EMPOWERING YOUTH THROUGH SHARED DECISION-MAKING
In YMCA positive youth development, sharing power means intentionally providing opportunities for young people to influence decisions and direction. It’s about recognizing and valuing their voices and opinions in every aspect of their engagement. Failing to adopt this approach can lead to disengagement and a lack of ownership among youth. It may convey the message that their input isn’t valued, potentially stifling their confidence and initiative. Conversely, when adults actively involve youth in decision-making, even in small ways, it cultivates confidence and self-esteem. Youth begin to understand the significance of their contributions and gain the skills needed to take charge in various aspects of their lives. Practical Steps to Implement Shared Decision-Making With Youth: Create Opportunities: Look for chances to step back and let youth take the lead. Whether choosing activities or deciding on the agenda, provide space for their input. Seek Input: Actively solicit young people’s opinions and ideas. Encourage them to share their thoughts on improving existing processes or activities. Value Their Contributions: Ensure that youth understand the importance of their input. Acknowledge and appreciate their ideas, regardless of the outcome. Collaborate: Work together with youth to co-create experiences. Let them know that their participation and contributions are integral to the program’s success. By prioritizing shared decision-making, adults empower youth to take ownership of their experiences and development. It’s not just about giving them a seat at the table; it’s about recognizing the value they bring to the conversation and nurturing their confidence to lead.
