounding step into the climate of today's society, but with a positive outlook on the present times and how you have the power to remain in control of your own tomorrows. It’s a theme you’ll find ingrained throughout the entirety of it’s track listing. Between the opening jangly guitars of “Beautiful” and the silver lining, state of mind lyrics found in “Don’t Ya Think?” there’s a radiating energy that shines through. Songs like “Get Back” and “Six”only prove to solidify the country-rockers stadium-like qualities and rhythmic flow that all comes to a cusp with the closing track “Into the Light”. “This is meant to be a record for everyone of all ages. Simple. Honest. Hopeful. I want to spread the message that we all have the choice on how we choose to live out our days. This collection of songs is the product of how I have chosen to live out mine this past year and just in writing them, I feel like I’ve discovered an entire new side of myself that had been waiting to be brought to light. I’m happier than ever and I’m optimistic for what’s to come.” The new album "Set Fire to the Night" is available for streaming and download in stores now. “We’vebeen looking forward to getting back out there and performing these new songs on the road, in front of the fans, for some time now. It’s been too long and I think it’s safe to say we’re undoubtedly craving it at this point.” Action Magazine is honored to highlight this truly talented entertainer. Check our his answers to our staple game of Q&A. And of course, as always, don't forget to follow him on Instagram, you won't regret the journey!
What are five things that you can't live without? My fiancé, my fur babies, my family, music and my physical media collection! What's your life's motto or advice that you live by? I love to find joy in the simple things in life and try not to get caught up in the things that don’t matter. What's your favorite color? I love the colors of nature and it’s natural tones - I’d say green! What is your favorite movie? Marcel The Shell With Shoes On What is your favorite TV show? I’m honestly more of a movie guy myself and rarely commit to a TV show. So my answer is… opt out for a movie night! Do you have any pets? If so, what kind and what's their name? Yes! We live in a zoo! I have 3 dogs; Knight and America, who are Silver Labs, and Junie, who is a Silver Labradoodle. Also 2 cats; Fred and George, named after the Weasley brothers, and they are our mischievous little orange Tabbies. What is your favorite place that you've traveled to? Music has provided the opportunity to travel to so many beautiful places! One of my absolute favorites was being able to explore the vast world down under of Australia. What is your favorite food? Anything vegan! I love trying new locally owned spots in whatever towns we travel too! If you could have dinner with anyone in the world, who would it be with and why? Bruce Springsteen because well… it’s Bruce Springsteen! What made you want to start singing? I gravitated to music at a young age was very quickly inclined to sing and play some of my favorite songs. One of my first concerts ever was an Australian band called Jet and they melted my face off with Rock n' Roll. I pretty much knew in that moment I wanted to grow up and perform like that! What is the most difficult thing about being a musician? Not losing sight of why you got into music in the first place… because music is what makes you happy! Where do you find inspiration for your music? It changes over the years but the past few I have written a lot about practicing gratitude and positivity in your every day life. Mental health and spreading positivity are a huge part of my latest album. What do you hope people take away from your music? Songwriting is a form of therapy for me and when that translates to other folks out there and they are able to heal through it as well… well that is an amazing feeling! You have a new project, “Set Fire to the Night,” tell us about this project? What is your favorite song off of this new album and why? I do - I hope everybody goes and gives it a listen! I remember feeling something truly special when I heard the finished product of my song “Six” for the first time. It is such a reflective and powerful song that embodies that feeling of being a kid and having the world at your fingertips. In one word, how would you describe your sound? Hopeful! In addition to music, what other things are you are passionate about? (charity work, volunteering, etc.) Can you tell us about this work and why do you feel that it is it important? I am passionate about the love and care for all animals that that grace our planet. It is an unfortunate world we live in where so many are abused, used and murdered for human entertainment, experimentation and consumption. The saddest part is so many will never experience a life of freedom and love; many don’t even know such a thing exists. Who is your favorite musician and why? Bruce Springsteen is a huge inspiration to my songwriting process and my sound. How would you describe your fashion style? I have never been asked this one! I would say I love fall and winter so I’m always dressed for the occasion! Even in the hotter months, I tend to wear cozier clothes than most haha. Who are some of your favorite musicians that you have worked with? It’s always a joy when you meet artists who are so kind, humble and down to earth. One that comes to mind is Aaron Watson. He has always been so welcoming whenever we’ve opened out on the road! What advice would you give other kids that want to break into music? Do you! Explore your creativity through songwriting and make something new! Most importantly make something you are proud of! Who would be your dream music collaboration and why? At this point you can probably guess Bruce Springsteen but I will throw a curveball… Tom Petty! What is one thing that nobody knows about you? A lot of people still don’t know how passionate I am about physical media. My music and movie collection is ever expanding! Ask me about either and I could have a conversation forever with you! Have you ever been bullied? Of course! In music, the bigger you get the more people you find are “against” you in one way or another. You learn to tune out those negatives and focus on those who support you because those people and comments are what matter! What is your advice to kids that are suffering from bullying? Bullies bully because they are insecure themselves and are just projecting those insecurities onto you. Practice positivity and learn to focus your attention towards the people in your life who love and care about you. If you could talk to your future self, what would you tell him? I am living in the good days, my friend!

From a girl who really liked a television show about FBI agents to one of the biggest up and coming artists to watch, 18-year-old Alexa Valentino is writing her legacy as a singer/songwriter and she’s not wasting any time. People quickly fell in love with the comfort she radiated as an influencer only to discover her music, which made them feel just that and more. Her writing explores places many are afraid to go, such as Borderline Personality Disorder, depressive thoughts, religious trauma and your run of the mill relationship struggles. Her biggest inspirations are many different young women who were where she is now not too long ago. Pieces of her melodies and lyrics are influenced by artists such as Gracie Abrams, Nessa Barrett, Lexi Jayde, Lizzy McAlpine and more. But many of her role models go even farther back to her early days when she starred in numerous Off-Broadway productions and television projects including NBC’s Ministry of Evil. These include the works of Idina Menzel, Kristin Chenoweth and Lea Michele. Alexa incorporates a wide variety of instrumentation in her music, and is best known for her electric guitar solos, stacked harmonies and acoustic/synth combinations. Most of her tracks feature her on piano, an instrument she’s been playing for a decade and has been teaching for half of one. Her album "The Meaning of Forever” will be available everywhere on July 28th. Action Magazine caught up with this talented young multi-talented young woman to get to know her a lot better. Take a peek at some of her answers to our staple game of Q&A. Don't forget to follow her on Instagram.
What are five things that you can't live without? My phone, folklore, nature, my dogs, sweatshirts What's your life's motto or advice that you live by? It’ll either be a good idea or a good story. What's your favorite color? That changes all the time but at the moment, I’ve been loving green! What is your favorite movie? Probably Tangled. What is your favorite TV show? My favorite show of all time is Shameless, but recently i’ve been obsessed with The Morning Show, Firefly Lane & The Rookie. Do you have any pets? If so, what kind and what's their name? Yes, I have two dogs! Nora is an English Pointer and Isa is a mutt. They’re best friends. What is your favorite place that you've traveled to? Montana! The most beautiful state ever. What is your favorite food? French Fries, I'm a kid at heart. If you could have dinner with anyone in the world, who would it be with and why? Taylor Swift, because she's Taylor Swift. What made you want to start singing? I honestly can’t remember because I was so young, all I remember is I loved it too much to stop. What is the most difficult thing about being a musician? The competitiveness and feeling the need to always be doing more than the people around you. Where do you find inspiration for your music? Lyrically, my life experiences. Sonically, a combination of everything I listen to. What do you hope people take away from your music? I hope they find something special within it that they can’t find anywhere else. You have a new project, “The Meaning of Forever,” tell us about this project? Yes! The album has been out for almost two weeks and I’m so happy with the response it’s gotten so far. It’s really interesting to see people’s takeaways. It’s a 13 song album and they’re all quite different, so I feel like there’s something for everyone. In one word, how would you describe your sound? Experimental. In addition to music, what other things are you are passionate about? (charity work, volunteering, etc.) Can you tell us about this work and why do you feel that it is it important? I’m very much into wellness whether it’s as simple as self care, or more complicated such as religion or spirituality. It’s saved me from some of the worst times of my life and I think it’s really important to incorporate it into your routine in any form you choose. Who is your favorite musician and why? Have I said Taylor Swift yet? How would you describe your fashion style? Very comfortable. You actually have to bribe me to dress up. Who are some of your favorite musicians that you have worked with? Probably Debbie Gibson. She taught me so much of what i know at such a young age and is truly the real deal. What advice would you give other kids that want to break into music? I know it sounds stupid but seriously don’t care about what other people think. Those same people that make fun of you now for being different will beg for a second of your time in a decade. Who would be your dream music collaboration and why? Labrinth. I just want to see how that guy’s brain works. What is one thing that nobody knows about you? I ran a bunch of dance moms fan accounts back in the day. Like a BUNCH. Have you ever been bullied? Oh yeah. Middle school was super rough. After I released my first song I was everyones #1 target. Even teachers gave me a hard time. What is your advice to kids that are suffering from bullying? Everyone is struggling with something. This is just their way of projecting it. I never believed people when they told me that till I got older, but it’s true. If you could talk to your future self, what would you tell her? I’d remind her to always think before she speaks and treat people well despite how they treat you. Karma is real!
Are you a budding actor, model, activist, musician, or more? Would you like to reach not only a national audience but an international one as well? What are five things that you can't live without? My family, my friends, my education, my Charlotte Tilbury contour stick, and my Daisy Love Marc Jacobs perfume. What's your life's motto or advice that you live by? Keep going because you never know how far away your dream life is. It could be right around the corner, so don’t give up on yourself and your goals. What's your favorite color? It’s actually green, but I’ve really been in a pink era recently. What is your favorite movie? My go-to comfort movie is Legally Blonde! What is your favorite TV show? This is always changing, but probably Gossip Girl, The Kardashians, and Grey's Anatomy, if I had to pick my top 3. Do you have any pets? If so, what kind and what's their name? Yes! I have 2 dogs (a Miniature Labradoodle and a Miniature Schnauzer) named Oliver and Lance, and a Yabby cat, Bella. What is your favorite place that you've traveled to? This is hard because they’re all so different, but I honestly think Italy. What is your favorite food? Definitely Sushi, but anything Italian is a close second (especially pasta). If you could have dinner with anyone in the world, who would it be with and why? I have so many people that I wish I could meet, but maybe Lady Gaga? I feel like she would have a lot of advice and perspective that would push me to be better in everything that I do. What made you want to start singing? With voice lessons starting at a young age, I’ve basically been singing my whole life. I participated in all aspects of the music world before songwriting and eventually recording at fourteen. What is the most difficult thing about being a musician? I think it’s always having to keep going. You have to believe in yourself so much and keep pushing yourself out there. You also have to be patient with the process as a whole. It takes a lot of patience in the studio to get your project perfect and exactly how you envisioned it. Then, it’s a whole other battle once it’s finished to work on promo, and hope it gets heard by the right people and appreciated the way you intended. Where do you find inspiration for your music? I would say that I write very self-reflectively, and I find inspiration through personal experience. What do you hope people take away from your music? Despite my often melancholy lyrics, I hope that people are met with comfort, knowing that someone else has gone through what they are going through. My work almost serves as a reminder that we're not alone and everyone has their own sh*t, but it's okay to deal, feel, and heal rather than suppress it. You have a new project, “Back to Hell,” tell us about this project? ‘Back To Hell’ was honestly the most fun I’ve ever had in the studio! I recorded it at Studio 26 in Miami and felt like it really embodied how I was feeling at the time. In one word, how would you describe your sound? This is two words, but: dark and moody. In addition to music, what other things are you are passionate about? (charity work, volunteering, etc.) Can you tell us about this work and why do you feel that it is it important? I am really passionate about mental health and everyone having access to resources despite their circumstances. I believe it should be acknowledged and taken very seriously, and it's shocking how many people don’t believe in medication or who try to tell you what's right and wrong for you. Everyone should be able to communicate how they are feeling and get the help they need without fear or judgment. Who is your favorite musician and why? I can’t choose because everyone is so uniquely talented, but I’m currently on an Ariana Grande wave, and I really appreciate Tyler the Creator and his individualism. How would you describe your fashion style? I would say maybe like a street style y2k kinda vibe, but I also love being comfy and wearing my sweat sets. Who are some of your favorite musicians that you have worked with? I’ve worked with Paul Pesco, Madonna’s guitarist in the past, and truly am so grateful for that experience. What advice would you give other kids that want to break into music? Do it and stick to what you like. Don’t try to change your image or sound for others. This is all about you. What is your sound? Who are you as an artist and why should we care? Being an artist isn’t just about making amazing music, but it's about the brand you create for yourself and how you represent yourself. So, tell a story, paint a picture, and tell people the why. Who would be your dream music collaboration and why? Probably, Nessa Barrett because I love her immensely, and I feel like we write similarly. We both kinda write in that Dark Pop space, and I feel like our music and vibes would mesh well. What is one thing that nobody knows about you? A lot of people don’t know my classical background, but I grew up singing opera, and my first performance, at maybe seven, was me singing an Italian aria. I also went to an all-girls Catholic high school, but I feel like the majority knows that fact. Have you ever been bullied? I would say so. What is your advice to kids that are suffering from bullying? Bullying comes from them, not you. Keep your head up. Things pass. People come and go. It’ll soon be a memory, and you’ll be onto much bigger and better things. If you could talk to your future self, what would you tell her? I would thank her for sticking with her passions and ambitions, and for never giving up on herself.

What are five things that you can't live without? My guitar, my dog, my family, my laptop, and my phone What's your life's motto or advice that you live by? Everything happens for a reason, and it’s all in God’s hands. What's your favorite color? Pink! What is your favorite movie? Pitch Perfect What is your favorite TV show? Right now I’m obsessed with The Summer I Turned Pretty series or The Voice. Do you have any pets? If so, what kind and what's their name? I have a Miniature Dachshund and her name is Crue. What is your favorite place that you've traveled to? So far my favorite place I’ve traveled to is St. John in the USVI. What is your favorite food? Chipotle or Sushi If you could have dinner with anyone in the world, who would it be with and why? I’d have dinner with Taylor Swift, I’d love to just learn more about her writing style because she’s a lyrical genius in my opinion and I’d love to learn from her. What made you want to start singing? Honestly, I can’t pinpoint exactly what made me want to start singing. I’ve been singing since I was 4-years-old. However, as I got older I couldn’t picture my life not being a singer, so I started playing gigs and writing new music. Now my debut single comes out on August 25! What is the most difficult thing about being a musician? Being told no over and over again isn’t easy. You can go into an audition or a song pitch and think you just did amazing, and still get told no. You just gotta keep your head up and keep trying, because it just takes one yes to change your path. Where do you find inspiration for your music? I pull a lot of inspiration for my music from my personal experiences. What do you hope people take away from your music? I hope people can find my music relatable. The reason I write about my own personal experiences is because I want to help people who are feeling the same way as I have. For me music helps me through a lot, and hearing a song that conveys the same emotion I’m feeling makes me feel so much better. You have a new project,“Nashville Bar,” tell us about this project? "Nashville Bar" is a song I wrote back in 2021 right after I visited Nashville for my 21st birthday. One night on our trip my friends and I were at Whiskey Row and started talking to these guys and ended up running around Broadway with them for the rest of the night. The whole experience was like something out of a movie. We were all having the best time with no worries, going into all of the bars. When we left, I went home and wrote "Nashville Bar" in about 15 minutes. The lyrics were just pouring out of me, and it has been the easiest song I’ve written to this day. In one word, how would you describe your sound? Fun In addition to music, what other things are you are passionate about? (charity work, volunteering, etc.) Can you tell us about this work and why do you feel that it is it important? In addition to music, I’m really passionate about cheer. I currently coach a team in my hometown and it’s something I always loved and now I get to share my love of cheer with the athletes I coach! Who is your favorite musician and why? This is such a hard question to answer. I’m going to have to go with Taylor Swift. Mainly because she is so good at writing songs and her lyrics are amazing. No matter the amount of backlash shes received she keeps doing her thing and I love that about her. How would you describe your fashion style? Probably something like western glam. Who are some of your favorite musicians that you have worked with? My producer Chris Love is amazing and so so so talented! What advice would you give other kids that want to break into music? Keep going no matter what anyone tells you. Use every “no” as motivation and just keep putting the work in. The work is worth it! Who would be your dream music collaboration and why? I would absolutely love to collaborate with Megan Moroney. I love her songs and the lyrics are all so great, I think we could make a bop together. What is one thing that nobody knows about you? Most people don’t know that I lived in the US Virgin Islands for 3 years of my childhood. Have you ever been bullied? Yes What is your advice to kids that are suffering from bullying? I know how hard it can be, especially when you’re young. My best advice is to talk to and lean on your family. My mom and dad really helped me through some really hard times and so did music. Somedays it can feel like your whole school is against you, but I promise things do get better. I’m very big on faith as well, and praying to God really helped me a lot too. Remember to surround yourself with positive people who love you regardless of what others say about you, because true friends don’t make you feel bad about yourself, and absolutely do not change who you are for other people. Stay true to yourself! If you could talk to your future self, what would you tell her? If I could talk to my future self I would probably ask her how music is going, and ask her where she’s living now. At 23, everything is so up in the air for me right now. I guess I’d also tell her thank you, because I know future me will still be chasing after the music dream!

Action Magazine caught up with this amazing young lady to get to know her a bit better. Here are her answers to our Q&A! Stay tuned, because we have a feeling that we will be seeing a lot more of Bell in the music world!
What are five things that you can't live without? I can’t live happily without creating or going out into nature. I couldn’t live without the people I love and lean on. And I could never live without a cute, yummy daily drink and the art that I love whether that’s through books, music, photos, poetry, videography, etc. What's your life's motto or advice that you live by? One thing that will stay with me forever (literally, I have it tattooed on my arm) is the phrase I got from my dance teacher when I was in 8th grade when my friends and I had been made fun of by a group of girls in middle school for being Hispanic or Black, for having single moms and because a lot of my friends were first language Spanish-speakers. My friend and I went to our dance class after school and told our teacher how these girls had called us, “ghetto” and how we were hurt by that. And she said “No, you’re artistically ghetto” and that stuck with me because it turned something that was given to us with a negativity and hatred into something empowering. Being artistically ghetto means you’re creative, resourceful, independent and powerful, that you can make things happen out of nothing. What's your favorite color? Lavender is my favorite color, scent, flavor, thing to ever exist right now. I even wrote a song about it called “Lavenderland”. What is your favorite movie? Spirit is my favorite childhood movie and Footloose (2011) is my favorite teenage movie. I haven’t figured out my favorite adult movie yet. Barbie is a strong contender. What is your favorite TV show? Shameless, Criminal Minds, Spongebob,That 70’s Show, Gilmore Girls and Queens Gambit (I can’t choose). Do you have any pets? If so, what kind and what's their name? Yes! I have 2 Calico cats named Billy and Nina. Nina is our sassy, independent, no nonsense girl cat and her brother Billy is a chonk grey and white cuddly cat. What is your favorite place that you've traveled to? I love, love, love traveling. I’ve been to so many countries all around the world but my absolute favorite memory of traveling is when my husband and I renovated a 1989 Ford Van Econoline and traveled the western United States for 2 and a half months. Oregon was one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever been. Forests that lead to oceans, hot springs, the rain, lakes and mountains, and the people were so nice, we felt so safe traveling through Oregon. We loved it so much that we hope to live there one day. What is your favorite food? Chcik-fil-A forever. If you could have dinner with anyone in the world, who would it be with and why? Yair, forever and ever. What made you want to start singing? I’ve been singing since before I can even remember. My mom and grandma say that I always used to sing “Once Upon a Dream” from Sleeping Beauty everywhere we went and I would always wear the pink princess costume as well. Then when I was 4 or 5, Hannah Montana came out and I would dress up like a pop star and perform “The Best of Both Worlds” every time a new episode came on. And from there, with every artist I loved, I would sing their songs in talent shows and Karaoke birthday parties and in rock star after school class (the best class to ever exist). And then when I had enough life experience to write my own songs, I would sing those. What is the most difficult thing about being a musician? The most difficult thing about being a musician is being very in tune with your emotions and imagination and spilling that onto the music and discovering that just because you make music doesn’t mean people will listen or get it. The best thing about being a musician is when they do understand it and they love it. You are also a songwriter, where do you find inspiration for your music? I find inspiration in conversations, road trips, books, photos, magic, nature, music and inspiration itself! What do you hope people take away from your music? My goal is to make music that makes people think about themselves and their life and if they are doing what is fulfilling to them. I also just love to write songs about topics that aren’t really main stream because I think it’s important to talk about more. I hope for people to dream more, imagine more, heal more and learn more and that’s what I hope they can take away from my music. What new and exiting projects do you have out or on the horizon that you want to tell us about this project? My most recent project, and my first project as Bell Littell came out in June! It’s called “Fay’s Forest”, it has 8 songs, some are brand new songs and some are new versions of previously released songs when I was going by Isabell Littell. And I’m always writing so there will always be more music in the near future. In one word, how would you describe your sound? In one word I would describe my sound as a “romanticism.” In addition to music, what other things are you are passionate about? (charity work, volunteering, etc.) Can you tell us about this work and why do you feel that it is it important? I love animals and I love nature. I’m also very passionate about equal rights. These are all things that are present in my daily life, good or bad. I believe in progress and I am apart of the fight for women’s rights, immigrant’s rights, Black people's rights and the LGBTQ communities rights. If there’s a protest, I’m there. If there’s a petition, I’m signing it. If it’s happening in front of me, I’m standing up. Progress in our society is so important and this also includes protecting our planet, wildlife, children and each other. Who is your favorite musician and why? What is your favorite album or song? My favorite musician is Taylor Swift because of how eloquent she is. She creates music for the masses but her songs feel like they were written specifically for you. I also think she has carved her own path that so many young people have been able to follow and that path is not only about the music, it’s about artists rights and artistic integrity and her ability to create something that really brings people together through excitement, feelings, lyrics, music and friendship. It’s all really admirable and inspiring to me. My favorite albums are "1989" (soon to be Taylor’s "Version"), folklore and "Dance Fever"! How would you describe your fashion style? My fashion style (for now) is very much inspired by Stevie Knicks. Who are some of your favorite musicians that you have worked with? Detre Val is one of my favorite producers I’ve worked with. He knows how to take a song from being good to being a banger within a very small window of time and he loves music as much as he loves uplifting other artists which makes him one of the best kinds of artists and people to work with. (@detrevalon Instagram! He makes Neo-soul music that is sooo groovy). Père Pane is another musician I love and a good friend of mine. His music is like a dark dreamscape with poetry for lyrics and he is so multi-faceted with his craft and love for music. He could make a somber folk song and then turn around to make a hip hop song about patriarchy which is really cool to see and learn from. What advice would you give other kids that want to break into music? Write your own songs! Experiment and find your own sound. Start with GarageBand or Protools on a computer and work your way up as you learn to eventually produce, record, and release. Most importantly, continue to create and innovate your music so that you make something you love and know is worth releasing. Who would be your dream music collaboration and why? Jack Antonoff is my dream music collaboration. He has produced on so many of my favorite songs with so many of my favorite artists without being at all repetitive. I think working with him would be magical and some of the best songs would be made. What is one thing that nobody knows about you? No one knows what I’m gonna do next! Have you ever been bullied? Yes, but only by people who I can now see were being bullied at home. What is your advice to kids that are suffering from bullying? My advice to kids that are suffering from bullying is to never let anyone take your power from you. Bullies want to feel powerful for plenty of different reasons and if you don’t give that to them, you win. Whether that’s ignoring them, standing up for yourself, telling a parent or teacher or outsmarting them. Never let anyone take your power away from you. If you could talk to your future self, what would you tell her? I would tell her I’m doing everything I can so that she is where she wants to be.

Xavier Robert, formerly known as YOUNG XAV, is an American recording artist and songwriter from Chicago, Illinois. He’s a representative of the modern musical era by date but not by sound. The sound is colossal, the approach - timeless. Having lived in a household with a DJ for a father, musical aptitude is embedded in his DNA. Having embarked on a couple nationwide tours and growing a fan base hailing from SoHo to SoCal, it’s evident that his sound transcends through cultures, area codes, and time zones. What are five things that you can't live without? Trying to add an order of significance to this list is a tough one, for sure. So in no particular order: Film/Movies, coffee, those I love, exercise, the seasons/changing of weather What's your life's motto or advice that you live by? There isn’t a particular motto or quote that influences my day-to-day; however, I think the significance in remembering to be present is crucial. Whether that is being present in the moment or in one’s feelings: the human experience is to experience. Understanding and appreciating what is happening in a given moment is the ultimate way to experience something. What's your favorite color? Red What is your favorite movie? As a massive film fanatic — this is always a complicated question. I’d have to place Marc Webb’s (500) Days of Summer at number one. What is your favorite TV show? LOST Do you have any pets? If so, what kind and what's their name? I have a German Shepherd named Cooper Black. Fun fact: Cooper Black and I actually share the same birthday. He is only 7 months old now — so I very much look forward to celebrating our first birthday together come February 2024. What is your favorite place that you've traveled to? Oahu, Hawaii. Most of my love and sentimentality for the beautiful island is synonymous with my love for my favorite TV show, LOST. Primarily since the entirety of the show was shot there. What is your favorite food? Sushi. Nothing can beat it. If you could have dinner with anyone in the world, who would it be with and why? I think the concept of having dinner with a significantly younger or older version of myself would be way to go. I think it would not only be interesting, but beyond informative of what I should focus on with my present self. What made you want to start singing? Being a consumer and wanting to make songs that cater to my personal tastes. What is the most difficult thing about being a musician? Now that music creation is so accessible, trying to stand out from the noise is difficult. Navigating social media and having to constantly fight algorithms is definitely a challenge for my generation of artist. Where do you find inspiration for your music? A bit cliché, but everything. Experience, the way I feel leaving the movie theater after seeing a new film, nostalgia, etc. Anything and everything can inform my work. The foundation is definitely “feelings” though. What I feel or what I want my listener’s to feel. What do you hope people take away from your music? I think of some of my favorite songs. Most of them are associated to a memory or a time in my life. I think creating moments like this for others would be the highest form of a take away for me. What new and exiting projects do you have out or on the horizon that you want to tell us about this project? I have spent the past 5 years of my music career building my brand under the name “YOUNGXAV”. I recently just decided to start from scratch and start over under “HIS NAME WAS XAV”. I’m very much looking forward to releasing new music under this re-brand. As well as embark on my first tour under the new name this October. In one word, how would you describe your sound? Dynamic In addition to music, what other things are you are passionate about? (charity work, volunteering, etc.) Can you tell us about this work and why do you feel that it is it important? I am immensely immersed in the significance of history. I do as much as I can to inform myself, read about it, and consume as much content that provides insight of the past. History is not just the study of the past, but an explanation for the present. I think if people would develop an understanding of where we as beings came from and why we are the way we are: we would have a much more empathetic and aware society. Who is your favorite musician and why? I always find this question to be a tough one. The way I like to answer it is by asking myself “if any artist was going to drop a new album tonight, who would you be most excited for it to be?” My answer: probably Twenty One Pilots. Contrary to popular belief, I consume little to no music. However, Twenty One Pilots have probably taken up a lot of the time I spend listening to music. I think they are inherently different from anyone out there right now. How would you describe your fashion style? Comfortable. I think regardless of what it is I’m wearing — I feel comfortable. It is a representation of me and not a lot of mind is paid to what others think. Who are some of your favorite musicians that you have worked with? I’ve worked with a lot of fantastic artists. Edwrds from New York probably being number one. I also appreciate relationships with singer/songwriters, Aanjolique and Miliani Vargas. What advice would you give other kids that want to break into music? Embrace the delusion. Create as much as you can and chase it all. Who would be your dream music collaboration and why? That’d probably be Dan Reynolds from Imagine Dragons. I am just a fan of his character and fascinated by his creative process. What is one thing that nobody knows about you? I am at my absolute happiest when it is thunder storming. The worse the storm, the better. Have you ever been bullied? Yes, I have. What is your advice to kids that are suffering from bullying? “Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by incompetence”. I’ve commonly heard the sentiment that “kids are just mean”; however, I think it is just kids not knowing any better. The quote (in context of bullying) doesn’t make bullying excusable, but I think I would emphasis that it’s not personal. Above all, it certainly doesn’t last forever. Don’t let the short-comings and lack of understanding of others affect how you feel about yourself.

Hip-Hop, as we know it today, started in the 1970's in New York as a multicultural exchange between Black, Caribbean, and Latino youth. The music provided a way for the marginalized youth of low-income areas to describe to the world their take on the social, economic, and political realities of their lives. Jamaican DJ Kool Herc has been recognized as the earliest Hip-Hop DJ. By some, he has been credited as the originator of the sound with his 1973 hit, "Back to School Jam". Yet, of course, DJ Kool Herc wasn't alone in establishing Hip-Hop. There were many in the 70's that helped to pioneer the sound that would become one of the most predominant music genres in the world. People such as DJ Disco Wiz, Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, and Afrika Bambaataa were also among the Hip-Hop genre's pioneers. The evolution of the Hip-Hop culture was divided into four main categories at the time: DJing, rapping/MCing, breakdancing and graffiti (think present-day Jean-Michel Basquiat). In terms of music, popular tunes such as Kurtis Blow's "The Breaks," the Sugarhill Gang's "Rappers Delight," and Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five's "The Message" took over the airwaves. Hip-Hop was officially born and here to stay.

Life is a climb. What's your favorite color? Purple What is your favorite movie? Lilo and Stitch What is your favorite TV show? Friends Do you have any pets? If so, what kind and what's their name? Yes, I have a cat. Her name is Mia. What is your favorite place that you've traveled to? Hawaii What is your favorite food? French Fries If you could have dinner with anyone in the world, who would it be with and why? Adele, she is my inspiration and she is hilarious. What made you want to start singing? I was very inspired by Hannah Montana when I was little, I started to find a love for music and singing back when I was 3 and it has been my escape and happiness ever since. What is the most difficult thing about being a musician? Social media & constantly feeling like everything is a competition. Where do you find inspiration for your music? My everyday life and things I go through. What do you hope people take away from your music? That I am authentic, all of my songs are my stories & that they are relatable no matter what the situation is they perceive it. You have a new project,“Turbulence,”tell us about this project? "Turbulence" is my most recent release. I wrote it about the ups and downs of life & I wanted to find a way to get the message across while also having a fun beat so it’s relatable but also a up beat feel good song. In one word, how would you describe your sound? Truthful In addition to music, what other things are you are passionate about? (charity work, volunteering, etc.) Can you tell us about this work and why do you feel that it is it important? I currently am not part of anything actively but something I am very passionate about is helping people and if there is anything I can ever do for anyone I will and be there for anyone if they need a shoulder to lean on. Surround yourself with people who love you for who you are & never be scared to ask for help when needed. You are never alone we have all been there in some way shape or form! If you could talk to your future self, what would you tell her? I would say as hard as you thought it was you got through it and you are so strong and happy and that is all that matters in the end.

What are five things that you can't live without? Family, friends, art of all kinds, Calvin and Hobbes comics, and baseball caps. What's your life's motto or advice that you live by? It’s cliche but to trust in time. Time is good, it makes big things small- gives perspective. Also that everything good is supposed to take time, we don’t want fast synthetic things. What's your favorite color? Green What is your favorite movie? I have a lot but I recently rewatched Arizona Dream and I love that movie so much so I’d have to say that one. What is your favorite TV show? It also fluctuates but I think Scrubs. Do you have any pets? If so, what kind and what's their name? I have a Tabby cat named Bingley. What is your favorite place that you've traveled to? Annecy in France, I went there for my cousin’s wedding. What is your favorite food? Probably burgers If you could have dinner with anyone in the world, who would it be with and why? Larry David. Would love to have a conversation with him. What made you want to start singing? I don’t think I can go back that far. I hear stories from my relatives and my parents that I was singing and dancing around as a toddler. I suppose it’s quite cathartic. What is the most difficult thing about being a musician? The mental barriers probably. About wanting to get better and self-expression, and the endless self-involvement that comes with writing what you’re thinking and feeling all the time, is exhausting. Where do you find inspiration for your music? In my life, like most people. If I’m feeling particularly uninspired I’ll listen to a bunch of music I like and read and see what creativity gathers. What do you hope people take away from your music? I just hope people don’t think it sucks. You have been busy since you were featured in our March/April 2023 issue of AM. You have a new project out, “Nowhere Bar,” tell us about this project? It was a song I wrote in the throws of quarantine and I was feeling a lot of inwardness. Without being around many people and feeling listless and endlessly bored and with a lot of pent up creative energy with nowhere to put it. In one word, how would you describe your sound? Unscrupulous In addition to music, what other things are you are passionate about? (charity work, volunteering, etc.) Can you tell us about this work and why do you feel that it is it important? I volunteered at a dog shelter in long island last summer which was very rewarding. I got to hang out with all kinds of dogs. The place is called arf, I’ve been going since I was a kid to visit the cats and dogs and I’ve adopted two cats from there. It’s a wonderful organization. Who is your favorite musician and why? Again, it always fluctuates but right now it’s St Vincent. How would you describe your fashion style? Relaxed chic Who are some of your favorite musicians that you have worked with? I’ve been working with my main producer Eric Scullen for almost two years now and he’s absolutely wonderful. He’s done all my currently released music with me. What advice would you give other kids that want to break into music? Trust yourself, trust your vision, but be open to growth and be prepared to contradict yourself. Who would be your dream music collaboration and why? Matty Healy and/or George Daniel of the 1975. Brilliant What is one thing that nobody knows about you? My cousin calls me Skittles. Have you ever been bullied? I have not. I went to a very small school growing up and a very liberal arts high school so I have not experienced bullying. What is your advice to kids that are suffering from bullying? Talk to people you trust about it, they can help you. Don’t bottle yourself up. Try as hard as you can to not let it change you. If you could talk to your future self, what would you tell her? Future self?? Normally it’s the past self. I don’t know what I’d have to say. Any question or advice I’d have she’d know already. Maybe I’d ask where she’s living, cause I have no idea where I’ll end up.
Photos 1 & 2 credit: Steven Wood
What are five things that you can't live without? Five things I can’t live without would be my guitar, green tea, slide on checkered vans, family, & a good comic book. What's your life's motto or advice that you live by? I live by the motto It’s Okay to Not be Okay. It means a lot to me and is a reminder that without the dark times we go though we wouldn’t be able to truly appreciate the joy of life positives. What's your favorite color? My favorite color is black. What is your favorite movie? The Rush Hour franchise is my favorite batch of movies ever. Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker are hilarious. What is your favorite TV show? My comfort TV show at the moment is Justice League Unlimited. I’m a big fan of DC comics. What is your favorite place that you've traveled to? It’s such a hard decision picking one place but I’ll say the Amalfi coast. The atmosphere was intoxicating and inspiring. What is your favorite food? Pizzaaaa If you could have dinner with anyone in the world, who would it be with and why? It would be my friends because of our hilarious conversations and poor table manners. Going out to dinner with them is always an event I’ll cherish. What made you want to start singing? Seeing the impact music had on not only myself but others really motivated me to become an artist of sound. If I could create something meaningful or even just fun to dance to, my younger dreams were accomplished. What is the most difficult thing about being a musician? One of the most difficult things about being a musician is reminding yourself why? With social media it can become easy to be doing it for the wrong reasons. I would have quit if I didn’t rekindle my reason for creating. Where do you find inspiration for your music? Everywhere around me I’m inspired. What I feel, see, hear, and even taste is a muse. The human experience is a beautiful chaos I love to observe. What do you hope people take away from your music? I hope people can take away that we all can go a little deeper. Spiritually and mentally we can achieve great things by being vulnerable and open to change. You have been busy since you were featured as our cover interview of the September/October 2021 issue of AM. Tell us about any new projects and what have you been up to? Since we last spoke I’ve released a few singles and performed a bunch. The main summer tour I was going to do was canceled but I still was able to hit a few venues to grow with the audience and sound. Other than that I’ve been keeping busy traveling and creating new music. I don’t wanna say too much because it deserves to be intentional but I got an album in the works. In one word, how would you describe your sound? AMBIVALENT Who is your favorite musician and why? I have way too many favorites to even choose one. Live performance wise however I would say Jon Bellion. There was one month where my friends and I saw him perform 3 separate occasions. Jon’s ability to reimagine songs he wrote into an experience so truly in the moment was beautiful! Even my Pops was dancing and smiling. How would you describe your fashion style? Chaotic… I’m inspired by a lot of my favorite superheroes and anime characters so I like to look as main character as possible. lol Who are some of your favorite musicians that you have worked with? Some of my favorite musicians I’ve worked with include my brother from Chicago “His Name Was Xav”, Charles Harke, and the Hip-Hop collective c7 from Long Island. They all have traits that make them unique and I honestly don’t like working with many people so that means something. What advice would you give other kids that want to break into music? Stay true to yourself. Society as a whole is very afraid of change but have fun! People take themselves too seriously most of the time. Who would be your dream music collaboration and why? Gosh! I’d love to work with artists like Dominic Fike & Bakar. What is one thing that nobody knows about you? I want to live outside of the country one day for the experience. Have you ever been bullied? I’ve been bullied and I’ve been the bully. That’s life honestly. What is your advice to kids that are suffering from bullying? Life goes on and days get brighter. Also remember it’s okay to not be okay. Without having the lows we wouldn’t truly know how great life can be. If you could talk to your future self, what would you tell him? Keep going twinkle toes. Growing up is strange but you always have been meant for great things!

The mid-80's saw the ushering in of the age of new school Hip-Hop with groups such as Run D.M.C. and LL Kool J. This new era sharply contrasted with the previous era as it included with influences from the world of rock music. Hip-Hop during this era was notable for focusing even more on socio-political commentary.
During this time, Hip-Hop began to spread to an international audience in places across the world and artists such as The Beastie Boys also began to take center stage, spreading the Hip-Hop message.
At this point, the new era of Hip-Hop is giving way to the late 80's and early 90's. The Golden Age of Hip-Hop is coming on to the scene with artists such as Public Enemy, Tupac Shakur, The Notorious B.I.G., MC Hammer, Boogie Down Productions, Snoop Dogg, Nas, A Tribe Called Quest, and Big Daddy Kane. During this time, music lovers also saw the rise of gangsta rap, with artists like Schoolly D, Ice-T, and N.W.A. exploding on to the scene.

However, we would remiss, at this point if we didn't mention the lovely ladies of Hip-Hop who all dominated the mic in the beginning and continue to do so today. Women such as Queen Latifah, MC Lyte, Monie Love, Salt-N-Pepa, Bahamadia, Foxy Brown, Lil' Kim, Missy Elliott, Roxanne Shante, Sha-Rock...etc. etc. paved the way for the female voice to be heard in what was considered for the longest time a male-only sound. Today, the metamorphosis continues as Hip-Hop has begun to incorporate sounds from genres such as punk, jazz, indie rock, and electronic. We could have filled the pages of this issue, and many more, with only because Hip-Hop is such an expansive genre that is so important to our culture on multiple levels. We have highlighted just a few of those who have contributed to making Hip-Hop what it is today. Artists such as Travis Scott, Cardi B, Megan Tee Stalion, Drake, among many others continue to carry on the torch, creating and evolving the sounds that we all love. Happy 50th, Hip-Hop! We are truly ready for another 50 more and beyond.
