Action Magazine 2023
It all started with Take Action Apparel & Gear. With first-hand knowledge that bullying has become a serious epidemic in schools across the nation, Gabriel L. Silva wanted to help give kids like him a voice! "I was a victim of repeated bullying. I am small for my age and kids would make fun of me for my size. Eventually, the verbal turned physical. I know that not everyone is going to like me, and I am actually okay with that. But disliking and mistreating someone physically, verbally, or emotionally for basically being different and not taking the opportunity to get to know them for who they are, is not okay. I had an opportunity to travel to LA for pilot season, when I came home, I found out that three of my friends had had an even harder time than I did at school. I knew what they were feeling, but I was helpless to help them. I wanted to do something. So, we got together with a group of experts and some really cool designers to create Take Action Apparel & Gear." Fast forward through time, and as a result of Take Action Apparel & Gear, Action Magazine was born, giving a worldwide platform for both adults and kids in the industry, who are passionate about taking a stance against bullying, a place to share their stories. Effects on children that either are the bully or that are being bullied go well beyond the school day and sometimes last a lifetime. Students who are bullied sometimes resort to suicide and the bullies often find themselves incarcerated by the time that they are adults. "Action Magazine is a great way to showcase amazing talent within the industry, while at the same time, giving them an opportunity to let kids know that they are not alone and help them to feel empowered. I found my voice through acting/modeling and practicing Tae Kwon Do, I stopped focusing on the negative and was able to discover the positive in me. If we help just one by sharing our stories, then Action Magazine is doing what we have created it to do."

Her career began as a politics and entertainment writer at Newsweek. What are five things that you can't live without? My homemade quilts from my mother and aunt; a book about something I want to learn; my houseplants; Spotify; hot beverages in the morning. What's your life's motto or advice that you live by? Love without fear. What's your favorite color? Yellow. Every time I see yellow I feel bright and at ease. What is your favorite movie? Sister Act 2. The film introduced me to Lauryn Hill and she was instrumental to my musical development. What is your favorite TV show? Avatar: The Last Airbender. I watched this at such a challenging time in my life and it reinforced a childlike-curiosity that I do my best to tap into daily. Do you have any pets? If so, what kind and what's their name? I have a 20-year-old cat named Lauralie. She still looks like a kitten. What is your favorite place that you've traveled to? Two places: Tokyo, Japan and Oaxaca, Mexico. My biological family has a rich history in Tokyo so the trip was very important to me. I’d recommend Oaxaca to anyone looking for an extensive yet relaxed culinary experience. What is your favorite food? Pie made by my mother, aunt, grandmother (RIP) or Sweet Williams bakery in Salisbury, Connecticut. If you could have dinner with anyone in the world, who would it be with and why? Pharrell. I admire how he’s taken his skills and talent to the top of multiple industries and I’d love to know more about the spiritual practices he’s developed to support his endeavors. You are a multi-faceted individual. Tell us about the various things that you do. I’m a journalist, social media director, and entrepreneur dedicated to innovating the way stories are told and experienced. I’ve had the privilege of developing LinkedIn’s first editorial social video strategy and contributing to renowned publications such as Newsweek Magazine, Gizmodo, International Business Times, Philadelphia Daily News, Truth Out, and more. In 2019, I co-founded ReelwUrld to reimagine social networking by fusing it with filmmaking. We built an app for our first show, Justice For Hire, where every video you post becomes part of the show’s story, blurring the lines between creator and audience. We’re creating a new form of storytelling that truly honors the audience as creative collaborators. What is the hardest thing about doing what you do? Setting boundaries of when to stop/turn off. I remind myself daily that my best work will not happen if my mental state is malnourished. Who are some of the most interesting people that you have produced content for and why? Earlier this year, I was honored to develop social strategy and produce video for LinkedIn’s interview with Former President Barack Obama. I’d never produced content with so much guaranteed visibility, and it was no doubt a career highlight. What has been the one content creation story that sticks out to you and why? Last month, my co-founder Jan Lucanus and I hosted an action choreography class with Act Now, LA's LGBTQIA+ acting studio. By the end of the class, we aimed to shoot a scene for Justice For Hire’s upcoming Hero SZN. It was a success! Everyone showed up with their Justice For Hire character, learned personalized action choreography, and we all shot a dynamic action scene in just under 3 hours. Stay tuned for the episode. (We’re planning more classes like this and we’d love to have you as part of the Justice For Hire cast. Follow us @justiceforhire to learn more.) Tell us more about your role with ReelWurld? ReelwUrld is really a culmination of a question I’ve been chasing the answer to for my whole career: How can story have a more tangible impact on how we take action in real life? We receive inspiration or knowledge in nearly every type of media we consume, yet there’s often a disconnect between receiving that inspiration or knowledge and actually doing something with it in the real world. The first time I experienced this frustration was at 22-years-old during my first job out of college as an op-ed writer for a political strategist. We were providing insight, facts and personal stories to audiences across the country yet I didn’t feel I was making a difference in our population’s ability to truly understand each other’s lives. As a staff writer at Newsweek, I would critique the world’s most popular movies and TV shows to dissect important social issues reflected on screen, yet the only time audiences would band together, mobilize, and take action was when a show got canceled and they wanted another season. Imagine if that same effort and organization was also put toward a social cause. This pattern continued in my career as the years passed. I finally met my co-founder Jan Lucanus and we discussed ReelwUrld, a social network where everything you post is part of a movie or TV show that we’re all making together. For the first time, I felt I actually had a solution to this career-long problem I was experiencing. ReelwUrld makes the audience the story itself, which shrinks that gap between the story and it’s real world impact—because they are now one in the same. I always hear people say, “If you can see it, you can be it,” but ReelwUrld creates a clear path to “do it.” What has been your favorite video that you have posted to date. Why? Our first episode of Justice For Hire, which got more than 7M views on TikTok. This was a milestone moment for us because we saw how much the audience is ready, willing, and able to contribute to both change in, a) the entertainment industry, and b) the way we solve the world’s problems. Who is your favorite actor/actress and why? Issa Rae is incredibly inspiring to me as an actor/writer/director. She’s set a high bar for what it means to truly connect with your audience. How would you describe your fashion style? My mother is a seamstress and has an eye for unique fabrics, quality textures, and durable craftsmanship. My closet reflects her expertise, and is inspired by many cultures. I prioritize 1 of 1 pieces from local artists and designers and timeless everyday items to combat “fast fashion.” What advice would you give other kids that want to break into the entertainment industry? Practice recovering from failure just as you would any other skill. Shout out to Essence CEO Caroline Wanga, who said, “Allow yourself 5 fails a day.” This practice has helped me feel less scared to take risks by creating a tolerance for failure vs. trying to avoid it. Who would be your dream collaboration and why? I’m learning piano and I’d love to have a song with one of my favorite bands, Parcels. Have you ever been bullied? No. What is your advice to kids that are suffering from bullying? Someone else’s bad or hurtful behavior is not a reflection of you. Try not to let this experience deter you from choosing your authentic self and make sure you let your friends and family know how you feel. If you could talk to your future self, what would you tell her? Believing in yourself reduces stress. I spent so much time questioning myself, not having the confidence to take risks, and thinking about what other people would think–all of which caused stress as a byproduct. Once I started getting comfortable believing in myself, the stress slowly started to melt away. I wish I knew this sooner!

What are five things that you can't live without? My dog, music, a good book, Diet Coke, my family What's your life's motto or advice that you live by? Appreciate the little moments. What's your favorite color? Green What is your favorite movie? La La Land What is your favorite TV show? Rupaul’s Drag Race. Do you have any pets? If so, what kind and what's their name? I have a Golden Doodle, his name is Obi. He is named after my family’s favourite character, Obi Wan Kenobi. I also have a bird named Simon. What is your favorite place that you've traveled to? Jamaica What is your favorite food? Tacos If you could have dinner with anyone in the world, who would it be with and why? I would definitely have to go with Trixie Mattel and Katya. They are my two favourite drag queens and I would love to hear all about their experiences in the drag community. How did you get started as an content creator? I began posting consistently when the pandemic hit in 2020. I had a lot of extra time on my hands which allowed me time to create content and post. After posting consistently for five months, I started to see growth in my followers and views. Brands started to reach out and repost my content. This really pushed me to stay consistent and come up with new creative ideas. Since then I have continued to post consistently and this has resulted in my following and content growing. What is the hardest thing about doing what you do? The hardest part is dealing with online hate. Getting hundreds of comments about the way you look and people pointing out insecurities can be very damaging to mental health. Tell us about what types(s) of content you produce? I mostly produce beauty content but I also love posting about lifestyle and pop culture. Keeping “real life” and “content creator life” separated is difficult. How do you do it? I make sure to set time aside for myself, without my phone. I will make some time for self-care, this can include reading, painting, dancing, etc. Who would you say is your target audience? Teenagers with acne prone skin as well as beginners learning makeup. As a content creator, what has been your favorite video that you have posted to date. Why? One of my favourite looks I have done, was a classic glam look. The video turned out so well and the look included some of my favourite products. In addition to doing all that you do, what other things are you are passionate about? There are many things I am passionate about other than beauty. As a competitive dancer, I love exploring and experimenting with dance. I also love to direct productions inside my high school. I am also passionate about helping inside my community. I am a part of Rotary International which is a community that brings young people together to promote international understanding and peace. Can you tell us about this work and why do you feel that it is it important? I’ve done lots of volunteer work with children ages 3-9. Working with these kids is important because these are the years that they are developing their sense of self. I feel like I have a small positive part in shaping who they are. Who is your favorite actor/actress and why? My favourite actor is Timothée Chalamet. Some of my favourite films feature him, including Little Women, Lady Bird, Beautiful Boy and more. How would you describe your fashion style? I love to switch up how I dress everyday. A lot of my fashion inspiration actually comes from musicians. People like Lana Del Rey and Madison Beer have definitely impacted the way I dress. Who are some of your favorite creators that you have worked with? I loved working with Fiona Frills in collaboration with Frilliance. What advice would you give other kids that want to break into being a content creator? I would tell them that consistency is key. The number one step that has helped me grow on social media is constantly being active! Who would be your dream collaboration and why? My dream collaboration would be Rare Beauty. I have been a supporter of the brand since it started, I love the message that comes with the brand and I also just love all their products! What is one thing that nobody knows about you? I am a huge fan of Star Wars. I have a huge collection of Star Wars collectables & merchandise. Have you ever been bullied? In the past, I have been teased a bit for my social media presence but I have never been really bullied. I do constantly deal with online hate, which can be a struggle. What is your advice to kids that are suffering from bullying? Advice I would give would be to find a community or a group of people that are supportive, and accepting of who you truly are. If you could talk to your future self, what would you tell her? Don’t let the small things affect you, enjoy every minute!

Rock ‘n ’roll causes a physical response. Hips sway, feet tap, heads nods, and hearts race. On stage and on tape, Whole Damn Mess provoke a primal reaction. Packing a potent punch with timeless songcraft and unbridled energy. The Los Angeles band—Don Miggs, C. Todd Nielsen, Lawrence Katz, and Greg Hansen (along with a permanent “ensemble” of drummers and bass players)—forge an instant connection that’s as lively as their performances. Whole Damn Mess represents the union of lifelong musicians and friends with a mind-blowing collective pedigree. Don founded and led MIGGS to international popularity (in addition to collaborating with everyone from Billy Corgan to Mick Fleetwood- who happens to beat the hell out of the drums on a track), Lawrence has been the long-time guitar player for The Mighty Mighty BossTones, while C. Todd and Greg have found success in their side project Floyd Wonder. In addition, they all write and produce for film and TV, as well as upcoming and established artists. But when they come together, proverbial sparks fly. They churn out “new music with legacy sensibilities.” Proudly identifying as “a group of four guys who aren’t teenagers but still fight like it,” they approach music with a clear perspective on reality and an understanding of the challenges of maintaining a piece of yourself in the face of mounting responsibilities. In 2018, they dropped their full-length debut The Queen and the Outcast followed by the Princes Turn to Thieves EP a year later; the former detailing Don’s 12-year love affair with his wife and the latter dealing with the realities of making a life together. Having gotten that all out of their systems they began to consider what the new music would represent. Over the course of 2020, they perfected this approach. Relying on the perspectives of four singers, four musicians, and four producers, they reached the nexus of their respective talents through sessions in Los Angeles and Tampa, FL. Meanwhile, mix engineer extraordinaire Mark Needham [The Killers, Imagine Dragons] put the finishing touches on the tracks to make them “sound like a rolling train of goodness,” according to Greg. An idea that began while working on another track together, their next single “Into The Great Unknown” hinges on the interplay between these musicians as it stretches to epic heights. “That’s the product of us firing on all cylinders together,” smiles Lawrence. In the end, Whole Damn Mess will undoubtedly move you in 2023, with a release of “Into the Great Unknown” and an EP to close out the year. Action Magazine caught up with these amazing men to get to know them a lot better. Take a peek at some of their answers to our staple game of Q&A on pg. 82. Don't forget to follow them on Instagram. What are five things that you can't live without? My family/friends, my music, my journalling, water, sleep What's your life's motto or advice that you live by? Sometimes people are meant to meet just not meant to be, it’s your first life on earth and therefore mistakes will be made, lessons are to be learnt, we’re humans and 'ere learning as we go. What's your favorite color? Black, however it is not a colour but a shade. What is your favorite movie? Freedom Writers What is your favorite TV show? Friends or Scandal, I CANT PICK. Do you have any pets? If so, what kind and what's their name? No pets, but I've always wanted a dog. What is your favorite place that you've traveled to? I enjoyed Italy a lot but I think its because I’ve got family who live there too, so it just feels like home What is your favorite food? I love waffle fries. If you could have dinner with anyone in the world, who would it be with and why? Mahmoud Darwish, I love his work, his poems and work in general almost linger on my soul every time I read it and I think he’d understand me on a deeper level What made you want to start singing? Nothing really, to be honest I don’t even remember when I started singing, but I used to get called the bathroom singer by my parents all the time, so I don’t know, I guess my passion for singing in the shower. What is the most difficult thing about being a musician? There is never a routine, it’s such a hectic schedule and sometimes you have to mentally prepare yourself to make sacrifices for work but I’m forever grateful to say I do what I do because it keeps me excited when new opportunities come along. You are also a songwriter, where do you find inspiration for your music? My own personal life actually, every song I’ve ever written in the studio with the most amazing people ever, or even on my own is a story from my live that I've lived and learnt from. What do you hope people take away from your music? The fact that music is storytelling, I pour my heart and soul into it and if I can have one person relate to the emotion within my music, then that makes me happy. You have a new project,“Wings,” tell us about this project? It’s a cover of from Birdy and I just feel such a close connection with this song every time I hear it and so I wanted to release a version where I just gave my all in it. In one word, how would you describe your sound? Versatile Who is your favorite musician and why? I wouldn’t say I have a favourite simply because I see music as an art, so it's every musicans individual story that I look up to. How would you describe your fashion style? Chill, very laid back, i love a comfy vibe but I also like to dress up too depending on the occasion. What advice would you give other kids that want to break into music? Sacrifices and commitments for work will have to be made, be ready for long days of work, be ready for no days of work, be ready for a hectic schedule, be ready to experience the journey of music and most of all don’t take no for an answer when you have a goal and a vision in mind. Who would be your dream music collaboration and why? I would love to work with RYX. I feel like his music is a painted canvas full of so much emotion, creativity and soulfulness. Have you ever been bullied? I wouldn’t say I was bullied, I used to have mean comments made about me due to like my eyebags and my unibrow but these are just things that make me me and it shouldn’t be anyone else’s issue if I feel comfortable about it. What is your advice to kids that are suffering from bullying? Definitely raise and issue with them if they bother you, most of the times bullies bully because they aren’t happy with themselves. If you could talk to your future self, what would you tell her? Feel every emotion and experience that comes your way and take the risk.

What are five things that you can't live without? Don Miggs: My guitars, my sneakers, I can’t believe I’m saying this- my golf clubs, my chocolate, my wife (the kids are optional!!!) C. Todd Nielsen: My kid, Ableton & Pro Tools, Tequila, surfing, television Lawrence Katz: My Family, my friends, studio, guitars, nature Greg Hansen: Music, creativity in all its forms, a good dive bar, my family, my friends What's your life's motto or advice that you live by? Don Miggs: Go to bed tired. You will be dead longer than you’re alive so BE alive. C. Todd Nielsen: I am open and receptive to all the goodness and abundance the universe has to offer. Lawrence Katz: Don’t borrow trouble. Greg Hansen: It is only when a mosquito lands on your testicles that you realize there is always a way to solve problems without violence. What's your favorite color? Don Miggs: I’m color blind but I hear my favorite color is blue. C. Todd Nielsen: Blue Lawrence Katz: Blue Greg Hansen: Recently its been deep orange, like a sunset though not a Tic Tac. What is your favorite movie? Don Miggs: Tough one. Night Shift, Vacation, Good Will Hunting That’s one, right? C. Todd Nielsen: Apart from the raging anti-semitism in its lead actor, Braveheart is a perfect movie, ya know minus that one aforementioned detail. Lawrence Katz: Fast Times at Ridgemont High Greg Hansen: Goodfellas What is your favorite TV show? Don Miggs: Hard to beat Seinfeld, unless you’re talking Curb Your Enthusiasm, I suppose. C. Todd Nielsen: Game Of Thrones Lawrence Katz: The Masters Greg Hansen: I don’t watch TV Do you have any pets? If so, what kind and what's their name? Don Miggs: Oh, we’ve got pets. 2 dogs; Charlotte Grace and Coco Chanel. 2 birds; I forget their names but you can have them. A turtle named Tim and 2 geckos that are useless. C. Todd Nielsen: My toddler Lawrence Katz: No Greg Hansen: No What is your favorite place that you've traveled to? Don Miggs: Love traveling. Every new place has something to see from Piscataway to Paris, I can find something worth stopping for. C. Todd Nielsen: Italy is my favorite country to go to in general, but New York is best city in the world Lawrence Katz: Anywhere in Europe Greg Hansen: Rome or Vail, Colorado What is your favorite food? Don Miggs: Johns Pizza- Bleecker Street, New York City C. Todd Nielsen: In-N-Out burger Lawrence Katz: Mexican Greg Hansen: A burger and a beer from Tiny’s Hi-Dive If you could have dinner with anyone in the world, who would it be with and why? Don Miggs: I’ve had a few amazing dinners but give me Obama, Eddie Vedder, Derek Jeter and Bono and I’m sure I’d learn a thing or two. C. Todd Nielsen: I’m going Don Miggs…because you know he’s gonna pick up the check and there’s a good chance someone awesome is coming with him like Mick Fleetwood, or Billy Corgan, or John Fogerty or Greg. Lawrence Katz: What C Todd Said Greg Hansen: What Lawrence said What made you want to start singing? Don Miggs: I got grounded. Couldn’t touch anything in the room but this old guitar I never once showed any interest in. Best punishment my parents ever gave me. C. Todd Nielsen: Senior year of high school my invincible nationally ranked soccer team lost early in the state tournament and my universe crumbled. I gave up soccer which I thought was my future and picked up a guitar and started writing sad boy songs like Eddie Vedder as it was the height of grunge. Lawrence Katz: The Guitar Greg Hansen: All the bands I was in kept breaking up. What is the most difficult thing about being a musician? Don Miggs: It’s subjective. You can be an amazing artist and no one knows. In sports, you can be the biggest A- hole but if you hit a ball over a fence, no one denies you a spot on the roster. In music, if the light doesn’t hit you just right, you may never even be seen. C. Todd Nielsen: Monetizing your skills. It’s an impossible business that no one should get into unless you’re willing to do it for free for as long as it takes and still love it. That said, if you stick with it, you’ll find your niche. That’s the second hardest thing, persistence. Lawrence Katz: The commitment and the sacrifices that go along with it. Greg Hansen: If you do it right, just about every other part of your life suffers. Where do you find inspiration for your music? Don Miggs: I wake up. It’s all right there in the every day of life. C. Todd Nielsen: Weed is a good place to start. Lawrence Katz: Yes Greg Hansen: When I stop looking, there it is...it’s kind of everywhere. What do you hope people take away from your music? Don Miggs: Joy. Even if a song makes them sad, there is joy in that. I want them to celebrate being on this side of the dirt. C. Todd Nielsen: What Don said… Lawrence Katz: Inspiration. For anything. Greg Hansen: I hope they get what they need. You have a new project, “Into The Great Unknown,” tell us about this project? This new song is the first one where the 4 of us all really “leaned” into the sound. It’s a deliberate attempt at being the most “Whole Damn Mess” we could be and I think it hits all the things I love best about music and this band. Highly recommend repeat spins. In one word, how would you describe your sound? Don Miggs: Celebratory C. Todd Nielsen: What Don said!!! Lawrence Katz: Yes Greg Hansen: What C Todd said In addition to music, what other things are you are passionate about?(charitywork, volunteering, etc.) Can you tell us about this work and why do you feel that it is it important? Don Miggs: I feel like we are all here to find other people to pour ourselves into, while still doing whatever we can to be happy ourselves. I support several charities but the Innocence Project and Road Recovery are two that have my attention more frequently. I think you need to know how lucky you are every day and supporting the efforts of people just trying to achieve a base level of acceptance in the world is worthy. Lawrence Katz: Staying healthy and happy. And keeping my kid happy and healthy. Greg Hansen: I’m an aspiring philanthropist - for now I just do my best to help the artists I work with take their careers to the next level. Who is your favorite musician and why? Don Miggs: How do you top Paul McCartney, really? C. Todd Nielsen: After seeing “Get Back” I gotta go with Paul McCartney as well, but there are many. It’s fun to see what guys like Charlie Puth and Jacob Collier are doing to move the ball forward as well. Lawrence Katz: Anyone making music. It's a magic trick. I always go back to the classics. Floyd, Zep, VH, The Police. Greg Hansen: Miles Davis - He always had an amazing contribution to the never ending conversation that is music - in the late 1940’s the jazz world was obsessed with bebop, virtuoso style playing. So he pioneered cool, slower more melodic music. Then modal. Almost 20 years later in response to Woodstock, he pioneered fusion. He reminds me that to remain stylistically static is the wrong option. Listen and comment. How would you describe your fashion style? Don Miggs: Longing for a true direction!!! C. Todd Nielsen: When I do decide to put pants on, my philosophy is “more is more”. Hats, necklaces, gold teeth, you name it. Lawrence Katz: Classic Greg Hansen: I have no idea. Who are some of your favorite musicians that you have worked with? Don Miggs: I’ve recently had the honor to produce a few things for Dolly Parton and got to work with Steven Tyler. Pretty magical. Mick Fleetwood has played on WDM songs and he’s a real inspiration always. And playing music with these guys is right up there. I get to make music with people I admire and strive to impress. I’m not even the best singer in my own band. How about that?!?! C. Todd Nielsen: Honestly, my favorite people to make music with are in this band, it’s the sole reason I do it. I’ve been fortunate enough to have seen some pretty great folks in the studio back when I was assisting ranging from Jonas Brothers to Slash, Goo Goo Dolls to Demi Lovato and a bunch of folks in the pop world, so that was always fun to see how people at the top of the game work. What advice would you give other kids that want to break into music? Don Miggs: How’s your golf swing? C. Todd Nielsen: As I said above, basically don’t do it, unless you can’t NOT do it in your bones and you’re willing to die trying. Then the only advice to keep getting better and persist until it does happen. Lawrence Katz: Put the time in. Greg Hansen: All of life’s biggest rewards are on the other side of fear - try to find the thing that scares you the most and run towards it. What is one thing that nobody knows about you? Don Miggs: I’m taller than I look… C. Todd Nielsen: I’m not wearing any underwear. Lawrence Katz: I’m wearing Todd's underwear. Greg Hansen: I have unpaid parking tickets. Have you ever been bullied? Don Miggs: Yes. Not to the extent that it’s being done today but I was and I remember a distinct moment that- me standing up to this bully in a way that wasn’t going to get my butt handed to me but made him realize he needed to find someone else to pick on- may have saved me from 4 years of high school dread. I’m not saying anyone needs to do that because I don’t know what the stakes could be for someone else but Eleanor Roosevelt said, “noone can make you feel inferior without your consent” so don’t consent to their will. Choose your own. C. Todd Nielsen: I have. Lawrence and I were talking about this recently because I don’t many people really think about it, but growing up I was “othered” a lot because of my red hair. Ask any red head, especially males, and they’ll all tell you the same. It’s pretty universal but most ginger folk don’t complain too much because to have red hair you also fall into the most privileged demographic of being Caucasian. Lawrence Katz: I grew up a Jew in the South. Yes. Although I get along with most. Greg Hansen: Yes What is your advice to kids that are suffering from bullying? Don Miggs: Find someone to be your ally NOW. Go to parents, adults, and WHO CARES if people make fun of you for that. Do not tolerate it for a moment or it will fester. Now, that isn’t to say that people can be mean and that’s the real world and we HAVE to be able to deal with not being liked or not always talked about favorably. But live with honor and respect for yourself and people around you and demand that in return. Bullies are usually scared and hurt. Find out why if you can and try to contact them on the side and ask why you? What happened? I had no problem telling a bigger kid once that I wasn’t going to fight him because he would kill me and what made him think it was cool to beat up someone you know you can beat up? Made him think and I escaped with my head intact. C. Todd Nielsen: The attitude has to be “Fuck'em. Sticks and stones, words only have the power you give them.” Your worth does not come from what other people think of you, it truly comes from within, so respect yourself and hold your heard high and other people will respect that as well. Lawrence Katz: Tough one. Stay grounded in who you are as an individual. Greg Hansen: Hurt people hurt people. So whoever is bullying you is being bullied, or abused, or their dad's a drunk, or something... Just knowing that the person hurting you is most likely suffering may help make sense of it. It’s most definitely not a “you” thing. Beyond that - Tell someone you trust, Avoid whatever asshole is bullying you and find your tribe - safety in numbers… Also when it passes, and it will - do your best not to pass it on - hurt people hurt people. If you could talk to your past self, what would you tell him? Don Miggs: Nothing is as precious as you are making it out to be!!!! The thing you will miss more than all of the stuff you worried about is time and you won’t get that back so use it wisely. C. Todd Nielsen: You’re good enough, you’re smart enough, and doggonit people like you! Lawrence Katz: It's all gonna work out just fine. Greg Hansen: Don’t whiz on the electric fence.

Ryleigh Madison: My journal, Spotify, my friends, my family, and God. What's your life's motto or advice that you live by? Dustin Chapman: A piece of advice that I’ve received that I try to live by was early is on time, on time is late, and late is unacceptable. Ryleigh Madison: Just keep moving forward. What's your favorite color? Dustin Chapman: Blue! Ryleigh Madison :Purple What is your favorite movie? Dustin Chapman: My all time favorite movie is Back to the Future. Ryleigh Madison: La La Land What is your favorite TV show? Dustin Chapman: My all time favorite show would be a tie between Full House or Friends. Ryleigh Madison: The Walking Dead Do you have any pets? If so, what kind and what's their name? Dustin Chapman: An Australian Shepherd named Ruckus. Ryleigh Madison: I have 3 dogs (Layla,Jack and Lizzy) and 1 cat (Cookie). What is your favorite place that you've traveled to? Dustin Chapman: My favorite travel destination, since I was a kid, has always been Disney World. There’s just something about being there that makes me feel completely care-free. Ryleigh Madison: I love New York City! What is your favorite food? Dustin Chapman: My favorite food would be any soup from Olive Garden! Ryleigh Madison: Any kind of pasta! If you could have dinner with anyone in the world, who would it be with and why? Dustin Chapman: I would love to have dinner with Ronnie Dunn. I would love to hear his stories from the road and pick his brain on various topics in the country music industry. Ryleigh Madison: I would love to have dinner with John Mayer. He is my all time favorite male artist and I would love to talk to him about music and life in general. What made you want to start singing? Dustin Chapman: I actually joined choir in middle school and got bit by the “music bug” if you will, and that gave me the passion and confidence to start performing by myself. Ryleigh Madison: I’ve been singing since I could talk and it’s something I’ve always done. What is the most difficult thing about being a musician? Dustin Chapman: The most difficult thing about being a musician is the rejection that comes along with it. For every yes, there’s 99 no’s beforehand, but it’s also beautiful because it makes you appreciate the successes that much more! Ryleigh Madison: Personally, the hardest part for me is burnout. Being a musician is emotionally and physically taxing but worth every second. Where do you find inspiration for your music? Dustin Chapman: My inspiration for my music comes from my desire to make a difference. I want people to feel uplifted and encouraged from my music and find hope in whatever situation they’re facing. Ryleigh Madison: I would say my own life experiences fuel a majority of my musical inspiration. What do you hope people take away from your music? Dustin Chapman: I hope that people, when they listen to my music, feel like they’re not alone. I want them to know that whatever emotion they’re feeling, someone has felt that before them. I hope that they take away a feeling of hope and prosperity. Ryleigh Madison: A sense of comfort and hope! You have a new project, “Still,” tell us about this project? Yes! Our new single “Still” is definitely our most personal project yet. I first started writing this song in 2021. Ryleigh and I had recently been diagnosed with COVID, and as someone with an extremely rare disease, I didn’t know how my body would respond to the virus. I had a rough-go, but while recovering the words “be still” were laid on my heart and I began writing the first half of the song, but no matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t finish the song. I said, “When the timing is right, it’ll be revealed to me and I’ll be able to finish it.” Well, exactly a year later, Ryleigh and I were in a horrific four-vehicle car accident. Thankfully, besides concussions and bruises we were okay - that’s when I started the second verse and bridge, and ultimately finished the song. The lines “you are worthy on my worst of days and greater than my earthly” came from a place of gratefulness because during two periods of our lives where we were down and physically unwell, God was gracious and allowed us to be healed and safe from long-lasting pains. Sometimes all we can do is be still and wait for His plan to unravel, and that’s what this song talks about. In one word, how would you describe your sound? Dustin Chapman: Blended Ryleigh Madison: Harmonious In addition to music, what other things are you are passionate about? (charity work, volunteering, etc.) Can you tell us about this work and why do you feel that it is it important? Dustin Chapman: As a rare disease patient, I try to involve myself with organizations that advocate for rare disease visibility. I have worked with several organizations, such as Global Genes, by performing at various events that raise funds for rare disease research. I am passionate about this because so many individuals are struggling and raising awareness is key for us individuals with rare diseases who don’t have answers to their illnesses yet. Ryleigh Madison: I am president of my schools community service club and I am super passionate about giving back to my community. Who is your favorite musician and why? Dustin Chapman: Currently, my favorite musician is Mo Pitney. As someone who is passionate about country and Christian music, Mo inspires me because he beautifully merges and walks the line between the two. Ryleigh Madison: My favorite musician is Stevie Nicks. She has been one of the most influential musicians in my life. Her songwriting and powerful stage presence inspires me so much. She is just such a queen and a great example of a strong woman in the industry. How would you describe your fashion style? Dustin Chapman: I would describe my fashion style as your typical country singer. I love a good button-up/flannel, my jeans, and my boots. Ryleigh Madison:I have more of a Boho-style! I love wearing long and slowly clothes! Who are some of your favorite musicians that you have worked with? My favorite musician that we’ve been booked with thus far would be Jason Crabb. Jason has the most warm and inviting demeanor of anyone I’ve ever met. He welcomed everyone in and made them feel like a life-long friend. He also was very complimentary of us as musicians and offered to help us in any way he could with our music careers. He was a great guy to work with! What advice would you give other kids that want to break into music? Dustin Chapman: It’s not easy nor is it as glamorous as it may seem from the outside looking in, but it’s rewarding and if you’re truly passionate about it, you’ll never be content doing something else. Work hard, work diligently, and know your worth is found within yourself and not the opinion of others. Take the risk, be prepared to fail, but never have a backup plan. This takes thick skin, but if you’re passionate and work hard, a career in this industry is attainable. Ryleigh Madison: I would advise kids to spend time honing their craft. Whether that be songwriting, singing, an instrument or all three. This gives such a solid foundation for pursuing a career. Who would be your dream music collaboration and why? Dustin Chapman: My dream collaboration would be a duet with Mo Pitney. I think our sounds and styles are extremely similar and lyrically we tend to write from a similar place, so I think we could create something that would be very memorable and impactful. Ryleigh Madison: John Mayer or Stevie Nicks What is one thing that nobody knows about you? Dustin Chapman: One thing that nobody knows about me is that I’m actually extremely critical of myself, so pursuing my career in music has been a challenge because if something doesn’t go as planned, I hyperfixate on what I’ve done wrong. So it’s been healing for me to progress in my music career because I’ve had to learn to let go and know that I’m meant to do this and that things aren’t always going to go as planned, and that’s okay. Ryleigh Madison: I am a music nerd! I listen to so many different genres and am obsessed with the little intricacies. Have you ever been bullied? Dustin Chapman: I definitely have been bullied. Particularly in my middle school years as I was the outlier – the guy in choir, overweight, not as social or confident in myself as I am now, so I was an easy target for bullies back then. Ryleigh Madison: Oh yes!I was heavily bullied when I was younger. I remember that being a very difficult part of my childhood, but it truly helped me become strong. What is your advice to kids that are suffering from bullying? Dustin Chapman: It’s okay to tell someone. Don’t be afraid to speak up and know that you’re not alone. You will find your people and things will get better. Ryleigh Madison: I would say try to never take bully’s actions personally. I know this is way easier said than done. Most of the time, the person bullying you is extremely hurt on the inside and just wants to project that hurt onto someone else. If you could talk to your future self, what would you tell him/her? Dustin Chapman: If I could talk to my future self, I would ask him did he stop and take it all in? Each milestone/moment that this journey took him on, did he really let himself enjoy it or was he too focused on the next thing? Ryleigh Madison: I would ask her if she has forged her own path. I would also tell her how proud I was of her, regardless of where she is in life.

What are five things that you can't live without? My dog, Sunny, my family, my friends, music, good food What's your life's motto or advice that you live by? If it's meant for you then it won't pass you by. What's your favorite color? Blue What is your favorite movie? I love the classics, I can't really choose one in particular. What is your favorite TV show? Friends Do you have any pets? If so, what kind and what's their name? Yes, my dog, Sunny. He's a little Cockapoo and he comes everywhere with me. What is your favorite place that you've traveled to? I love traveling, and I've been to some incredible places. New York is always fun. What is your favorite food? I try to eat as healthy as possible but I definitely have a weakness for carbs. If you could have dinner with anyone in the world, who would it be with and why? It'd probably Dolly Parton, she’s the queen I would love to sit and talk about life with her. What made you want to start singing? I've always had a passion for singing and I've been on stage since I was 4. For me, this was all I was ever going to do for a living. What is the most difficult thing about being a musician? I think it's probably harder than it's ever been. Just because we need to be across so much now. It's not just singing and writing anymore. We have to be content creators, and work 24/7 to build a "brand". That's probably the hardest part for me. Just the time we have to spend on social platforms. I love connecting with my fans, but being online so much can be difficult. Where do you find inspiration for your music? Just real life. All of my songs come from personal experience. Whether that be from my own life, and the lives of those around me. They're always based in reality and from the things I've seen or experienced. What do you hope people take away from your music? I just hope they feel seen and validated. It's easy to feel like you're the only one who feels a certain way. I hope to create a space where people can be their truest selves. You have a new project, “Blue Hour,” tell us about this project? This is my favourite body of work yet. I think it's my best too. This project came from a dark period in my life and the songs were cathartic to write. It's a powerful record and I'm so proud of how it's turned out. In one word, how would you describe your sound? Awesome, lol In addition to music, what other things are you are passionate about? (charity work, volunteering, etc.) Can you tell us about this work and why do you feel that it is it important? I have my own non-profit I Know A Woman which focuses on standardising mental health access within in the industry. I'm extremely passionate about mental health and believe we should all have easy access to resources to help us. Who is your favorite musician and why? I love people like Chris Stapleton, Billy Joel, Dolly Parton, Tupac, Shania Twain… Just artists who know how to tell stories. How would you describe your fashion style? I try to dress in outfits that make me feel confident. I wouldn't say I have a specific style really. I like variation and that comes across, I think. Who are some of your favorite musicians that you have worked with? I've been lucky to work with some amazing people. It's always fun to work with artist like Kylie Minogue, Bryan Adams, Breland as they're so varied in their styles and are genuinely good people What advice would you give other kids that want to break into music? Just keep going. You're going to get way more no's than yes's but don't give up. This industry is extremely difficult but it's also amazing. Surround yourself with good people and remember why you started. Who would be your dream music collaboration and why? It'd have to be someone Shania Twain or maybe Miley Cyrus? Chris Stapleton, I have so many tbh. What is one thing that nobody knows about you? Probably that I'm more introverted than I come across online. I think it's important to take time for yourself too. Otherwise it's easy to burn out. Have you ever been bullied? I wouldn't say bullied perse, but there was definitely some name calling growing up as I'm a Gypsy. But I feel like I handled it and it never got to a really bad place. What is your advice to kids that are suffering from bullying? Talk to someone you trust. It's never okay for someone to bully you, and there's never an excuse for it. Most likely the bully is going through something at home, but that doesn't mean they should be given a free pass. If you could talk to your future self, what would you tell her? Don't give up on your dreams. It's going to be difficult at times. But it'll be so worth it. Just keep going.

Born and Raised in Georgia, Grant Brown’s journey into country music was something he dreamt of from a young age. As a child, Grant was captivated by the sounds of country legends like Brooks and Dunn, Kenny Chesney, Rascal Flatts and Brad Paisley, and he drew inspiration from the storytelling prowess of these icons. His deep-rooted passion for the genre led him to pick up a guitar and start writing his own songs. And whether it was singing in his church’s choir or playing in his college band, he loved the feeling he got when he was in front of an audience. In 2017, Grant auditioned for NBC’s The Voice and made it to the final audition round before being cut. This experience turned out to be a blessing in disguise as he was inspired to really focus on honing his craft. By 2019, he was ready to get back out there and auditioned for American Idol where he received the coveted golden ticket! While his journey didn’t continue, he made some incredible connections and is grateful for the experience. Over the years, Grant’s appreciation for music has become his own inspiration. Artists like Dermot Kennedy, Mike. and Thomas Wesley showed Grant that going outside the box and telling your story your own way is okay. Grant’s breakthrough moment came with the release of his debut single, “Low,” which showcases his smooth, soulful vocals mixed with a southern charm that’s unmistakable. Music has become an escape for Grant and it’s something he hopes rings true for his listeners. “I want to make music that makes you feel something. Whether it’s a happy dance song or something deep and emotional, I just want it to be able to reach people where they are and make them feel something.” With new music on the horizon, it’s only a matter of time before he’s forged his own legacy like the ones he admires so much. Action Magazine had the extreme pleasure to catch up with this amazing talent to get to know him better and we are extremely glad that we did! Check out his interview and don’t forget to follow him on Instagram. You don't want to miss a minute of this rising star!
What are five things that you can't live without? Guitar, hat, my songbook, a Deep Eddy’s Lemon, guitar pick What's your life's motto or advice that you live by? Work hard and be nice to people. What's your favorite color? Blue What is your favorite movie? Remember The Titans What is your favorite TV show? Vikings Do you have any pets? If so, what kind and what's their name? Not currently - but hopefully soon! What is your favorite place that you've traveled to? Oregon or Colorado What is your favorite food? Philly Cheesesteak, Egg Rolls If you could have dinner with anyone in the world, who would it be with and why? I think I would want to have dinner with Mike. I’ve listened to his podcast a lot, and I think we would have a lot to talk about. I can easily relate to him about sports and music. But the coolest thing I think he talks about is journey with spiritual growth and living a happy and fulfilling life- all things I’d love to achieve. What made you want to start singing? I’ve always enjoyed being in front of crowd of people performing. As an adult, music has become a release for me. What is the most difficult thing about being a musician? Taking a simple thought and turning it into a song. Finding a way to say something that hasn’t been said before. Where do you find inspiration for your music? Anytime I'm out on walk or a hike, I get inspired to write. I take a lot from relationships I’ve been involved with or those around me as well. What do you hope people take away from your music? I just kind of want them to feel something. Whether its a happy dance song or something emotional, just something they can relate too somehow. You have a new project,“Low,” tell us about this project? My friend Sierra Annie had sent me them demo and as soon as I heard the melody of this song, I was immediately drawn to it. The demo was pretty rough so I also loved that I could bring my own flair and build out the song to fit me. In one word, how would you describe your sound? Energetic In addition to music, what other things are you are passionate about? (charity work, volunteering, etc.) Can you tell us about this work and why do you feel that it is it important? I’m super passionate about keeping my circle close to me. My family and friends are my lifeline and I love sharing life with them. Clemson Football is another huge thing for me. Three generations of my family went there so it’s a special place for me. My dad was on the national championship team in '81, too! Who is your favorite musician and why? Probably Dermot Kennedy. I really like how he integrates Pop and Folk songs together with the instrumentation. How would you describe your fashion style? Casual, Comfortable Who are some of your favorite musicians that you have worked with? Jacob Frish produced Lowand we had a really great time with that. He really understands my sound and was great to work. We had a lot of fun but also took the time to get the details right. What advice would you give other kids that want to break into music? Just do it. It’s very easy to get caught in the hesitation of not knowing what to do. If you just pick up your guitar and work on your craft, you’ll always be going in the right direction. Who would be your dream music collaboration and why? Mike. (Stud) I really like his sound and his energy. Also Thomas Westley (Diplo) would be electric. What is one thing that nobody knows about you? Remember that old Disney Channel movie “Luck of the Irish” - once I watched I was hooked and soon after joined a competitive Irish dance team. Have you ever been bullied? Yeah, I think everyone has to a point unfortunately. I had some learning disabilities and was separated for part of the school day, so kids liked to make fun of me for that. What is your advice to kids that are suffering from bullying? Find something you love and focus your energy in to it. The kids that are bullies will eventually start to show why they were bullying you in the first place and have to deal with it. So I’d just say find something you’re passionate about and focus all those feelings you’re having into something that will become a positive part of your life. If you could talk to your future self, what would you tell him? No matter what’s going on in life, remember to be grateful for everything you get and always try to have fun. You worked hard to get here and you’re where you’re supposed to be; don’t forget that.

What are five things that you can't live without? Water bottle, phone, music, car, Lip Balm What's your life's motto or advice that you live by? Make the most of everything and go for what you want in life. Don’t be afraid to start something new or look silly. What's your favorite color? Aqua What is your favorite movie? Surf’s Up What is your favorite TV show? How I Met Your Mother Do you have any pets? If so, what kind and what's their name? Chloe she is a Spoodle. What is your favorite place that you've traveled to? Japan, Tokyo What is your favorite food? Tacos If you could have dinner with anyone in the world, who would it be with and why? Radhi Devlukia - Shetty - I find her so inspiring and such a knowledgeable human and business woman through her creative passions. I would love to learn things from her. She seems like she is such a warm, genuine person who shares similar values to me on health, mindset and spiritual lifestyle. You are a multi-hyphenated entertainer. Let’s start with modeling. How did you get started modeling? I got into modelling through dancing and basically approached it the same way. I had an idea that I wanted to model and then I jumped into the deep end and went for it! I started practicing posing and using my performance knowledge to evoke different emotions, characters, expressions, poses and shapes. I also would YouTube tips. I applied for TFP jobs until I got myself a little bit of a portfolio and then used those photos to start applying for small freelance jobs. While I did this, I also kept up my presence on my Instagram and conceptualising my own shoots as a creative outlet and to promote myself. It started to snowball into some modelling jobs and it complimented my dancing gig lifestyle perfectly. Sometimes crossing over each other on jobs, while making relationships with different companies and agencies I worked for. What is the hardest thing about being a model? What has been the easiest thing about being a model? The hardest was in the beginning letting go of that mindset of feeling silly, unconfident or upset when you look at an image that you thought was going to look good and it didn’t. This used to mess with my head and my self confidence. That was until I learnt to let go of this and experiment and know that 1000 photos were going to be taken in a shoot and only maybe 3 might be used. This lowered my anxiety and I began to fully commit to whatever I was trying and trust myself. I would take mental note of what I was thinking and feeling when certain photos looked good or didn’t look good and also took note of certain angles I liked and didn’t like. I also learnt to love myself more and as I let go of all this I also became more confident, which only improved my photos! As a model, what has been your favorite brand to work with so far and why? Pearls and Roses. I did a shoot earlier this year for a boutique wedding dress company. Her dresses and outfits were amazing and we had such a beautiful set. Everyone was lovely, we were well looked after and I even got to roller-skate in the wedding dresses in the photos! I couldn’t have asked for a more fun day! Two of my photos also got put in Vogue Australia in the Bridal section! You are also a dancer. How did you get started dancing? Technically it was the memories dancing in the living room with my dad when I was a toddler. However Step Up 2 is what made me want to dance and learn Hip Hop/Street Styles when I was about 15. I then looked for Dance Schools in my area and found one with a crew of Breakdancers who also helped run the hip hop classes - these guys later became my friends. This school unfortunately wasn't open for long and then I found another class that ended up putting on a professional cabaret show which is where I had my first dance job. It was from here that I went on to learn all styles at three full time dance schools over the next 2.5 years which simultaneously led me into the industry. Since then I have done over 450 gigs! I have performed/modelled/danced for big brands, events and artists such as Red Bull, Pearls and Roses, Buttnaked Skinfood, Harley Davison, 7 Eleven, Ghanda Clothing, The Queens Slipper, The Grand Prix, Australian Open, Salaam Khan, Sofie Tukker and many more! What is your favorite genre of of music to dance to and why? That is a hard question, I love everything! From Salsa and Bachata to Brazilian samba to Hip Hop, R&B etc. I just love all music and the more ways I can learn to move my body to express to it the better! In addition to dancing and modeling, you are also a rollerskater and fire twirler. Tell us how you got started doing both of these! I’m only realising how many extra skills I have taken up now, reading these questions (laughing). Basically, I get excited by learning new things so I put my hand up whenever there is an opportunity, I take it, I run with it and if I enjoy it, I keep going with it. Rollerskating I fell into - quite literally there were a lot of falls at the start. I was introduced into it through a dance company (Fresh Creative Entertainment) I worked for that needed roller skaters so I jumped in and went for it. It wasn’t for a couple years later that I fell in love with it through just jamming to fun disco and funk music and grooving. Fire was a bit of a fear I wanted to face, it sounded cool and I wanted to tick it off the bucket list. So while I had all this free time to kill on movie sets in India I decided make my own poi and train moves, with fire being the ultimate goal! Once I had learnt poi with fire I found myself learning a whole lot of other fire props that complemented each other like fans, palms and a staff! In addition to all that you are doing, what other things are you are passionate about? (charity work, volunteering, etc.) Can you tell us about this work and why do you feel that it is it important? I am really passionate about health and mindset. They both intertwine and they both are something that we all are effected by and if we can work on them as best as we can and help others to also do this as well - this is what can make our dreams become possible and a reality. I want to inspire people to believe in themselves and their goals, even the ones they don’t think are possible and then go out and do it. Without valuing your health and mindset, however these goals may stay out of reach. Therefor conversations about these three topics are my favourite and I love to help people switch their thinking from impossible to possible. Who is your favorite actor/actress and why? Georgia Chara is an amazing Australian actress and also happens to be one of my best friends! She is a humble strong woman who is full of energy and life and is like a big sister to me! How would you describe your fashion style? All over the place (laughs). I go off what my mood is, sometimes that is comfy old trackies and a flano and other time I like to dress bold, edgy, yet classy. I go through periods of wanting to look more feminine and also sometimes more masculine. I would say natural and neutral colors have a place in my wardrobe always. Who are some of your favorite fellow models that you have worked with? One of my best friends Ruth Hedley from England we did a shoot together in India. She looked stunning and we had a lot fun on the job together. What advice would you give other kids that want to break into the entertainment industry? Even if the voice is only small, but it wants you to follow your dreams - listen to it. This voice will keep growing as you listen to it and more will become possible the more you follow it. Always be you, work hard and trust in yourself. Try your best to not compare yourselves to others as we all have different journeys. Sometimes the most random job could lead you to meeting someone who books you on your dream job, so never pass up an opportunity. Who would be your dream collaboration and why? It would be very cool to do a shoot with Nike combining dance and modelling or a swimsuit shoot on a tropical island with Jay Alvalrez and a brand like Tiger Lily - that would be the dream! What is one thing that nobody knows about you? There isn’t a lot no-one knows about me as I am a pretty open book! But I love big long warm hugs from the important people in my life. Have you ever been bullied? I have been very fortunate I don’t think I have been bullied, however I have over years had a pattern of people coming into my life in authoritative or dominant positions that have definitely walked over me or unfortunately emotionally manipulated me.It was from this I had to learn to be stronger in myself and set boundaries and be ok with not everyone liking me. This was a hard life lesson for me to learn and is something I still struggle with. Up until a week ago, I hadn’t really been bullied before, but I did a job for a dance trend video for a big brand in Australia that was posted on Instagram and there were a whole bunch of haters that ganged up cyberbullying with nasty comments. Luckily, I’m at a stage in life that I am pretty centred; however, I did stay up all night reading every comment. I also had found out someone that night I knew had died in a car accident. I wanted to tell these people this, but knew I couldn’t comment anything as it was a job and would be unprofessional. In some ways the unfortunate event helped me by putting my priorities in place and not worrying about people who don’t matter to me’s comments. I also was grateful for friends who wrote beautiful things and stuck up for me. I was able to look at the positives in the situation and flip my thoughts that were hurting me. For example, I may have had 50 hate comments but the video had 209000 views and 50 people was a very small fraction of this. I also reflected on the type of person who would go out of their way to put someone who they don’t know down for no reason and realised that these kind of people don’t matter to me anyway. What is your advice to kids that are suffering from bullying? Believe in you, never let someone say to you that you are not valuable or important. We are all important and deserve to be treated with love and respect. Remember that anyone who is bullying you can’t be in a right or happy state of mind if they are bullying you. Keep true to yourself and know that being a good person will always eventually trump these people. These people will eventually unravel and you will become stronger, which will push you to do amazing things with your life - a life full of love that you deserve. Use your pains as fuel to transform your life for the better. If you could talk to your future self, what would you tell her? Whatever you have achieved, learnt or experienced I am proud of you. I value you and you are loved. You are special and significant and forever learning. You are fun, kind and a well loved human being.

Rival Waves is a band from Austin, Texas, fusing elements of alternative, hardcore, classic rock and grunge, to craft powerful anthems wrapped in a vibrant, driving punk intensity. With a unique aesthetic marrying the musical snarl of early Foo Fighters, the earnest, politically-charged lyricism of The Clash, and the distortion-soaked, indie sensibilities of Cloud Nothings, the band’s cathartic energy and lyrical volition serve to bridge the emotional connection between art and audience. Rival Waves was formed out of a studio project by singer/songwriter Joel De La Garza that yielded 2018’s EPTRANSDUCER. De La Garza soon joined forces with guitarist duo Marc Schulz and Erik Salinas to create a more collaborative and prolific band dynamic. The addition of Paul Piñonon drums and David McLeodon bass has seen Rival Waves continue to evolve their sound into a melodic, heartfelt, and dangerous sonic electricity that has become their trademark. The band has been organically fostering its fanbase and refining its sound on some of the premiere stages across Austin’s live music scene - including venues like Stubb’s, Mohawk, Empire Control Room and 3TEN at ACL Live. They’ve performed alongside international touring acts like Blue October, Bush, Okilly Dokilly, Jawbox, and King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard, and have shared stages with Austin’s marquee artists. In late 2019, Rival Waves teamed up with Grammy-nominated producer Chris “Frenchie” Smith (Jet,…Trail of Dead, Gary Clark Jr.) to record its debut LP, "A Meaningless Chaos". Tracked and mixed at The Bubble Recording Studios in Austin, the album serves as an 11-track manifesto on overcoming the madness engulfing our lives over the last few years. The songs capture a live, raw immediacy that the times, and the album’s larger theme, reflect. The result is a powerfully purposeful collection of songs touching on the universal themes of love, loss, anger, fear, and, ultimately, release. While a worldwide pandemic altered plans for the album’s initial release plans, much of the “meaningless chaos” has only intensified. As a result, the album serves as a touch point of these modern days we’re all living through. "A Meaningless Chaos" was released worldwide on August 4, 2023, and the band celebrated its release by headlining a hometown album release show at 3TEN at ACL Live on August 5th. The digital album features 11 songs, with three additional tracks exclusively available on the 2LP Deluxe Vinyl Edition. Action Magazine had the extreme pleasure to catch up with this phenomenal band to get to know them better and we are so glad that we did! Check out their interview and don’t forget to follow them on Instagram. You don't want to miss a minute of this journey!

What are five things that you can't live without? Marc Schulz: Iced tea, a guitar, cookies, more iced tea, constant validation from others Joel De La Garza: A guitar, a smartphone, loved ones, and the office (US) Erik Salinas: Guitar, music, healthy friendships, someone to talk to, books What's your life's motto or advice that you live by? Marc Schulz: We should be constantly reminded what we owe in return for what we have.- Eleanor Roosevelt Joel De La Garza: You can’t be neutral on a moving train. - Howard Zinn Erik Salinas: Never let fear decide your fate. -Aaron Bruno What's your favorite color? Marc Schulz: Blue Joel De La Garza: Cobalt Blue Erik Salinas: Black What is your favorite movie? Marc Schulz: Scott Pilgrim vs. the World Joel De La Garza: The Godfather Erik Salinas: John Wick 1 What is your favorite TV show? Marc Schulz: Currently The Bear. Probably The Sopranos all-time Joel De La Garza: Currently, it is Only Murders in the Building. My all-time favorite would be Saturday Night Live. Erik Salinas: Band of Brothers Do you have any pets? If so, what kind and what's their name? Marc Schulz: Old doggo “Rigby” Joel De La Garza: Two adopted pups: “Izzie” and “Buttercup” Erik Salinas: 2 Cats: ”Eos” & “Maya” What is your favorite place that you've traveled to? Marc Schulz: Tokyo, Japan Joel De La Garza: Doheny Beach, Dana Point, CA Erik Salinas: Toronto, Canada What is your favorite food? Marc Schulz: Cabo Bobs Joel De La Garza: Hellboy Pizza from Paulie Gee’s, Backyard-grilled fajitas Erik Salinas: Basmati Rice Dave McLeod: The Taco, breakfast, lunch and dinner! If you could have dinner with anyone in the world, who would it be with and why? Marc Schulz: Paul McCartney, cause he’s a freaking Beatle. Joel De La Garza: McCartney would be dope. But breaking bread with Bono or Robert De Niro would be pretty epic, too. Honestly, most people I would choose are no longer living. Erik Salinas: Keanu Reeves, to have a humbling conversation about his outlook on life and how he managed to overcome the world of Hollywood. What made you want to start singing/playing? Marc Schulz: Kurt Cobain Joel De La Garza: John Lennon & Paul McCartney Erik Salinas: 80’s hair metal and the desire for a life of sex & rock'n'roll. I always could do without the drug part. Dave McLeod: When I first heard the bass line in a song by Otis Redding called, "(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay", I was probably 8-years-old at the time. What is the most difficult thing about being a musician? Marc Schulz: Imposter syndrome and constantly feeling inadequate. Joel De La Garza: The constant struggle of viewing music creation as both a gift from something “above” and a craft to be woodshedded/perfected. I believe it to be the former, but the latter keeps me always writing - always trying to build that muscle. Erik Salinas: The fact that you have to deal with 3-4 relationships at the same time. Or having to run a business at the same time as creating music. Dave McLeod: It's difficult to make a living playing music, especially these days. If you play in a cover band, you have a better chance of making a living, week to week. However, you will never really make it unless you create and play your own music. That said, if you do that, you may not earn enough to live. So, deciding which way to go can be difficult. I've built a career outside of music that gives me the freedom to play the bass with a variety of artists around town, without having to worry about how or if this gig is going to help me pay some bills. This was difficult though as I had to sacrifice playing time to devote time to an entirely different career. I kept playing regardless. Where do you find inspiration for your music? Marc Schulz :Observing the excellence of others. Joel De La Garza: I read the news today…oh boy. Erik Salinas: At the end of the day, it’s what I can always go to when life throws a lemon. Dave McLeod: From other players, there are so many great bass players in the world, and they all have something unique about them. There is always something new to learn and with the advances in online technology, there is a never-ending supply of players and genres to draw from. What do you hope people take away from your music? Marc Schulz: Anything that helps them feel seen or understood. Joel De La Garza: The energy to wake up every day and fight back against the madness of the world. Erik Salinas: That it makes them feel a certain way that they can always reflect on. A memory triggered by a song that makes them feel good inside. You have a new project, “A Meaningless Chaos,” tell us about this project? "A Meaningless Chaos is a 11-track manifesto on overcoming the madness that has surrounded the world, and the band, since 2016. The album is a microcosm of the times in which it was written and recorded. It confronts many topics that society has found itself grappling with: human rights, political corruption, the continued rise of fascism, bigotry, racism and misogyny, the immense universal grief of losing loved ones, and the mental fatigue and anxiety of dealing with all of it every day. The album captures a live, raw immediacy that the times, and the album’s themes, reflect. We recorded and mixed the album with Chris “Frenchie” Smith at The Bubble Recording Studio in Austin, Texas, as the world was entering what would become a nearly two-year hiatus from anything remotely normal. The band, had come off of a series of incendiary performances that had the songs airtight and ready to track. That preparation, along with the collaborative, take-no-prisoners approach brought by everyone involved with the sessions provides the album with a palpable energy. I can’t talk about this record without talking about the state we find ourselves in today - both macro and micro. The current state of our government, the cruelty of the previous administration (and the subsequent fallout of all that), a few of us in the band losing a parent, the evolution and cohesion of the band, even the pandemic of the last three years…it was all informing this record. Whether we knew it or not. There are so many things that, as we were putting the album together for release, we looked back and thought, ‘Oh wow…how freakishly prophetic was all this doom and gloom?’ In reality, it’s just us trying to deal with the state of the world, the state of our lives within it and figuring out what we can do to keep from losing who we are in the process. This record is about making a choice – taking a stand. Will we succumb to all the meaningless chaos that surrounds us, or will we wake up every day and fight to keep the wolves at bay? The result is a powerfully purposeful collection of songs around the universal themes of love, loss, anger, fear, and, ultimately, release. In one word, how would you describe your sound? Marc Schulz: Tragic Joel De La Garza: Hopeful Erik Salinas: Echos Dave McLeod: Pure In addition to music, what other things are you passionate about? (charity work, volunteering, etc.) Can you tell us about this work and why do you feel that it is it important? Marc Schulz: I try to be a good leader in all that I do. Even with limited reach, helping build people’s communities and confidence can make the world better in the smallest way. Joel De La Garza: I am passionate about being helpful. One of my biggest fears is being in the way. So whether it means bringing people together to accomplish great things or adding an idea to a song that ends up taking the collective vision further, I simply try to aim to be of service to things bigger than myself. Erik Salinas: Relationships between people. Sometimes when I, of my friends, experience a problem within a relationship I will look to how we can overcome and adapt to any future relationships that we can cultivate and thrive. If necessary I look within myself and if I can learn from a mistake I will make the necessary change. Helping people see. My day job is selling & making glasses. I’ve been in the industry for 23+ years and I’ve learned quite a bit honing my craft within my company is a foundation that I can utilize my skillset to give back to a community of people who struggle with access to Eyecare. Who is your favorite musician and why? Marc Schulz: At the moment, Jeff Tweedy. Great songwriting, adventurous with sounds, and his "A Ghost Is Born-era" guitar work is an expressive benchmark I can only dream of reaching. Joel De La Garza: A loaded question! I don’t know that I can single out a favorite musician. That said, I’ve recently been very impressed by the output Jason Isbell has had since 2013’s Southeastern. His lyrical storytelling borders on the Springsteen-esque, but with an almost deeper fire that is uniquely his. Uniquely Southern…and defiantly rock 'n’ roll. Erik Salinas: The Edge. I’ve always been interested in how he tastefully uses delay and have tried to adopt that into how I create music. Dave McLeod: Miles Davis because he never stopped evolving. How would you describe your fashion style? Marc Schulz: Aspirationally mid. Joel De La Garza: Minimal American Grunge. (Black shirts & jeans) Erik Salinas: Everything in my closet is black. Who are some of your favorite musicians that you have worked with? Marc Schulz: My bros in Rival Waves. Joel De La Garza: In addition to this very cool group of humans I consider myself lucky to push air around with, I was lucky to have kicked this project off by recording with some accomplished musicians including Rock and Roll Hall of Fame drummer Jack Irons (Red Hot Chili Peppers, Pearl Jam), Satnam Ramgotra (Hans Zimmer Orchestra, Nikka Costa), Nick Lashley (Alanis Morrisette), Teddy Kumpel (Joe Jackson, Feist), Martyn Lenoble (Porno for Pyros), and Scott Koziol (Linkin Park). Erik Salinas: Members of Firekills, Rival Waves, Element-9, The Riot Scene, & Amid The Crash. These have been my band of brothers who have been integral parts of my musical journey. Dave McLeod :My childhood friend, Avrel Seale, and I have a special musical connection that makes working with him a breeze. My younger brother, John McLeod is also a joy to play music with and the fact that we are brothers makes it easy. All of my"brothers and sisters in bands" over the years are favorites as well. There is something very special that happens when you play music live with other players. I also especially enjoy locking in with drummers. The foundation of any band is the bass and drums so that relationship has to be tight. What advice would you give other kids who want to break into music? Marc Schulz: Play whatever you want, as much as you can. Do it for you. Joel De La Garza: Keep playing. Keep writing. Make mistakes. Appreciate getting paid but be willing to play for free until you find your audience. Create the music you want to hear. Release it how you want. Don’t listen to media, algorithms, gatekeepers, or critics. There are no rules and no one knows how this industry works. Have fun pushing air with your friends. Erik Salinas: Don’t. Be careful what you wish for. Dave McLeod: Play your instrument a lot! I mean, all the time. If you view playing as a chore, then you're in the wrong business. Your playing will speak for itself. Play all styles and be open to all kinds of music, play along with whatever you are doing, watching TV, or listening to the radio. I even play along to our alarm clocks in the house, they make good metronomes. Meet and play with as many musicians as you can. The only way to"break"into music is to build strong relationships. Master your instrument, be confident in yourself, be on time, don't overplay, listen, and the most important thing of all is to get along with others. The more you play the better you will become and like I said earlier, your playing will speak for itself, so you need to always be on the lookout for opportunities to play. The more opportunities you have, the more experience you will get, the more you will play live, the more people will see you, and the more likely you will get called for the next gig. It's like a domino effect, one thing leads to the next. Don't give up and just keep moving forward! I've been playing for 40-plus years and am just now starting to catch a few "breaks" after all those years...I've been playing the entire time, becoming a better musician along the way. Who would be your dream music collaboration and why? Marc Schulz: I’m totally down to be the fourth backup guitar player on The Cure’s 50th Anniversary tour. Joel De La Garza: I threw my name in the mix to join the Foo Fighters as their new drummer. However, after seeing them a few times this Fall, I think they made the right decision with Josh Freese. Looks like I’ll just continue to keep my eyes out for that Pearl Jam/Rival Waves collaboration in ’24. Erik Salinas: Myself and Radiohead. Ever since Ok Computer came out I’ve dreamt of a day where I could collaborate with those guys and create art. What is one thing that nobody knows about you? Marc Schulz: I’m a huge Beatles fan…feels good to finally get that off my chest. Joel De La Garza: I have an Economics degree from the University of Texas at Austin. Looks really nice on the wall - have never purposefully used it in my career in or out of music. Erik Salinas: Ha! You almost got me on that one. Have you ever been bullied? Marc Schulz: Definitely. Joel De La Garza: Indeed. Erik Salinas: In grade school ,I’d wear a Texas A&M shirt, and boy the ’80s & ‘90s in Austin, Texas could be rough. Thankfully I was never physically bullied. What is your advice to kids who are suffering from bullying? Marc Schulz: As a kid, it's hard to understand that so often being bullied isn't about something that's wrong with you, it's about something up with the bully. Be strong, be confident, and find your people... they are out there no matter who you are. But also be empathetic.Use your strength to turn bad energy into good. Joel De La Garza: I think Marc deftly stated the best advice I could give. To those being bullied: know who you are, understand your value, and find your community. To those bullying: It’s a simple commandment to live by - don’t be an asshole. Erik Salinas: Hang in there. Find a band of brothers, a tribe that you can talk to. Never bottle it up inside and think you have the solution without advice from an adult that you respect and fuck social media. If you could talk to your future self, what would you tell him? Marc Schulz: Do it anyway! So what if you've never tried it?So what if you're not the best at it? If it's interesting, try it. If you like it, keep going. Put in the effort and you'll get better. Joel De La Garza: It won’t always be easy. In fact, it’s likely going to get much harder. Stick around and stick it out. It’ll all be worth it in the long run. I promise. Erik Salinas: Hey bro, I didn’t listen to that inner voice and I ended up trying the shrimp and drinking way too much tequila. You’ll be feeling it soon.

What are five things that you can't live without? Ryan Fuson: Family, friends, music, food and movies Kyle Hager: My wife, my daughter, my friends, music, Miami Dolphins What's your life's motto or advice that you live by? Ryan Fuson: my grandpa used to always say, if someone can do it, so can you, I’d say I try to live life that way. Kyle Hager: Believe in everything or nothing. There are only 2 options. What's your favorite color? Ryan Fuson: Yellow Kyle Hager: Green What is your favorite movie? Ryan Fuson: This is a tough one, we had a rare morning off this tour and I went to see Killer of the Flower Moon and I really loved it. So for now I’ll say that. Kyle Hager: Coneheads What is your favorite TV show? Ryan Fuson: Community! We have a community Easter egg on this album. Kyle Hager: Grand Designs Do you have any pets? If so, what kind and what's their name? Ryan Fuson: I have a doggo named Neb. He’s a good dude. Kyle Hager: Our family cat is named Margaret Yang, but we usually call her Capoons or Shawoonseens. What is your favorite place that you've traveled to? Ryan Fuson: Mexico City is probably my favorite city in the world. Kyle Hager: Also Mexico City What is your favorite food? Ryan Fuson: Another tough one. If I have to choose one I’d go Mexican. Kyle Hager: Definitely Mexican. Red enchiladas in El Paso are amazing. If you could have dinner with anyone in the world, who would it be with and why? Ryan Fuson: Well I will never get the chance but it would have been great to eat with Anthony Bourdain. Kyle Hager: I would love to go for tacos with Lalo Villar. What made you want to start singing? Ryan Fuson: I think I have just always liked singing and making dumb little songs about everyday life things. Kyle Hager: My mom What is the most difficult thing about being a musician? Ryan Fuson: Having to listen to bands like the Beatles knowing you’ll never be as good. Kyle Hager: Finding time to work and be creative. Where do you find inspiration for your music? Ryan Fuson: Who knows, it just shows up one day. Kyle Hager: The experiences I’ve had with my boys in the band, my anxieties, and my love for my family. What do you hope people take away from your music? Ryan Fuson: I hope it gives people some Joy. Kyle Hager: I hope people feel like they can relate to us and find some kind of intimate connection. You have a new project,“The Five Cups,” tell us about this project? Well, it’s a tarot card. I’d say we wanted to make songs that could be very quiet and then become very loud. We just wanted to write music with a large dynamic range. In addition to music, what other things are you are passionate about? (charity work, volunteering, etc.) Can you tell us about this work and why do you feel that it is it important? Ryan Fuson: In addition to music I love cooking, reading, watching movies and wood working. I also work on film sets building the sets. I guess it’s my main day job. Kyle Hager: My most important job is being a good dad for my daughter and husband to my wife. I love getting to see the world in new ways through my little girl’s eyes and revisiting my own childhood to help relate to her. Who is your favorite musician and why? Ryan Fuson: John Lennon and Yoko Ono. I’ve always loved them and I think they were both at their peak making music together. Kyle Hager: Brian Wilson is a genius. His knack for melody is unmatched. How would you describe your fashion style? Ryan Fuson: Probably formal Hobo Kyle Hager: Modern flannel Who are some of your favorite musicians that you have worked with? Ryan Fuson: On this last record we worked with Estrella del Sol and Lorelle meets of the Obsolete. We also worked with members of Froth and our buddy Tomas Dolas. All are amazing musicians and made our songs a million times better. Breaking into music and the music industry are two different things, I’d suggest focusing on just the music part and just play what makes you happy and have fun. Kyle Hager: Same as Ryan, it was a pleasure to work with all of the above mentioned. I’d say playing music with people you love is more important than playing with people who are good musicians. We’ve been lucky and found both. Who would be your dream music collaboration and why? Ryan Fuson: Well at this very moment we are on tour with Ulrika Spacek so, I think we all wanna do some collabs with them! Kyle Hager: Same. Also more Lorelle Meets the Obsolete. Cate Le Bon is a dream too. What is one thing that nobody knows about you? Ryan Fuson: I’m an open book. Kyle Hager: I’m a fantasy football juggernaut. Have you ever been bullied? Ryan Fuson: Oh yeah middle school was a tough one for me. Kids are often mean to each other. Kyle Hager: Definitely. Until high school I was pretty convinced I was gonna be a loser forever. What is your advice to kids that are suffering from bullying? Ryan Fuson: It’s often tough to remember this while someone is bullying you, but people are often bullies because of some insecurity that they themselves are dealing with. I would try and encourage people to see bullies as people who are hurting and for one reason or another don’t know how to deal with their issues in better ways. Kyle Hager: I would say it’s important to understand your power as an individual. If you can be confident in yourself, there’s nothing anyone can do to hurt you. If you’re being physically assaulted, tell your parents or your teacher. Never be scared of being a snitch when it comes to being subjected to violence. If you could talk to your future self, what would you tell him? Ryan Fuson: I’d love to say that I would offer up the wisdom I’ve learned over the years but I wouldn’t listen. I’m a learn by experience kinda person. Maybe I would tell the young me to get into coding. Kyle Hager: Stay present.
In Tarot readings, the Five of Cups card signifies loss and grief. Depicting a cloaked figure with a bowed head looming over three spilled chalices while ignoring two remaining vessels, the Five of Cups is generally interpreted as representing a forlorn dwelling on the past and an inability to appreciate the positive things in the present. It was this card that struck a chord with vocalist/guitarist Ryan Fuson, member of the Austin, TX subversive subterranean pop outfit Holy Wave, during a Tarot reading at the height of the pandemic. “I was really sure that the music world was finished and it seemed like internet aggression and, well, aggression in general was at an all-time high, so I was ready to stop playing music,” Fuson says. “It could be so easy to become jaded and pessimistic and I had to really decide what perspective I was going to take. ”Rather than abandon music, Fuson and his compatriots chose to immerse themselves in their work. Fittingly, the Tarot card became the muse for Holy Wave’s sixth full-length album—Five of Cups. Back at the beginning of their fifteen-year career, Holy Wave leaned into a tranquil realm of psychedelia, eschewing long-form jams and guitar heroics for a dreamy pop-oriented approach. As the band evolved, the early Sgt. Peppers-meets-the-Velvets sound yielded to more sophisticated melodies and tripped-out instrumentation, effectively steering their music away from sun-bleached nostalgia to a color-saturated dimension where sounds of the past, present, and future intermingled. The childhood friends of Fuson, Joey Cook, Kyle Hager, and Julian Ruiz grew up in El Paso, where they cut their teeth in the local DIY scene. Hungry for more music and broader perspectives, the members made frequent road trips across the Southwest to catch touring bands who opted to skip West Texas markets. That wanderlust eventually prompted their relocation to Austin, but it also permeated in their adventurous songwriting and love for touring. No small surprise then that these aural explorers felt that a whole way of life was taken from them with the onset of the pandemic. But on Five of Cups, it sounds as if the physical limitations of quarantine life prompted Holy Wave to wander even deeper into new sonic territories. Five of Cups opens with the title track, establishing the album’s auditory and thematic modusoperandi from the get-go. Holy Wave’s lysergic textural palette is immediately apparent in thesong’s woozy synth lead and anti-gravity guitar jangle, but the atypical chord progressions and vocal melody steers the music away from anodyne escapism into a pensive grappling between self-determination and defeatism. Holy Wave continue to ride the wistful and phantasmic train on “Bog Song,” where the members vacillate between swells of austere minor chords and layered electric orchestration. From there, the previously released digital single “Chaparral”plays with the band’s own sense of nostalgia, weaving references of their El Paso past into a tapestry of transcendental triumph. Like so much classic album-oriented rock music, the real magic begins to unfold in the latter half of Five of Cups. On “The Darkest Timeline,” Holy Wave recruits their friends Lorena Quintanilla and Alberto Gonzalez from the Baja California, Mexico psych duo Lorelle Meets the Obsolete to add additional ethereal layers to their intoxicating after-midnight groove Action Magazine had the opportunity to look into Ali's world through our staple game of Q&A!
