It was my first summer at Mill Hollow as Assistant Director. It was everyone's first summer at Mill Hollow—2022. The leadership team had just wrapped up our evening meeting in high spirits and a few team members and I decided to end the night with a little treat from the dining hall. As we left the warmly lit office, we felt the bite of the wind tunnel created by the breezeway and descended the steps into darkness. No one had turned the exterior lights on tonight. Except for the parking lot. A singular post glowed eerily in the distance, illuminating only a small circle over the pavement. Nighttime in the backcountry is different. Everything gets swallowed by blackness and comforts are far save for the moon and stars. Tonight, however, the stars are covered by clouds, and a new moon leaves little light. Naturally, I felt a chill on the back of my neck and goosebumps started to rise as we made our way quickly into the dining hall. Ever since I was a counselor, I have always dreaded walking around camp at night. I know camp is incredibly safe and a friend is just a knock away, but I can’t help but see shadows for being bigger than they are or wonder if what I heard was really just branches rustling in the wind. We—the Camp Director, the Head Counselor, and I—finished our late-night snacks and started to prepare to face the night again. We turned off the lights and walked outside. That’s when it happened. Some of us heard something coming from the other direction. One of us saw movement. When the noise approached closer, we all screamed! The three of us took turns hiding behind one another, pushing us ever so closer towards the visitor. Reacting to our outburst, the creature revealed itself—a mule deer—then ran off into the night. We all laughed at ourselves and called it a night. From Mill Hollow, Happy Halloween everyone
OCTOBER 2025
Hello Camp families! It was such a pleasure to serve you all this summer! We had a blast with our campers living camp magic. We are "leaf-ing" summer behind and jumping into plans for 2026: setting program dates, picking theme weeks, and planning staff trainings! You may have seen a survey about your camp experience, that’s part of our partnership with Y-USA to help us learn, grow, and make every summer better for you and your campers. Huge thanks to everyone who has already shared feedback; your voice shapes what’s next! Yours in Camping, Ben Wittig

Dirt Happens. Showers Help. CAMP ROGER BATH HOUSE RENOVATIONS Hello Camp Families! I hope you’ve all done well in the time since we’ve seen you this summer, and that the start of the school year has been going smoothly! Things here at Camp Roger have certainly slowed down and it’s gotten much quieter up here. In some regards anyways... Shortly after we closed things down for the summer to get ready for camps’ rental season, we started the much-anticipated renovation of camp's bath houses (ohhh ahhh snaps)! While we’re just a little over a month into the construction process, I’m excited to share some updates. The bath houses as you know them are no more! Within just a week of construction starting, the bath houses had been almost entirely gutted. So far, we have passed all of the various inspections, and the contractors have already poured in new concrete and will begin framing the new layout of the buildings very, very soon! Then for those of you who are curious about the future of these two buildings, read on! The building that used to be the boys’ bath house will soon become a dedicated bathroom facility. It will be split into two separate sides, one for boys and one for girls, with 8 toilets on each side. This means we’ll be doubling the number of toilets available for boys’ cabins and increasing the number of toilets for girls’ cabins by 60%. As for the former girls’ bath house, it will be transformed into a shower facility. This building will also be divided into two completely separate sides, each reserved for one cabin group at a time. Each side will include 10 showers and 1 toilet, giving us a total of 20 showers! Best, Jake Green
