July 2026
As I embark on the start of my year as the President of the Boulder Bar Association, my first thought is that I am overwhelmed with gratitude that I have the privilege of leading an organization of some of the brightest, most professional, and collegial groups of professionals. And that I get to do so in a community that is not only one of the most beautiful places in our country but is inhabited by a population of people who are highly educated, intellectually curious, open-minded and accepting, and generally very respectful of the rule of law and our legal system in general. This is not a responsibility I take lightly. I have given great thought about the needs of our legal community and what I would like our Bar to accomplish in the year ahead. One of our biggest challenges and opportunities involves our newest attorneys. Many of them are entering an uncertain economy and legal environment in which A.I. is becoming more prevalent and jobs for lawyers are limited in Boulder County. One of my goals is to help our Bar strengthen our connection with new lawyers. I envision that among the opportunities the Bar might include networking events, that will enable young attorneys to meet other new attorneys and more “seasoned” attorneys with a goal of enhancing their professional opportunities in Boulder County.I also envision the BCBA offering continuing education opportunities throughout the year, focused not only on substantive legal issues relevant to newer attorneys, but also events focused on marketing, professional development, mental health, and other practical tips that are valuable for all attorneys, and particularly newer attorneys. The board may also explore the interest in an informal mentorship program. Finally, I would like to highlight ways new attorneys can partake in events in which its members give back to the less fortunate via charitable events and pro bono and legal clinic opportunities.

Further, I would like to find ways to highlight the exceptional work our immigration attorneys do. We have more than a dozen immigration attorneys in Boulder County, who are practicing in a climate in which laws are shifting by the day, clients are deeply concerned about their rights, and there is a vast need for legal help. I envision furthering awareness of this group to not only support its members’ needs but also provide an outlet for legal assistance and other services for our community. One of our newest board members, Tiago Guevara, has practiced for years with a Longmont immigration law firm, which will help form an outlet between the Board and our greater community. In the past year, through our Board’s ex-officio paralegal representative, Carrie Armknecht, our Bar has welcomed as new members nearly 100 paralegals and other legal support staff. We look forward to expanding the opportunities available to these members, including increased networking and continuing education opportunities. Finally, a significant number of our attorneys practice in government jobs, including criminal litigation roles in the Boulder District Attorney’s Office and Public Defender’s Office. One of my goals in the upcoming year is to increase the benefits our Association provides to these attorneys and to encourage criminal law attorneys—both government and private sector—to become consistent members of our bar community. As such, we are thrilled that two of our newest board members practice in the criminal law field. Maile Minton, an Assistant District Attorney in the Boulder office, and Ugyen Tshering practices criminal defense and tenant eviction defense. In addition to the new benefits I hope we can offer to our members in the year ahead, I also look forward to continuing the great events and benefits that have been our hallmark for years, including the free virtual CLEs on a multitude of topics, our legal clinics, and our flagship events throughout the year including our Pro Bono Bash (which raises thousands of dollars each year for Colorado Legal Services), our Boulder Judges Dinner and our annual Bench-Bar event led by the 20th Judicial District judicial officers and other Colorado judges. Finally, I want to send our sincere thanks to our outgoing Boulder Bar President Jodi Martin, Treasurer Liz Parker, Past President Carolyn Steffl, and board member Debbie Taussig who have devoted many years of phenomenal work for the Board and the Bar at large! I look forward to a great year ahead as your President and invite our entire community to reach out to me at dstevens@celaw.com if you have any thoughts or ideas for the year ahead!

thanks to our clinic volunteers
Did you know the BCBA sponsors a Free Virtual Legal Clinic for Boulder County? This started during the pandemic and was so successful we have continued it to help further our commitment to access to justice. To date, we have helped over 1700 community members! We have a small group of incredibly dedicated volunteers who give 15-20 minutes of their time approximately once every few weeks. We would like to get that number to once a month, but we need more volunteers! Can you help with 20 minutes once a month in service to your community? Please let us know that you are available to help once per month (or more!) along with your practice areas. We could not provide this service without all of our amazing volunteer attorneys! Please contact Bay for more information about attorney.participating as a volunteer Please click here to sign up

A benefit of BCBA CLE offerings moving to webinars is that we are able to record the programs and make them available to view after the live presentation. We also submit the majority of our recordings for home study CLE credit, which allows our members to view them as needed to fulfill the credits needed for their reporting periods. Please see a list of our current home study offerings below, and if there is a program you're interested that you don't see here, the full list of our video recordings is available for BCBA Members only on our Webinars page. If there is a program that is not currently accredited for home study that you're interested, please contact Bay and we can work to get a recording re-accredited.
